As soon as dawn broke, I got up and went to the yard to practice. Large movements were out of the question, so I could only close my eyes and empty my mind to cultivate my inner strength.
Just as I closed my eyes, I heard a familiar voice. "Not bad, you know to get up early to practice. It seems my teaching has been effective!"
I felt a bit speechless; it was just me being strict with myself. It had nothing to do with him.
"Master, what do you think of this house? When you have time, come stay here for a while! You can also help me attract some business," I said.
The Master laughed, "Don't blame me if the business is bad when you get back."
I chuckled, "I wouldn't do such a thing!"
Then I followed the Master to the district entrance for breakfast. I dared not eat buns anymore, so I ordered some fried snacks with porridge.
While eating, the Master said, "First, I came to see how you're doing. Have your injuries healed?"
I patted my chest and replied, "No problem! Just look at who my master is! As long as I'm not dead, I'll always pull through!"
The Master nodded. "Secondly, I hope during this time you won't go anywhere. Stay home and recuperate or go back to your hometown to spend some time with your father."
I looked at the Master with suspicion, feeling that something was off about him. He seemed to be hiding something and his expression was unnatural.
"What about the Evil Spirit Cult? Besides, I promised Liu Er that I'd go save her!" I said to myself.
But the Master suddenly lost his temper. "I told you not to go, so don't go! Why are you asking so many questions?"
The sound of his chopsticks slamming heavily on the table drew the attention of those at the nearby stalls.
I felt somewhat bewildered but thought to myself: You do your thing; I'll do mine!
My master understood me well. "Don't entertain those thoughts, Ling Feng. From now on, you need to focus on healing and not worry about anything else. If you don't listen to me, our master-disciple bond will come to an end!"
His tone was serious, and I couldn't comprehend why I couldn't go. So I shouted, "Master, just tell me directly. Why can't I deal with the Evil Spirit Cult?"
Suddenly, my master's gaze softened, and he reached out to pat my head. "Ling Feng, I've lived my whole life without children. You’ve grown up by my side; though we are master and disciple, it's almost like father and son. Your father and I still hope to have grandchildren and someone to take care of us in our old age!"
His words were slow, carrying a sense of irrevocable sorrow. I had never seen my master like this before. In an instant, my anger dissipated.
"Listen, Ling Feng," he continued, "I've never asked anything of you before. Promise me you won't get involved with the Evil Spirit Cult. As for your Liu Er, leave her to me! I will make sure to bring her back safe and sound!"
Seeing my master like this, I couldn't argue any further and could only nod in agreement. Besides, with the big shots from the Special Investigation Bureau and the skilled fighters they had brought along, any one of them could easily overpower me. My involvement with the Evil Spirit Cult was inconsequential.
After giving his instructions, my master strode away.
After breakfast, Feng Daoist took Ruo Yu and Ruo Zhuo with him to train them in martial arts separately.
The once lively house suddenly felt empty. Jian Jie and Hong Chou also came down, clearly preparing to leave as well. I was surprised and asked, "Are you two leaving too?"
Jian Jie teased, "Are you really hoping to enjoy a happy life while leaving us here to serve you?"
With that, he left in a carefree manner, adding at the end, "Ling Feng, thank you for your hospitality these past few days. Once I'm done with my business, I'll come back and treat you to a meal!"
Watching Jian Jie’s departing figure and glancing around the empty house made me feel quite unsettled.
So I locked the door and headed over to Jiang Jianguo's house, planning to check on Fo Zhang. That ungrateful fellow had stayed at the Jiang Family and seemed completely oblivious to returning home.
When I arrived at the Jiang Family's place, a servant opened the door just as Fo Zhang jumped into my arms, chirping incessantly. Holding him close, I noticed he seemed to have gained quite a bit of weight.
There was no one else at home. After greeting the servant and asking them to pass along a message, I took Fo Zhang and left.
After taking several buses, I finally arrived home around three in the afternoon.
As I inserted the key into the lock, I noticed that the door was slightly ajar. A chill ran down my spine—was there a brazen thief who dared to break into his home? How reckless could someone be?
I signaled to Fo Zhang to remain quiet, then gently pushed the door open. I searched both upstairs and downstairs but found nothing amiss.
After checking everything again, I realized nothing was missing. I couldn't help but wonder if I was overreacting—had I left the door unlocked when I left?
Just as I was shaking my head at my own paranoia, a sudden thought struck me: something seemed off since I entered the house.
I hurried to the front desk to check on the Lucky Cat. Normally, whenever I returned home, Xuan would cling to me, complaining about being starved.
But today, there was nothing. Moreover, Fo Zhang showed no interest in playing with Xuan.
I lit three incense sticks, but Xuan still didn’t appear. A sense of foreboding washed over me. Upon closer inspection, I realized Xuan was missing—had something happened to him? Was he dead?
As I stood there holding the Lucky Cat in a daze, my peripheral vision caught sight of a note where the Lucky Cat usually sat. It read: "To save this ghost head and Wen Liuer, come to Binh Jiang Road No. 4 in three days. If you bring anyone else, I'll kill them!"
My heart sank—Liu Er had been captured too? Had she revealed her identity? Was the messenger from the Evil Spirit Cult?
Everything felt like a tangled web of mysteries. If it was indeed the Evil Spirit Cult, why did they want to see me? And why had my master warned me against getting involved with them?
Who exactly was I?
In that moment, my mind raced with confusion, feeling as if it might explode. Fo Zhang seemed to sense my distress and began jumping around on the floor, squealing in fear.
I crouched down and took a long time to regain my composure. At that moment, I resolved that no matter who came for me, I could not abandon Liu Er and Xuan!
With that thought in mind, I forced myself to calm down and began to meditate. Only with enough strength could I face whatever unknown dangers lay ahead.
I said to Fo Zhang, "You go stay with the Jiang Family for a while. I need to focus on my cultivation, so I probably won't be able to accompany you."
To my surprise, this time it didn't leave. No matter how much I urged it, it remained, likely frightened by what had just happened.
So, while I cultivated, it settled down on the sofa and fell asleep.
I took out the Wood Heart and placed it over the wound on my chest. Using Fo Xi, I catalyzed the powerful life force within the Wood Heart and slowly infused it into the wound.
I could almost hear the sound of flesh growing and feel the tingling sensation as the wound healed.
In addition to my cultivation, I had also prepared some Talismans and other items, making sure I was fully prepared.
Now, I just had to wait for three days to rescue Liu Er and Xuan.
