“Enough, I don’t want to hear it anymore.” Zhu Hui interrupted him, not wanting to hear any more bad words about Yang Qianfan. She covered her ears and shouted at him.
“Hui, do you… do you like him?” Tang Hui asked softly, feeling a heaviness in his heart as if it were filled with lead.
“You… what nonsense are you talking about! How could I possibly like him?” Zhu Hui retorted fiercely, but her words seemed to contradict her eyes. Her teeth clenched tightly, refusing to make a sound.
“If you don’t like him, then why can’t you look me in the eye? You clearly like him, don’t you?” Tang Hui exclaimed, his heart racing with anxiety as he couldn’t help but raise his voice at her.
“What are you doing?” Zhu Hui angrily pushed him away and huffed, “Yes, yes, yes! I like him! Are you satisfied now?” She wrinkled her nose at him in disgust and turned to leave in a huff.
“Wait, Hui.” Seeing her about to walk away, Tang Hui rushed in front of her, arms outstretched to block her path. “Yang Qianfan is really not a good person. He must have some ulterior motive for getting close to you. He’s only being nice to you now to deceive you. You mustn’t believe him!”
“He has ulterior motives for me?” Zhu Hui couldn’t help but scoff at his words, finding him incredibly childish. “I have no grievances with him; we’ve never had any conflicts. I’m not some stunning beauty; why would he want to get close to me for anything sinister?”
“Hui, you have to believe me. I’m not lying; he really…”
“Alright, that’s enough! You’re really annoying!” At this point, Zhu Hui could no longer tolerate him. She stood on her tiptoes and shouted at him furiously, “Let me tell you, I don’t want to hear any more bad things about Yang Qianfan from you. If you keep this up, don’t expect us to be friends anymore! Also, my mood has been ruined by you today, so when you go home, tell your mom that I won’t be coming over for dinner. Goodbye!” With that, she left without looking back.
Tang Hui watched her infatuation blind her to reason; she wouldn’t listen to his advice at all. He was nearly boiling with anger. Spotting a concrete utility pole nearby that irritated him greatly, he couldn’t help but kick it a few times in frustration, releasing the pent-up rage inside him. A painful cry escaped his lips as he felt the impact.
Back home, Zhu Hui lay on her bed, tossing and turning all night long. She pondered what she should give Yang Qianfan for his birthday. “A pair of leather shoes? Too expensive. An ashtray? No way; smoking is harmful to health. He likes basketball; should I get him a basketball? But that might seem too cheap.” After much deliberation, she finally decided on a watch—something that wouldn’t come off as too shabby yet wouldn’t break the bank either.
After school, she excitedly gathered all her savings and rushed to Wuhan Mall to choose a watch. The various styles of watches at the counter dazzled her, each one more beautiful than the last, and she found herself in a dilemma, unsure of which one to buy. At that moment, the counter staff noticed her hesitation and warmly asked, "Are you buying a watch for someone special?"
"A friend," Zhu Hui replied cheerfully.
"Is it for your boyfriend?" the counter staff asked with a smile.
Upon hearing this, Zhu Hui felt a flush of warmth spreading from her neck to her ears. She thought to herself that he should be considered her future boyfriend! With a shy smile towards the counter staff, she nodded in affirmation.
Seeing that she was a young girl, the counter staff assumed she wouldn't have too much money, so she recommended mid-range watches. From another display case, she took out a beautifully crafted box. When opened, it revealed a pair of watches that looked as affectionate as a couple in love. Zhu Hui immediately fell in love with these couple watches and was ready to purchase them right away. However, when she saw the price tag for the pair, she was taken aback; together they cost over 300 yuan. While this might not seem expensive to most people, for a high school student like her, it was quite a sum. Despite her hesitation, she ultimately decided to buy them because just the idea of them being "couple watches" was enough to make her commit to this decision.
