It was Yang Qianfan's birthday, and the weather was not great; the sky was overcast, as if a storm were about to break. Yang Qianfan woke up particularly early because he had arranged to meet Zhu Hui at the school gate the next morning, and then take her to his temporary apartment for his birthday party.
Zhu Hui had been excited all night and arrived early in the morning. After standing at the school gate for over an hour in the chilly wind, Yang Qianfan finally showed up. Seeing him, Zhu Hui couldn't contain her excitement and rushed over to shower him with a flurry of birthday wishes.
Yang Qianfan looked at her innocent smile and couldn't help but shiver, feeling as tense as a tightly strung violin string. He instinctively touched his face, relieved that his nose and eyes were still intact, not revealing any ugly truths. However, he felt as if his tongue had forked like a snake hiding in a filthy drain, and when he spoke, his words tumbled out incoherently, unable to escape the fate of exposure.
To mask his inner unease, he remained silent during their walk while Zhu Hui chattered away happily. He kept his head down, feeling as if a thousand troops were clashing in his mind. He debated whether to tell her about the bet he made with Hu Yuanji; perhaps she would forgive him if he did. Torn between indecision and anxiety, he led Zhu Hui back to his place.
Standing outside the door, he fumbled in his pocket for quite some time before finally retrieving a key. He inserted it into the lock but struggled to turn it; perhaps he didn't really want to open the door at all. Zhu Hui noticed his clumsiness and playfully scolded him for being so slow and unable to open his own door. With a cute scrunch of her nose, she snatched the key from him and heroically took on the task of unlocking it herself. The door finally swung open to reveal a newly decorated living room adorned with balloons and colorful streamers. A table was laid out with various snacks and flowers, while a large cake stood like a beautiful piece of art, ready for celebration. The karaoke machine was set up, waiting for someone to sing.
Zhu Hui's eyes widened in amazement at everything before her. She thought to herself how wonderful it was that birthdays could be celebrated like this. As she stepped into the empty living room and noticed no one else was there, she turned back to Yang Qianfan with confusion. "It's your birthday today; why is there no one else here?"
"Aren't you and I people?" Yang Qianfan replied curtly, feeling increasingly flustered inside.
"Is it just me who came to your birthday party?" Zhu Hui asked shyly, her cheeks turning red.
"Yes," Yang Qianfan said with a casual smile that masked his unease. "I only invited you because I wanted to spend a happy and romantic birthday party just with you."
"Really... is that so?" Zhu Hui felt her ears heat up as she became both shy and excited. She took out a watch she had bought for him from her bag and bashfully said, "This is your birthday gift from me; I hope you like it." She held out the gift towards him.
Yang Qianfan accepted the gift and glanced at it briefly before thanking her blandly and tossing it onto the table as if it were trash, not bothering with it further.
Seeing her gift treated so coldly left Zhu Hui feeling disappointed. Just as she was about to ask him if the watch wasn't to his liking, a sudden noise from the adjacent room caught her attention. She shot Yang Qianfan a look and pointed toward the source of the sound. "It sounds like someone is in there; could it be a thief?" With newfound courage, she volunteered to go catch the intruder.
