More than two months had passed, and the sky in May was as blue as the sea, with white clouds drifting lightly like goose down. Nanhua High School had just completed its midterm exams, but unfortunately, the entire Sophomore Year had performed poorly. Only Zhu Hui had done exceptionally well, achieving victory for the first time over her long-time rival, Luo Minggang, and earning the honor of being the top student in her grade.
After class, the corridor on the floor where the Sophomore Year was located felt unusually oppressive, lacking the usual laughter and chatter. Everyone sat dejectedly in their classrooms, like sickly chickens unable to eat, waiting for the school leaders to deliver their rounds of scolding.
Wang Yuhan had just returned from the administration office and was passing by the door of Class 4 when he happened to run into Zhu Hui as she stepped out of the classroom.
"Zhu Hui, congratulations! You finally defeated your old rival Luo Minggang in this midterm exam and secured first place in the entire grade."
"Please—it's just one first place. What's there to be so surprised about? I didn't even think much of it," Zhu Hui replied dismissively.
"Oh really? I thought you'd be thrilled!"
"I am happy, but not as exaggerated as you think."
Wang Yuhan smiled at her, but a shadow crossed his face as he sighed dejectedly. "I wonder when I'll be able to defeat you as a rival and enjoy being first in the grade myself."
Hearing this made Zhu Hui laugh, covering her mouth with her hand. She patted his shoulder and said with a hint of insincerity, "As long as you’re willing to work hard, it will happen someday. You did quite well this time too—third in the grade, just behind Jiang Xi!" Then she suddenly remembered something and frowned with regret. "But Luo Minggang... I don't know what's going on with him lately. His grades have plummeted; he actually dropped to tenth place in this exam."
"I feel the same way. Since entering high school, Luo Minggang has never ranked lower than second place in countless exams. It's astonishing that he fell so far this time to tenth place. I wasn't surprised that he lost to you, but he also lost to me—that's truly unbelievable," Wang Yuhan said, scratching his chin in confusion.
Zhu Hui nodded in agreement, deep in thought as she acknowledged his perspective.
