Last night, it rained all night, but this morning the sky was unexpectedly clear, blue like a silent ocean, and the white clouds floated like free waves. A flock of wild geese flew in and landed on a gaunt, withered tree, sighed, and then flew away.
This morning, Zhu Huijin had a dispute with a classmate over a trivial matter, which led to a group attack from other classmates. After school, feeling down and having skipped lunch, she ran alone to "Red Square" in search of peace. She sat beneath a Ginkgo Tree, gloomily staring at a book. A gentle breeze blew by, and golden ginkgo leaves floated down from the tree, landing on her head, shoulders, and the book she was reading. She closed the book in her hands and looked up at the swirling ginkgo leaves, feeling a twinge of melancholy and coolness in her heart. With a sigh of resignation, she picked up a handful of dry ginkgo leaves from the ground and suddenly recalled a poem: "You once grew high in the treetops, now you willingly become fertilizer for the grass. If everyone were as selfless as you, next spring would surely be beautiful." As she thought about it, she couldn't help but smile slightly, realizing that instead of lamenting the resilience of grass, she was admiring the greatness of fallen leaves returning to their roots. No matter what, this reflection was enough to lift her spirits.
At that moment, Tang Hui rode his bicycle towards her, swaying left and right. From afar, he called out loudly, "Hui, what are you doing sitting here in a daze? If you don’t get to school soon, you’ll be late."
"Late?" Zhu Hui jolted back to reality at his reminder and shouted back, "What time is it now?"
"1:50 PM. You have ten minutes before you're late."
"Ah! I didn't realize I had been sitting here for so long." Zhu Hui exclaimed in shock as she jumped up from the ground and rushed to block Tang Hui's bike. "Let me ride on the back of your bike; give me a lift!" With that, she nimbly hopped onto his old bicycle.
"No way! The rear tire is punctured; it’s dangerous for you to sit back there," Tang Hui explained as he jumped off the bike.
"It’s fine! I only weigh 80 pounds; I’m very light," Zhu Hui insisted nonchalantly, refusing to get off.
Tang Hui couldn't argue with her. Reluctantly, he allowed her to ride along as they bumped their way to school. Just as they entered the school gate and hadn't gone far when they encountered a downhill slope. Due to last night's rain, the road was muddy and difficult to navigate. However, pressed for time and with Zhu Hui urging him on from behind, Tang Hui pushed down the slope. The already faulty bike lost control on the slippery surface and surged forward like a wild horse that had broken free. Tang Hui instinctively closed his eyes and screamed in terror as he felt the bike careening out of control. Hearing his terrified scream from behind made Zhu Hui scream as well.
At that moment, Yang Qianfan had just finished playing basketball and was passing by when he heard someone scream. Before he could react, a bicycle came barreling towards him. Instinctively, he sidestepped to avoid it. As the bike whizzed past him, a strong shockwave hit him head-on, knocking him back several steps. He didn’t even know what he was holding in his arms before he fell to the ground and rolled several times. Lying there with what felt like a heavy stone pressing on his chest made it hard for him to breathe. When he opened his eyes in pain, he found himself holding someone—not just anyone but his arch-nemesis Zhu Hui.
"You damn Dwarf Winter Melon! Why do I always end up so unlucky whenever I run into you?" Yang Qianfan lamented on the ground upon realizing it was her, pounding his chest in despair.
