“This… this Dwarf Winter Melon is just too much! Just because she got first place in the whole grade, she’s acting so vain,” Yang Qianfan said, staring in disbelief at Zhu Hui’s antics, shivering from the cold, goosebumps rapidly spreading across her body.
“Yeah! This morning she told me she didn’t even care about getting first place, but now… she… she’s actually… it’s terrifying!” Wang Yuhan exclaimed, rubbing her arms as if to ward off the chill that seemed to seep into her bones.
After lunch, Wang Yuhan and Yang Qianfan played basketball for a while on the court. Feeling tired, they decided to head to the back playground of the school for some peace and quiet. They sat at the top of the Cloud Ladder, chatting leisurely.
“When did you start working at KFC?” Yang Qianfan asked.
“How did you know I was working at KFC?” Wang Yuhan replied, puzzled.
“I happened to run into that Dwarf Winter Melon when I went to KFC. She told me about it, and she was so excited, her eyes practically sparkling.”
“Oh—really?” Wang Yuhan laughed uncontrollably, nearly falling off the Cloud Ladder.
“What’s so funny? What’s there to laugh about?”
“I’m laughing at Zhu Hui; she really acts like a lovesick fool. Honestly, she’s kind of cute,” he said, his laughter fading as he turned thoughtful and asked Yang Qianfan, “Do you think she might be interested in me?”
“And if she is interested in you? What then?” Yang Qianfan shot him a glance, her tone icy.
“If she really is interested, I wouldn’t let the opportunity slip by. I’d definitely pursue her!”
“I’m telling you, you don’t have that chance anymore,” Yang Qianfan asserted vehemently.
“Why?”
“Because… because… because she already has someone she likes. Her heart belongs to that idiot she grew up with, what’s his name, Tang Hui.”
“How do you know that?” Wang Yuhan asked, frowning in confusion.
“She told me herself. She plans to marry that guy in the future!” Yang Qianfan said indignantly.
Wang Yuhan looked at him and smiled without saying a word, lazily leaning on the railing, gazing down at the mottled shadows of the trees below. They swayed rhythmically in the gentle breeze. At that moment, Zhu Hui unexpectedly appeared in the back playground, but she didn’t notice Yang Qianfan and Wang Yuhan sitting on the Cloud Ladder; she thought there was no one around. So, she turned around and, like a thief, glanced around for a moment. After confirming that there was indeed no one nearby, she quietly ran to the door of an abandoned boiler room and stood there in a daze, as if contemplating her actions against the wall, looking quite neurotic and puzzling to anyone who saw her.
“What’s this Dwarf Winter Melon doing here? Could it be that she wants to secretly meet her lover in this abandoned boiler room?” Yang Qianfan said as he tugged at Wang Yuhan’s sleeve, perplexed.
“Who knows? Maybe she’s hiding some treasure in that boiler room!”
“No way! Her family is poor; what treasure could she possibly have? The most valuable thing in her family is probably her grandmother, who has lived for seventy or eighty years and still isn’t dead—she’s practically an antique.”
Just as Yang Qianfan finished speaking, Zhu Hui suddenly moved. She turned around, looked around with a strange expression, and after confirming that there was indeed no one nearby, she cleared her throat and excitedly shouted into the dark boiler room.
“I… I… finally… I finally defeated Luo Minggang and got first place in the whole… whole grade! First place!” Zhu Hui exclaimed ecstatically, dancing with joy and tears of excitement welling up in her eyes. After shouting, she placed her hands on her hips and burst into loud laughter, startling anyone who might have been watching.
