"Miss, are you really going?" A Fu looked worriedly at Liu Ying as she packed her belongings.
"I have to go," Liu Ying replied in a low voice. "The writing on that arrow is clearly Su Jinzhi's hand. Since he took the risk to send a message, there must be something important to discuss."
As the moon hung high in the sky, a figure quietly slipped into the back courtyard of the Qingfeng Teahouse. Su Jinzhi was waiting in the pavilion and quickly rose upon seeing Liu Ying. "You really came."
"Jinzhi, what on earth is going on?"
"The Xu family entered the palace today," Su Jinzhi said gravely. "They reported to the Empress Dowager that you have been secretly reading confidential texts, intending to pry into Tian Ji."
Liu Ying's heart sank. "So tonight at the library..."
"Exactly, it was a trap set by the Xu family," Su Jinzhi nodded. "They want to use this to prove to the Empress Dowager that you already know secrets you shouldn't."
"But that notebook..."
"Don't mention that." Su Jinzhi suddenly interrupted her. "Some things are better left unknown." He took out a piece of parchment. "Look at this."
In the candlelight, a layout of a residence was drawn on the parchment. Su Jinzhi pointed to one area. "There’s a secret passage here that leads straight outside the city. If things get dangerous, you should escape through here."
"Jinzhi, you..."
"I know what you're investigating." Su Jinzhi smiled bitterly. "The truth about Twenty Years Ago isn't easy to uncover. Master Xu is currently in the palace, and the Xu family will not miss this opportunity."
Liu Ying's heart tightened. "Xu Yuan... he..."
"Don't worry, I've arranged for someone to protect him in secret." Su Jinzhi took out a silk pouch. "This is an antidote pill; keep it with you. The Xu family never plays fair."
"Jinzhi, all these years..." Liu Ying's voice choked.
"Silly girl," Su Jinzhi sighed softly. "I knew this day would come from the moment you first met him." He pointed to a marked spot on the parchment. "Remember, if anything changes, go to Tianshi Market Camp Howl. The secrets of the the Yu Family might be hidden there."
"The the Yu Family..." Liu Ying murmured to herself. Every time she heard that name, an inexplicable thrill coursed through her.
"Oh, and," Su Jinzhi added, "Luo Yunzhi asked me to tell you that the the Zhang Family has agreed to help. They have set up a residence in Nanjiao and can provide support at any time."
Just then, the sound of a clock chiming echoed from outside. Su Jinzhi's expression tightened. "You need to leave now. Remember, be cautious over these next three days; the Xu family will definitely take action."
Liu Ying stood up but turned back again. "Jinzhi, why are you helping us?"
Under the moonlight, Su Jinzhi revealed a gentle smile. "Because I owe a promise to the the Yu Family."
On her way home, Liu Ying's thoughts were racing. She took out the broken jade pendant and recalled Su Jinzhi's words: the Yu Family, Tianshi Market Camp Howl, and the Great Fire from Twenty Years Ago—what could all of this possibly connect?
"Miss," A Fu suddenly whispered, "someone is following us."
A chill ran through Liu Ying's heart as she was about to turn around when an arrow whistled through the air, embedding itself in the wall ahead. Attached to the arrow was a note that read:
"On the day after tomorrow, at the Hour of the Rat, outside Tianshi Market Camp Howl, I will wait for you."
The handwriting was unmistakably Xu Yuan's!
"Miss, be careful!" A Fu exclaimed. Another arrow shot forth, this time it was from the Xu family’s Dark Arrow!
In a critical moment, a figure darted out and sliced through the Dark Arrow with a palm strike. Bathed in moonlight, Liu Ying recognized him as the Guardian of the the Zhang Family.
"Young Master Zhang sent me to protect you," the Guardian whispered. "Please return to your residence quickly; everything has been prepared."
Liu Ying tightened her grip on the jade pendant in her hand. Yes, everything must be ready. The day after tomorrow at the Hour of the Rat might just be when the truth is unveiled.
For now, all she could do was wait. Wait for the moment that would unravel all the mysteries.
