"So you made that phone call."
"Phone call? What phone call?" Luo Minggang feigned ignorance.
"Don't play dumb. I believe the person who reported it was you, right?"
"Are you so sure about that?"
Zhu Hui nodded confidently, "The instant noodles told me. You're the one who fed me instant noodles, aren't you, Masked Man?"
Luo Minggang couldn't help but laugh at her words and asked, "How did you figure out I was the one who fed you instant noodles, Masked Man?"
"Don't forget, you're the rival I've always wanted to defeat. Do you think someone who constantly wants to win over you wouldn't know every little detail about you?"
"Zhu Hui, honestly, sometimes you can be really annoying. In the past, I worked so hard just to keep you from surpassing me; I didn't realize how exhausting it was." Luo Minggang chuckled, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. "But now it's different. There's no one here to compete with, and I find myself living more comfortably."
"You may be comfortable, but I've lost my goal." Zhu Hui furrowed her brows and sighed dramatically.
Seeing her look of disappointment made Luo Minggang laugh out loud.
"Zhu Hui, I'm sorry. Can you accept my apology?" He lowered his gaze, a slightly awkward smile spreading across his face.
"Of course! Nothing can stop a sincere 'sorry'!" Zhu Hui replied cheerfully, shrugging her shoulders and spreading her arms in a gesture of acceptance.
"I hope I can still be a role model in your eyes and remain your competitor."
"You just said it; being your competitor is quite a painful thing!" Zhu Hui stuck out her tongue at him with a smile.
"Becoming your rival is painful, yet sweet," Luo Minggang sighed deeply, half-jokingly adding, "If none of this had happened, I might have confessed my feelings for you by now."
"You like me?" Zhu Hui exclaimed, pointing at herself in disbelief.
Luo Minggang smiled and nodded at her. "As I just said, I'm not a good person; I wouldn't be so nice to a girl for no reason."
Hearing this, Zhu Hui blurted out without thinking, "But I've never liked you!"
Luo Minggang felt embarrassed by her outright rejection, his face turning red as he replied, "That's what I dislike about you—you never beat around the bush; you're always so direct."
"Really?" Zhu Hui couldn't help but laugh at his frustrated expression. She playfully asked, "If I rejected you, would you still treat me the same way in the future?"
"I don't know; it depends on whether I still like you then."
"And what if you don't like me anymore by that time?"
"Then I guess I won't treat you well!"
"Can't you be a little less straightforward? Why do you have to be so blunt?" Zhu Hui pouted, pretending to be angry as she shot him a glance.
"I learned it from you," Luo Minggang said, and they both burst into laughter.
After the police rescued them, they took Yang Qianfan to the hospital and brought Zhu Hui back to the station for questioning. The case was solved quickly; within a week, all suspects involved were apprehended without exception. However, what shocked everyone at Nanhua High School—teachers and students alike—was that one of the suspects was none other than the student council president, Luo Minggang.
After lunch, due to his head injury, Yang Qianfan couldn't play basketball as joyfully as usual. Instead, he sat with a group of gossiping classmates, vividly recounting his kidnapping experience. Naturally, he embellished the story, and during the climax, he gestured dramatically with his hands and feet, passionately portraying himself as a living martyr. He pointed to the injury on his head, showcasing his heroic achievement, eager to pass down all his life’s accomplishments for others to learn and celebrate.
At that moment, Zhu Hui happened to walk by. Seeing her, Yang Qianfan's excitement surged even higher. He immediately stood up and called out to her, “Dwarf Winter Melon, you should know by now who the good guys are and who the hypocrites are!”
Zhu Hui turned to glance at him but said nothing. A sense of inexplicable melancholy quietly surfaced in her expression.
“Ah—” Yang Qianfan sighed contentedly at her, feeling deeply moved. “Justice has finally been served! Although he’s not of legal age and only got a year of compulsory education for Luo Minggang, it still feels like I’ve avenged myself.”
Zhu Hui's heart jolted at his words. She quickly turned back to Yang Qianfan and asked urgently, “What did you just say? Luo Minggang was sentenced to a year of compulsory education?”
“Yes! Why are you so anxious? Are you worried about him?” Yang Qianfan shot her a cold glare, feeling quite displeased.
Zhu Hui lowered her gaze and ignored him. Her heart trembled as she bowed her head, leaving quietly like a solitary field mouse on a journey.
A week later, at Wuhan Juvenile Correctional Facility.
Zhu Hui sat in the cold visiting room, waiting for Luo Minggang's arrival. Soon after, staff members brought him in one after another. Upon seeing Luo Minggang, Zhu Hui instinctively stood up from her seat.
“Zhu Hui, thank you for coming to see me today,” Luo Minggang said calmly as he addressed her first.
“Luo Minggang, are you doing okay here?” Zhu Hui looked at him with concern.
Luo Minggang nodded slightly. “I’m fine; feeling at peace is better than anything else.”
Zhu Hui took a deep breath and smiled faintly at him, saying nothing, as if a thousand words were conveyed in silence.
"To be honest, I really didn't expect you to come see me," Luo Minggang said, lowering his gaze. A meaningful smile tugged at the corners of his mouth as he anxiously asked, "With how I've treated you, don't you hate me?"
"I don't hate you," Zhu Hui shook her head.
"Really? But I almost got you sold to Nanyang."
"But I believe you wouldn't just stand by and watch me suffer," Zhu Hui said, looking at him with determination.
Luo Minggang met her gaze, feeling conflicted. After a moment of hesitation, he sighed, "Actually, I'm not as good as you think. Really! You have no idea how wicked my heart is. I even took risks to sell drugs at D Bar for money. Later, when Yang Qianfan discovered my secret, I stooped so low as to kidnap him. I even thought about killing him to silence him after getting the money, but at that crucial moment, I abandoned that thought."
"Why?"
"Because of you. Because I didn't want to hurt you, truly!" Luo Minggang smiled lightly and confessed, "That kid was lucky to have you; he got his life back because of you."
