Just as one wave of trouble had yet to settle, another arose. While we were in a state of distress, we received another report.
The location of the incident was very close to the scene of the first case, on Furongjiang Road in Changning District, near Renheng Riverside Garden. The body was discovered at the corner of a secluded alley.
The victim, Liu (female, Han ethnicity, 26 years old), was estimated to have died between 2 and 3 AM. The cause of death was identical to that of the previous case; after her death, the perpetrator had sexually assaulted her. Most importantly, we found an item at the scene—a Cross Necklace adorned with sapphires.
This style of cross was the same as the one left at the first crime scene, except that the gemstone in this cross was blue, while the necklace from the first case featured a purple gemstone.
Therefore, we believed that these two cases were committed by the same perpetrator, indicating a serial rape and murder case.
However, another week passed without any leads. Just then, a street cleaner discovered a third female corpse near Gubei Road and Shenling Building early one morning.
The victim, Zhang (female, Han ethnicity, 21 years old), had a cause of death and scene conditions that were eerily similar to those of the previous two cases. Most importantly, we found the killer's signature—another Cross Necklace—this time with a sapphire.
I knew this was a mockery and a taunt directed at the police, but there was nothing we could do about it.
If it weren't for this situation, I wouldn't have risked being ridiculed by Bei Chen to seek his help.
After reviewing the materials, Bei Chen tossed the stack onto the coffee table and stretched lazily.
"What do you think?" I asked hurriedly. "Do you believe there are any characteristics of the perpetrator? Or any clues that could help us narrow down our search?"
"The perpetrator is a strong male and is left-handed," Bei Chen replied slowly.
"Is that all?"
"That's all," Bei Chen said, nodding at me before picking up a can of coffee from the coffee table.
"This isn't like you! Usually, when faced with a situation like this, you can go on for hours with your reasoning. Why are you only giving me this little bit of information now?"
I was a bit annoyed, but I knew Bei Chen wasn't doing it on purpose.

However, since the murderer was behind her, the only part of him she could have touched would be his hands. You see, the nail on Victim's right thumb is torn; it's clear that this was caused by contact with the murderer's hands.
Human skin can only bend nails; it can't tear them. So there's only one possibility— the murderer wears a Metal Watch.
Now, here's the problem: since Victim was strangled from behind, when she struggled, her right hand should have been gripping the murderer's right hand and her left hand gripping his left hand. That logic holds true, right?" Bei Chen looked at me, and I nodded in agreement.
He continued his reasoning: "So it gets strange. If the nail on the victim's right thumb is torn, that means the murderer's watch must be worn on his right wrist—opposite to what is typical. For instance, your watch is worn on your left wrist. From this point, we can conclude that the murderer is left-handed."
After hearing Bei Chen's deduction, although it made some sense, I still felt he hadn't said much at all.
Not to mention China; just in Shanghai alone there are over ten million people, and left-handed individuals are countless. The Bei Chen in front of me is a textbook example of a lefty.
If we were to use this standard to search for the criminal, it would undoubtedly be like searching for a needle in a haystack.
