Zhu Hui looked at the group of vicious people around her, feeling overwhelmed. At that moment, she really wanted to cry, to leave this place and escape far away, never to see anyone again. Just as she was on the brink of despair and felt utterly alone, Wang Yuhan suddenly stepped forward and said to her, “Zhu Hui, I’m not in a good mood right now. Would you like to accompany me for a walk?”
When Zhu Hui looked up and saw Wang Yuhan stepping up to help her in this critical moment, she felt a wave of gratitude wash over her, as if she had found a kindred spirit in her time of need. She fought back her tears and trembled as she nodded at him, saying, “Of course… of course…” With that, they prepared to leave this den of wolves together.
As they reached the door and opened it, they unexpectedly bumped into Xiao Yang and Li Lingfei, who were just about to knock.
“Zhu Hui, what are you doing here?” Li Lingfei exclaimed in surprise upon seeing Zhu Hui.
“Li Lingfei, what are you doing here?” Zhu Hui asked back, equally confused as she stared wide-eyed at Li Lingfei.
“It’s my boyfriend’s birthday today. I just went out to buy something and didn’t expect to run into you here! What a coincidence!” Li Lingfei said joyfully.
“Your boyfriend’s birthday?” Zhu Hui was even more puzzled.
“Of course! If it’s not her boyfriend’s birthday, then whose could it be?” Xiao Yang stepped closer with a sly smile. “You probably don’t know that Li Lingfei’s boyfriend is Yang Qianfan.” She then stood on her tiptoes and called out sweetly to Yang Qianfan, who was standing at the back of the crowd, “Fan Ge, Li Lingfei is your girlfriend, right?”
At that moment, all eyes turned toward Yang Qianfan, including Zhu Hui’s.
“Yes… yes… it is! Why did you take so long to come back?” Yang Qianfan stammered with an awkward smile.
It was only then that Zhu Hui realized the truth: Li Lingfei was indeed Yang Qianfan’s genuine girlfriend, while she herself was nothing. She clenched her fists behind her back and gritted her teeth but managed to force a smile. “So you two are a couple! You really match well together; you could be described as… a pair of ‘wolves and leopards’!” Zhu Hui praised with a smile, pretending to be indifferent. The phrase ‘wolves and leopards’ was deliberately vague so that others might think she was referring to them as a handsome couple.
Seeing Zhu Hui about to leave, Li Lingfei asked in confusion, “Since you’re here, why don’t you stay and have some fun?”
“Let’s… play another time!” Zhu Hui said, lowering her head and eager to leave.
“Do you have something urgent? Why must you leave right now?” Li Lingfei pulled her back, disappointment etched on her face.
“ Lingfei, I think it’s better if you stay and play with them! We have things to attend to, so we’ll leave first,” Wang Yuhan stepped forward to rescue Zhu Hui, addressing Li Lingfei.
“What? You’re leaving too?” Li Lingfei exclaimed, her excitement turning to agitation upon seeing Wang Yuhan’s intent to depart.
“Yes! The atmosphere here is too disgusting; I want to get some fresh air,” Wang Yuhan replied dismissively with a cold laugh. “Let’s find another opportunity to hang out!” With that, she grabbed Zhu Hui and brushed past Li Lingfei.
“Wait—”
Just as they stepped out the door, a fierce voice called out from behind them. Zhu Hui and Wang Yuhan instinctively turned around to see Liao Chengwei, his face flushed and bloodshot eyes betraying signs of heavy drinking, looking like a drunken beast.
“What do you want?” Zhu Hui asked nervously, feeling a chill run down her spine at his menacing demeanor.
Before she could finish her sentence, Liao Chengwei lunged at her like a ferocious wolf. In an instant, he slapped Zhu Hui hard across the face and kicked her violently, sending her crashing to the ground, unable to rise. When she finally regained her senses, blood was already trickling from the corner of her mouth.
Wang Yuhan was furious at Liao Chengwei’s audacity to strike someone. She charged forward and began pummeling him. The onlookers who had been enjoying the spectacle moments before were now shocked into silence, rushing forward to intervene. Chaos erupted as everyone tried to separate the fighters, creating a scene that was utterly disordered.
Li Lingfei was terrified by the unfolding violence; she covered her mouth in shock. Without thinking twice, she rushed over to help Zhu Hui up from the ground, anxiously asking if she was okay. But Zhu Hui didn’t respond; she kept her head down, sobbing uncontrollably as tears streamed down her face like a waterfall.
At that moment, Yang Qianfan could no longer sit idly by. He couldn’t tolerate Liao Chengwei’s brazen attack in his own home, especially against Zhu Hui. Enraged beyond reason, he stormed up to Liao Chengwei and grabbed his hair, unleashing a flurry of punches and kicks. Yang Qianfan was just as fierce as Wang Yuhan but even more relentless; it seemed he wouldn’t stop until Liao Chengwei was incapacitated. Seeing her boyfriend join the fray left Li Lingfei desperate; she had no choice but to abandon Zhu Hui and rush over to intervene. Meanwhile, all eyes were on the chaotic brawl between Wang Yuhan, Yang Qianfan, and Liao Chengwei, completely unaware that Zhu Hui had already slipped away in sorrow.
