The summer sun mercilessly scorched the ground, heat waves surged in every corner of the city and beach, even the branches under the banana leaves could hardly escape the fate of wilting from the heat. Even the cicadas in the trees were desperately straining their vocal muscles, seemingly afraid that their noise wouldn't reach people's ears.
As usual, whenever there was a sea breeze, the banana trees would dance affectionately with the waves rushing towards them by the beach.
"This kind of exclusive tacit understanding is probably rare in the world," Lu Sha, who had already started to sway with her eyes closed, squeezed her already shut eyes and continued to drag her body forward, step by step, firmly stepping into the sand.
But what Lu Sha didn't expect was how many tides the silent banana leaves by the shore had encountered to achieve such resonance.
It was simply too hot during the day; very few people would be willing to come out and bask in the sun by the sea.
Yet there was one girl.
The wind gently blew again, helping this girl sweep aside her beautiful red hair that blocked her view, but instead made it messier; strands of red hair clung tightly to her weary face due to the wind.
Unable to walk any further, Lu Sha leaned against a tree and raised a bottle of mineral water, shaking it vigorously until finally a drop fell into her mouth.
Lu Sha was extremely thirsty, and in this scorching heat... if she didn't replenish her fluids soon, she would really faint from heatstroke.
Through the mottled shadows of the trees, Lu Sha looked towards a five-star hotel across the street with a view of the sea and sighed.
If she could, Lu Sha really wanted to comfortably stay in an air-conditioned room for a day. But she didn't have much money and dared not spend it on anything.
Having been homeless for nearly a month now, Lu Sha slowly realized that when she walked down the street, extending her hand was just asking for money. In her eyes, this was simply exploitation; she was fed up with the dazzling array of goods on the street and the strange gazes from passersby. She decisively left the street and planned to see the seaside of this city.
City C was a coastal city with beautiful scenery; this was also why Lu Sha decided to come here. She wanted to take a good look at some of the world's most beautiful sights before her money ran out.
It was already thirty-nine degrees today...
Eventually, even breathing became somewhat difficult for Lu Sha; she felt her head throbbing more and more painfully. She knew she might be suffering from heatstroke.
Since she couldn't walk anymore, Lu Sha simply sat down under this patch of shade; even sitting down felt somewhat laborious. With a "thud," she collapsed onto the warm sand and closed her eyes.
Five hours later
When she woke up, it was already evening, and there was finally a hint of coolness in the air. Lu Sha took a deep breath, shielding her eyes with her hand as she tried to turn over.
Suddenly, a sensitive warning signal entered Lu Sha's consciousness—she felt something brush against her stomach, and then, as if startled by her sudden movement, something seemed to retreat quickly from her chest's most sensitive area!
"Ugh?!"
A rush of anger and embarrassment surged into Lu Sha's mind as she abruptly opened her eyes to see a man rubbing his hands together with a terrified expression on his face.
"Hey! What are you doing?!" Lu Sha sat up abruptly, pointing her Chain Spear at the man's head.
How dare a man take liberties with her! This was Lu Sha's first time feeling both shy and angry at once.
"Ah! I'm sorry! I just wanted to give you some water. I sensed your breath was very weak and worried you might have heatstroke, so I..."
Hearing the metallic clinking of chains under Lu Sha's arm, the man hurriedly raised the bottle he held to indicate he meant no harm.
"Then why did you still..."
"Just as I was about to say something, I suddenly stopped to question him. I noticed that this man's eyes were white, devoid of any life.
'Oh? A blind person?' I was somewhat surprised.
'This spot where you are lying is where I come every day to listen to the sea. When I found you and asked you a question, you didn't respond. I touched your cracked lips and thought you might be suffering from heatstroke, so I took out my water bottle. But then, I couldn't find your mouth anymore...' the man explained.
At this point, I couldn't help but chuckle at the absurdity of it all. 'Who feeds water to someone who's asleep? Aren't you afraid of choking me? Never mind, I don't blame you; you seem pitiful. What's wrong with your eyes?'
As I was getting up to leave, feeling a bit breathless, I casually threw out a comment.
'Blind, born this way,' the man said somewhat sadly.
'Born...?' I paused. 'You are also... born this way?'
'Yes.' He seemed to brush off my somewhat hurtful remark with a smile.
'You too? Are you also...?'
'Uh-huh...' I shrugged helplessly. 'Not exactly. I'm not blind, but I have naturally red hair. You might think that's cool... but actually, because of my hair color, I've suffered for eighteen years during my youth.'
The man fell silent for a moment before saying, 'I think we are quite similar. Because I was born blind, my parents abandoned me in an orphanage. You must have grown up amidst the laughter of your peers, right?'
I responded with a sound of acknowledgment.
'But... I've always fought hard like a normal person—studying for college, chasing my dreams. In short, I've never given up on my life.'
'Oh my!' I thought. This was almost identical to my own life! But if we were comparing who had it worse, he would definitely win.
Curiosity piqued, I squatted down again and decided to chat with this man for a while longer. Who knows, he might be willing to share his thoughts sincerely?
With that in mind, I quietly sat down.
Slowly, I learned that this man's name was Zhang Jiawen, and he was twenty-two years old, studying at Ocean University in City C. He loved books so much that after reading for a long time, what fascinated him most were the descriptions of the sea in literature. He memorized every author's depiction of the ocean, dreaming that one day he could see its beauty.
Now, Zhang Jiawen came to the beach in City C every day to sit and listen to the sea; it calmed his spirit while allowing him to imagine what the sea looked like.
As I listened to Zhang Jiawen's story, I kept my gaze fixed on him, studying his unusually pale face among boys. For some reason, his calm and gentle voice stirred feelings of affection within me.
However, just as I was lost in thought, Zhang Jiawen scratched his head awkwardly and asked, 'Is there something on my face?'
'How do you... sense that?' I was even more surprised.
'I can feel your gaze; it's very...' Zhang Jiawen suddenly stopped speaking.
'Very what?' I impatiently brushed off some sand."
"Very tender, seemingly a bit obsessed."
Seeing Zhang Jiawen analyze his feelings so straightforwardly and precisely, Lu Sha immediately pouted and turned her gaze away, unable to help but touch her slightly flushed cheeks.
"Can you describe the sunset? I really want to see the sea under the sunset."
As the two grew more familiar with each other, Zhang Jiawen raised his head and requested towards the direction of Sun.
This posed a challenge for Lu Sha.
"Uh..." Lu Sha said awkwardly, "I... I'll give it a try. Sun is half-hanging on the horizon between the sea and the sky, and the gradient of light ignites the clouds. Yellow with hints of orange, orange with hints of red, it's... quite... beautiful...? Oh no! I don't know how to say it; I only scored eighty-seven out of one hundred fifty in my Chinese exam!"
"No worries," Zhang Jiawen smiled and said, "'The sunset is redder than fire, and the clear sky is bluer than blue.' How about using this to describe the sunset?"
"Mm, okay."
"And what about 'The rustling trees are sparse outside the forest, half of the autumn mountains carry the sunset'?"
"Hey... that's even better. Wait, no! Ugh, this is so frustrating! We're not on the same wavelength!" Lu Sha complained angrily, hesitating as she considered standing up to leave.
But unexpectedly, Zhang Jiawen grabbed her hand as if he could see her.
"You..." An unfamiliar wave of emotion echoed in Lu Sha's heart as she turned to look at Zhang Jiawen's blank eyes; an inexplicable feeling began to rise in the mist.
After all, Lu Sha was just an eighteen-year-old girl who longed for a sweet memory.
"Don't go; stay with me a little longer. After all, your wandering can start anytime and end anytime,"
"How do you know..." At this point, Lu Sha felt a sense of admiration. She looked at the smiling man before her and ultimately chose to sit comfortably.
However, Lu Sha waited for a long time, but Zhang Jiawen fell silent again. The two simply listened to the sea quietly, as if it could convey their inner voices to each other.
Before leaving, at Zhang Jiawen's request, Lu Sha decided to stay in this city.
In the days that followed, during the day, Lu Sha wandered through various corners of the city, scavenging food with stray cats; when she got hot or tired, she would hide in the library and sleep on a table.
In the evenings, she would arrive at the seaside on time to listen to the waves with Zhang Jiawen, sharing their thoughts and feeling like they had met too late in life.
Both Lu Sha and Zhang Jiawen had been bullied by this world; they had always faced its storms alone before finally finding spiritual support in each other.
One day, Zhang Jiawen suddenly changed the subject and asked if she had a beloved man. Lu Sha denied it outright, but an ambiguous feeling stirred within her heart.
Lu Sha’s daily movements were captured by surveillance cameras throughout City C, quickly drawing police attention. The police from City D immediately set off for City C to prepare to bring her into custody.
As usual, Lu Sha went to the seaside to listen to the waves with Zhang Jiawen. When she walked up beside him, she noticed there was a birthday cake next to him.
"Is it your birthday?!" Lu Sha exclaimed in surprise and joy. "I didn’t get you a birthday gift! You didn’t say anything; how could you?"
Zhang Jiawen smiled and gestured for her to sit down: "It's fine; I've already received the best birthday gift."
"Oh really...? That's great." Sitting in the sand pit, Lu Sha hugged her knees and lowered her head silently, feeling a bit sad. "You brought a cake to eat on the beach for your birthday? I really don’t understand you, haha..."
"Sasa, there's something I want to say to you..." Looking at the enchanting smile of Lu Sha as she tossed her hair in his imagination, Zhang Jiawen pretended to gaze at Sun.
In an instant, Lu Sha felt her heart racing, a sense of intoxication spreading throughout her body, making the whole world feel somewhat surreal.
"What are you doing, calling out so... disgustingly?"
"Will you be my girlfriend?" Zhang Jiawen blurted out in one breath. "Sasa, I know you might dislike me for being blind, but my feelings for you are sincere. I..."
"No need to say more." Lu Sha shyly reached out and covered his mouth. "Did I ever say I would dislike you just because you can't see?"
"I promise you."
"Really?!" Zhang Jiawen exclaimed in surprise.
"Why are you mumbling so loudly~ Seriously." Lu Sha shifted closer to him, lightly swatting his shoulder before slowly resting her head on it.
Perhaps due to the hardships in life, Lu Sha didn't ask for much; as long as someone was willing to accept her, she would be content.
Lu Sha wasn't sure if this counted as love; it might just be simple reliance or a desire for comfort.
The two exchanged sweet words and flirtatious banter until eleven at night, reluctantly bidding each other farewell.
For the first time, Lu Sha felt the sweetness of love. She decided she would no longer wander; she would stay and marry him, have children, and create a warm home together—how perfect that would be!
"I, Lu Sha, have a boyfriend now!" How she wished she could shout this out!
However, the gradually approaching sound of police sirens in the distance reminded her of her current identity.
Lu Sha quickly snapped out of the fantasy love had granted her and walked to the intersection, only to find a police car blocking her path.
"Oh no!" Lu Sha frantically looked around; two police cars were parked in every direction, tightly surrounding her. It suddenly dawned on her that she had a life to account for; it was heaven urging her to repay her debts.
But she didn't want to! She wanted to live, for the sake of the person she loved!
As the police approached her, she suddenly shot out her Chain Spear, transforming it into a pickaxe shape that lodged into the wall. Then she hooked it onto a higher point. Lu Sha quickly pulled herself up.
Just when Lu Sha thought she had escaped, a sharp pain suddenly pierced her waist. Looking down, she saw a syringe.
She immediately pulled it out but soon felt completely drained of strength. She tried to climb up again, but the pickaxe loosened from the wall, and she fell heavily to the ground.
Jiao An approached with a gun, looking at Lu Sha, who could only move her eyes. "Just cooperate; we don't want to hurt you."
Lu Sha glared at Jiao An, then shifted her gaze toward the beach as tears streamed down her face like a fountain.
"Goodbye, my love."
