"Run!" Xu Yuan shouted as he grabbed Liu Ying's hand. "Their reinforcements are almost here!"
Under the cover of night, the two raced through the streets of the capital. The footsteps of their pursuers grew closer, accompanied by Madam Xu's sharp voice, "Catch them! We must not let them reach the Tianshi Market Camp Howl!"
"This way!" Liu Ying pulled Xu Yuan into a narrow alley. She was intimately familiar with every small street in the city, a skill her grandfather had made sure she remembered.
Suddenly, a whistling sound pierced the air as several arrows shot toward their backs! Xu Yuan opened his folding fan and deflected all the arrows.
"They're trying to corner us into a dead end," Xu Yuan said solemnly.
Liu Ying nodded. "So we need to go there." She pointed ahead to a tall wall. "If we climb over, we'll reach the ruins of Anyuan Marquis Manor."
They exchanged a knowing glance. Xu Yuan knelt down, crossing his hands, and Liu Ying used his shoulders to leap gracefully onto the wall. She quickly unfastened her belt, tying one end to a protruding brick and letting the other end hang down.
Just as Xu Yuan was about to climb up, the alley's entrance was blocked by members of the Xu family. Madam Xu's cold voice rang out, "Why aren't you running anymore?"
"Madam," Xu Yuan turned around, his expression calm, "why must you pursue us to the bitter end?"
"Why?" Madam Xu sneered. "The root of the disaster that couldn't be eradicated twenty years ago must be completely uprooted today!"
Before she finished speaking, more arrows shot out from the shadows. With no way to dodge, it seemed they would be hit, but Liu Ying had already leaped down from the wall. The Bronze Mirror arced through the moonlight, knocking down all the arrows!
"Go!" Liu Ying urged as she pulled Xu Yuan over the wall.
Madam Xu shouted fiercely, "After them! Don’t let them—" Her voice was abruptly cut off with a loud crash as the Bronze Mirror fell heavily to the ground.
"The mirror!" Liu Ying felt a pang in her heart. It was her grandfather's only keepsake.
"Forget about it," Xu Yuan said firmly, gripping her hand tightly. "I'm here with you."
They navigated through the ruins. Anyuan Marquis Manor had long been abandoned, overgrown with weeds and vines climbing over broken walls. Under the moonlight, everything appeared desolate.
"Wait." Liu Ying suddenly stopped. "Look here."
Moonlight filtered through the crumbling walls, casting mottled shadows on the ground. The arrangement of those shadows bore an uncanny resemblance to Tian Shiyuan's star patterns!
"This isn't a coincidence," Xu Yuan said. "Your grandfather must have chosen this place for a reason."
Before he could finish speaking, another whistling sound echoed through the air. This time, arrows were wrapped in oil-soaked cloth! In an instant, the surrounding weeds ignited into a great fire.
"Are they trying to burn us alive?" Xu Yuan scoffed. "Using tactics from twenty years ago again?"
Madam Xu's voice sounded particularly sinister amidst the flames: "Since you insist on investigating, then let you and these ruins be buried in flames together!"
The fire grew larger, thick smoke making it hard to see. Liu Ying suddenly spotted an entrance to a cellar. "Xu Yuan, over here!"
As the two jumped into the cellar, the beams above came crashing down with a thunderous roar. Amidst the dust and smoke, Liu Ying held Xu Yuan tightly, saying, "This time, I will never let go."
"You silly girl," Xu Yuan gently stroked her hair. "Neither will I."
Just then, a strange noise echoed from the walls of the cellar. By the flickering firelight, they could vaguely see a hidden compartment!
"You can't escape!" Madam Xu's voice boomed from above. "Tonight, you will accompany the the Yu Family to their graves!"
Suddenly, Liu Ying remembered something. "Xu Yuan, do you remember the words in the mirror? 'The true sight is seen where the moonlight descends in the west…'"
"Yes!" Xu Yuan exclaimed, realization dawning on him. "The moonlight descending in the west refers to this direction!"
Together, they pushed open the hidden compartment, revealing a secret passage. But at that moment, the bricks above began to shake violently. The Xu family was using explosives to collapse the cellar!
"We don't have time…" Liu Ying looked up at the crumbling ceiling.
Xu Yuan pushed her into the passage. "You go first!"
"No!" Liu Ying clung tightly to his hand. "If we leave, we leave together!"
With a deafening crash, a corner of the cellar's ceiling collapsed. Xu Yuan had no time to think; he scooped up Liu Ying and leaped into the passage. Behind them, countless bricks fell with a thunderous roar!
In the darkness, they held each other tightly. Suddenly, a flicker of torchlight appeared at the end of the passage. In this life-and-death moment, everything was understood without words.
