That morning, Detective Ma Mingxia was in the office, fully engrossed in reviewing the testimony of a blind witness from last week's arson-murder case.
After a long period of concentration, he felt a bit fatigued. He stretched widely, picked up the water cup on his desk, took a sip, and then glanced at the large clock hanging on the wall. The hands pointed to 10:50, and lunchtime was approaching.
At that moment, Detective Wang Sicong walked over briskly, a look of urgency on his face. He said to Ma Mingxia, "Mingxia, do you know where Baoyin Building is?"
"Yes," Ma Mingxia replied, setting down his cup and looking at him with curiosity. "What's up?"
"I just got a call from a friend. She said her husband is going to kill her and asked me to come help her. I'm worried about her and want to check on her," Wang Sicong said, steadying himself and instinctively licking his lips. "She said she’s at Baoyin Building, but I only know its general location."
"I'll go with you," Ma Mingxia volunteered without hesitation.
"Great! Let's go!" Wang Sicong responded eagerly, showing no signs of reluctance.
Wang Sicong was 27 years old, two years older than Ma Mingxia. They were not only colleagues but also good friends.
The two had collaborated on numerous difficult cases at work and often met up for basketball after hours, maintaining a strong bond.
Since Ma Mingxia's driving skills were average, Wang Sicong took the wheel while Ma Mingxia sat in the passenger seat, responsible for navigating.
On their way to Baoyin Building, Wang Sicong detailed the situation to Ma Mingxia: "You know I'm currently attending night school three nights a week. There's a woman in my class named Qian Qiushui; she's around thirty years old, cheerful and enthusiastic, and gets along well with everyone."
She had just called me, saying that her husband was going to kill her and asked me to save her. She mentioned that she was at Room 2408 in Building Five of the Baoyin Building. Although I wasn't particularly close with Qian Qiushui, as a detective, I had no reason to ignore such a call."
"You’re right," Ma Mingxia nodded vigorously, fully agreeing with Wang Sicong's words. "If it were me, I would definitely check it out in person."
Half an hour later, Wang Sicong and Ma Mingxia arrived at the Baoyin Building.
The two quickly got out of the car and hurried to the location of Building Five. They took the elevator to the twenty-fourth floor and soon reached the door of Room 2408. However, the door was locked from the inside.
Without any hesitation, Wang Sicong decisively drew his gun and aimed it at the iron lock on the door, firing three shots in quick succession. The sound echoed loudly in the silent hallway. Then, he kicked the door with all his might, forcing it open.
As they stepped inside, a shocking scene unfolded before them: a woman lay sprawled in the center of the living room, her head brutally severed and placed beside her body. The floor around the corpse was soaked in blood, resembling a dark red carpet.
The air was thick with the smell of blood. Not far from the female corpse sat a man on the floor. He appeared to be in his mid-thirties, with a narrow forehead and a pointed chin—unremarkable in appearance. At that moment, his face was as pale as paper, his body trembling uncontrollably, and his expression was filled with deep panic and fear.
Wang Sicong reacted quickly, snapping back to reality. He immediately aimed his gun at the suspicious man and shouted loudly, "Don't move! We are police! Raise your hands! Get down!"
The man let out a strange cry, his voice trembling as he stammered, "Don't shoot! I don't know anything!"
As he spoke, he slowly raised his hands and crouched down cautiously.
Wang Sicong kept a close eye on him, his gaze filled with vigilance and determination. He turned to Ma Mingxia and said, "Mingxia, check the situation inside the house."
Ma Mingxia nodded and replied with concern, "Be careful!"
After a moment of contemplation, he walked to the front door and closed it securely to prevent anyone from intruding and tampering with the scene. Then, he stepped into the inner hall to carefully examine the situation inside the house.
Before long, Ma Mingxia had a clear understanding of the current state of the house:
There was no one else inside, and all the windows were fitted with security bars, tightly arranged. The only way in or out of the house was through the front door.
This is a completely sealed room, Ma Mingxia thought. Could it be that the man in the hall is the one who killed that woman? But why didn’t he escape?
