I observed the man from J Country, Yamamoto Taro, who spoke Mandarin with perfect clarity. "Have you all given up?" I asked curiously.
"It's just a sparring session. There's no need to take it so seriously," Yamamoto Taro replied with a wave of his hand and a smile.
Matsushima Kazumi seemed quite dissatisfied and shot me a glare. I chose to ignore it; after all, I had already gained an advantage, so there was no need to act like a hypocrite.
Han Che, having spent more time in the Special Investigation Bureau, noticed that the previously tense atmosphere had dissipated. He began arranging for the J Country delegation to head to their hotel for some rest.
Before leaving, Yamamoto Taro gave me a meaningful glance that sent chills down my spine. I turned to Solemn and asked, "Is this really over?"
Solemn countered, "What did you expect? Are we supposed to treat you to dinner?"
I felt that something was off about the situation, but I couldn't pinpoint it. Solemn leaned in mischievously and asked, "How did that last move feel? Was it exhilarating?"
I pulled Solemn into a headlock with my arm and said, "If you're so curious, why don't you give it a try yourself?"
Solemn begged for mercy while saying, "I can't beat her! If I could, I'd have knocked her down and sat on her."
As an inland city, H City wasn't particularly economically developed; by strict standards, it could only be considered a third-tier city. I wondered why the J Nationals chose to investigate here instead of a more representative coastal city.
"Solemn, do you have any way to find out the backgrounds of everyone in this delegation?" I asked with curiosity.
Solemn nodded. "It shouldn't be too difficult. I have friends in J Country, and combined with domestic information, we should be able to gather quite a bit."
We headed straight back to the police station. I first checked on Fei Fei; several people looked as wilted as frostbitten eggplants. Upon seeing me, they quickly gathered around. " Ling Feng, has the situation been resolved?"
I replied, "It's a bit complicated; I'm afraid you'll have to endure for a while longer."
Ji Bai kicked a nearby chair away in frustration; it seemed this young master was getting restless being cooped up here. Ignoring him, I turned to the others and asked, "Has there been any talk about the old building behind your school’s playground? Anything from a while back?"
After thinking for a moment, Jingjing said, "It seems that during the war, our school was in the enemy-occupied area, and that old building was built by the enemy as a laboratory. I don't know what kind of experiments they conducted there."
I pondered over this. Since it was a laboratory, it was likely related to some kind of experiments, and that Matsushima Naoko was probably one of the accompanying researchers.
What puzzled me was why she had been trapped in that old building all this time. If that were true, what kind of energy could possibly confine Matsushima Naoko within those walls?
Soon, Solemn brought over the information. The person who came this time, Yamamoto Taro, was a key figure from the Yamamoto Family, a major conglomerate in J Country.
Although they claimed to be here for exchange and inspection, it seemed they were secretly searching for something, though the specifics remained unknown.
The seven individuals accompanying him were all experts from J Country. Among them was Matsushima Kazumi, whom I had fought before; she belonged to the ninja clan. There were also Onmyoji, Shikigami, samurai, and others.
No wonder they had been so arrogant before; they had bodyguards with them. Yet for some reason, I felt that something was off about the situation.
I decided to visit the old building again that night to inquire further. Of course, I would go alone this time; it would make it easier to come and go.
Under the bright moonlight and gentle evening breeze, I got out of the taxi and found a relatively secluded spot by the school wall. With a running start, I climbed up the wall and successfully entered the school grounds.
As I made my way to the old building, I suddenly sensed that there might be someone inside.
I gripped my Ruyi Stick tightly and refrained from turning on my flashlight, relying instead on the cool moonlight as I moved forward.
First floor, second floor, third floor…
I found nothing unusual until I approached the fourth floor when I heard voices conversing in J Country's language.
Crouching low, I intended to get closer to see who they were. Just as I lifted my foot to move forward, a sharp voice rang out, "Who goes there?"
Thinking it might be a trick, I held my breath and remained still. Suddenly, a figure darted toward me; a long sword nearly sliced through my throat. The cold glint of the blade flashed past me, causing my throat to tighten instinctively. As I reached out in defense, the sword's aura grazed my skin, leaving a thin cut.
I casually turned on the flashlight and directed the beam towards the person. The bright light hit their eyes, and they instinctively raised a hand to shield themselves.
I swung my stick and struck their leg. The person let out a muffled groan but surprisingly didn’t fall; instead, they dashed up to the fourth floor.
I cautiously followed them up to the fourth floor. The barrier was still in place, and inside, Matsushima Naoko looked at me anxiously and said, “Please don’t hurt her! She just came to find me.”
“Who is Matsushima Kazumi to you?” I asked curiously.
Realizing her identity was exposed, Matsushima Kazumi decided not to hide any longer. She stepped forward, pointing her sword at me threateningly. “Let her go!”
I crossed my arms defiantly, adopting a posture that said, “What are you going to do about it?”
Matsushima Kazumi twirled her sword and was about to lunge at me when Matsushima Naoko stopped her. “Kazumi, don’t be rude! Even if we break this barrier, I can’t leave this building.”
Kazumi replied, “That won’t happen. I promised my father I would bring you back! If not, I’ll ask my master; he will definitely have a way!”
“Your master?” Matsushima Naoko asked. Kazumi nodded, “My Master, Yamamoto Taro, is the most powerful Onmyoji of the Yamamoto Family. He will surely have a solution!”
Matsushima Naoko looked relieved and said, “Kazumi, just seeing you makes me very content. You look so much like your father.”
Although I couldn’t understand their bird-like language, I could guess the general sentiment from their expressions.
Reunited family after a long separation!
I dispelled the barrier and said to Matsushima Naoko, “I hope you can help me find the murderer. Perhaps once I deal with that killer, you can leave?”
Matsushima Kazumi clearly didn’t trust me and began voicing her concerns to Matsushima Naoko.
Naoko replied, “I can help you, but I hope that once it’s done, you will let me go!”
“I am not someone who cannot distinguish right from wrong. Your soul is very pure; otherwise, I wouldn’t have kept you here until now,” I nodded and said.
Matsushima Naoko bowed to me and said, “Thank you for your care!”
Since the matter had been settled, I didn’t plan to stay any longer. However, as I was going downstairs, a dark figure walked in from outside.
I quickly shrank back and hid in the corner on the second floor.
Moonlight streamed through the window, casting a slanting glow on the person’s face.
I couldn’t help but be surprised; it was him!
But what was he doing here in the dead of night? Moreover, it seemed he was holding something in his hand, constantly adjusting its direction!
