Accompanied by the sound of footsteps, the voices outside gradually faded away. I lay on the ground, my mind a muddled mess.
It seemed that Fo Gua was still asleep; otherwise, I wouldn't be suffering so much. However, since I wanted to see if the newcomers were the ones I was waiting for, this little hardship was nothing.
I felt as if I had been forgotten by them, with no water and no food. I listened to the sounds outside, sometimes tranquil, sometimes busy. I decided to close my eyes and begin meditating; it was the most effective way to fend off hunger.
Through the cracks in the window, I saw the light outside gradually dimming. At that moment, the massive iron gate of the courtyard creaked open, accompanied by the sound of a car engine shutting off.
Then came the heavy thud of a car door slamming shut. "Holy Maiden, you've had a long journey. Dinner is ready. However, in this rural area, I hope you won't mind," said Xia Xing.
After a flurry of footsteps, the courtyard returned to silence.
I did not hear the voice I longed for.
I thought I would go hungry tonight. After a while, the door opened, and two burly men dragged me out.
"Are you two big brothers taking me to dinner? I'm starving and feeling dizzy," I asked with a smile.
One of them snorted coldly. "Our Holy Maiden wants to see you! As for dinner... there are plenty of leftover bones on the table. If you can fight off those dogs for some, that would be your skill!"
The other man laughed heartily. The Holy Maiden wanted to see me? Suddenly, I felt nervous—hoping it was her but also dreading it. If it truly was her, I hoped I wouldn’t give myself away!
After being locked in a dim room for so long, stepping into this brightly lit one made my eyes hurt; I squinted for a while before adjusting.
When I finally looked up at the girl seated at the head of the table, although she wore a black veil, those familiar eyes made me freeze momentarily. My heart raced with thoughts of not revealing any flaws.
Seeing her expression remain as cold as ever put me at ease.
Suddenly, pain shot through my knee as someone kicked me hard, causing me to kneel involuntarily. The man shouted, "What are you looking at? Keep staring and I'll gouge your eyes out to feed to the dogs! Kneel when you see the Holy Maiden!"
A large hand pressed down on my back, trying to force me down to the ground. Yet even in my dazed state, I was not someone two thugs could easily subdue. We were locked in a stalemate when suddenly a clear and cold female voice rang out, "Enough! Let him go! Compared to someone who kneels at first sight, I prefer this kind!"
She walked right up to me and grabbed my hair, forcing me to tilt my head back and meet her gaze. "The more unruly you are, the more interesting it gets! I want to see how long you can hold out in my hands!"
She laughed, a sound as clear and melodious as wind chimes.
Xia Xing said, "Saintess, this person is from the Special Investigation Bureau that we captured. Since the Special Investigation Bureau has taken notice of this place, it might not be safe anymore. How about we..."
The Saintess snorted coldly, "What is there to fear? This isn’t the core area of the Special Investigation Bureau. Even if it were, why should our Evil Spirit Cult be afraid of them?"
Xia Xing replied, "That’s true, Saintess. Under the leadership of the Holy Son, our Evil Spirit Cult has made remarkable progress over the past few years, so there’s no need to be afraid. However, this place is crucial; it’s better to be cautious than to regret later! We should remain vigilant!"
The Saintess shot a cold glance at Xia Xing and said nothing. It was Yao Ji who chimed in with a sweet voice, "We will follow whatever the Saintess commands!"
Only then did the Saintess shift her gaze away and yawned, "I’m tired today. Let’s discuss any matters tomorrow."
She turned to leave but paused at the door to say, "He’s quite interesting. Once I’ve regained my energy, I’ll have some fun with him!"
The Saintess pointed at me with a playful smile, reminiscent of lovers teasing each other; yet it felt entirely different when it reached my ears.
The two burly men behind me exchanged sympathetic glances.
Once the Saintess left, Xia Xing slammed his palm heavily on the table. It was indeed frustrating to be schooled by someone who was less experienced.
Yao Ji placed his hand on his mouth and blew gently as a form of consolation. "Why bother? You have to remember that as long as she’s with the Holy Son, she’ll be our future master. Is it worth getting upset with her?"
Xia Xing replied unhappily, "I’m just looking out for her. If we don’t make plans early and the Special Investigation Bureau comes after us, what will she do then? In the end, it’ll be us taking the blame."
Yao Ji laughed, "With such a big figure around, how could we possibly take the blame? Besides, so many people witnessed what happened. The Holy Son may have an unpredictable temperament, but he’s reasonable. If his own wife makes a mistake, there’s no way he’ll pin it on us! Just relax!"
After thinking it over, Xia Xing agreed and stopped dwelling on it. He reached over and gave Yao Ji's waist a hard pinch before turning to me and saying, "Since the Saintess values you so much, consider it your good fortune."
Two steamed buns and a bowl of water were brought to me, and then I was thrown back into the dark room.
My hands and feet were tied, but fortunately, the person didn’t make things too difficult for me. After placing the buns and water down, they left. I could only shift my body to the ground and finish off the buns. With something in my stomach, my mind started to clear up a bit.
It seemed that Liu Er was doing quite well in the Holy Demon Sect; at least no one was bullying her!
I hadn’t expected that this girl had grown capable as well, teaching others a lesson with some flair. The way she looked at Xia Xing scared Yao Ji quite a bit.
The girl had finally grown up!
In the stillness of the night, I heard a slight noise outside. I opened my eyes and looked towards the door.
The door cracked open, and a delicate figure squeezed in.
I whispered, “You’re here!”
After a moment, she giggled and said, “ Ling Feng, how did you know it was me?”
“Of course I recognize my own sister,” I replied.
Liu Er pouted and said, “But I’m covering my face! There’s no way you could recognize me.” Then she added, “ Ling Feng, I really didn’t expect to meet under such circumstances.”
I laughed and said, “Who isn’t worried? I was just afraid you’d slip up. Who knew you’d be so ruthless? You almost pulled out all of Ling Feng ’s new hair!”
Liu Er chuckled lightly, “If we’re putting on a show, it has to be convincing! Sorry about that, Ling Feng!”
I shook my head. “It’s fine! You did great!”
“You…”
“You…”
Liu Er and I spoke almost simultaneously. Liu Er said, “ Ling Feng, you go first!”
I didn’t hesitate, “Liu Er, how are you doing in the Holy Demon Sect?”
Liu Er replied, “It’s neither good nor bad. Life still has to go on!”
Hearing her words, I knew she wasn’t doing well. Beyond the material aspects, she must be feeling unhappy inside.
“Why not leave the Holy Demon Sect? You, Ling Feng, are running a company now and can support yourself!” I suggested.
Liu Er teased, “ Ling Feng, maybe you should take a look at the current situation first!”
