Fortunately, I had saved someone from drowning before. After some struggle, Wang Chenggong coughed up a few large mouthfuls of water. His eyes, filled with sheer terror, softened a bit when they met mine.
“How can you nearly drown just from taking a bath?” I asked, feigning confusion.
Wang Chenggong, still trembling and unaware that he was naked, replied, “Something was holding me down in the water. No matter how hard I struggled, it was useless!”
“Well, since you’re fine now, I’ll be on my way. You can continue to rest!” I said as I stood up to leave.
However, I found that I couldn’t lift my foot. Looking down, I saw Wang Chenggong clutching my leg tightly. “Don’t go! I’ll go back with you. I promise I won’t come out again!”
I chuckled, “Are you sure you want to go out like this?”
Only then did Wang Chenggong awkwardly scramble to get dressed. He clung to my clothes like a lifeline, refusing to let go.
Ji Bai had calmed down considerably but still didn’t plan to return with us; instead, he took a taxi home! Shan Shan decided to accompany us back to the police station.
After dropping them off at the station, Solemn and I noticed that night had fallen deeply and sleepiness had long since faded away. So we drove straight to the school.
“Solemn, I’ll go in for a bit. You wait for me outside!” I suggested.
Solemn disagreed. “Of course we go in together! Even though I can’t handle those things, I can still help you out in some way!”
I shrugged; I knew Solemn was stubborn too. It seemed neither of us would back down, so I decided not to push it any further.
The school security guard was probably dozing off. Solemn honked the horn a couple of times before the guard sleepily approached the car and knocked on the window. “Who’s there?”
Solemn opened his police badge in front of the guard’s eyes. The guard stepped back a bit and shone his flashlight on it. Once he recognized it, he smiled and said, “Officer, you’re really dedicated to your work coming out this late to investigate!”
As the gate swung open, Solemn slammed on the accelerator and shot into the campus.
The trees within the campus stood tall, and the pale streetlights lined the sides of the road. The light was particularly dim, hidden beneath the shadows of the trees.
Solemn parked the car outside the playground. We climbed over the fence and entered the field, where we could faintly see a dilapidated old building looming amidst thick clusters of trees.
At the bottom of the fence, someone had cut a hole. Solemn and I squeezed through, taking what could be considered a shortcut.
While we were in the car, I had given Solemn two talismans and handed over a string of obsidian prayer beads for protection.
The closer we got to the old building, the more the temperature seemed to drop sharply.
Solemn wrapped his arms around his chest. "Ling Feng, what kind of place is this? Why is it so cold? But if it were summer, wouldn’t it be nice here? You wouldn't even need air conditioning."
I laughed and replied, "Then in the summer, I’ll summon a couple of female ghosts to cool your house down."
My implication was clear, and Solemn caught on. "I didn’t see that coming, Ling Feng! Were you often up to such things in the past?"
I chuckled, "Your imagination is quite vivid!"
I shone my flashlight around; the old building was mostly just a skeleton now. The windows were gone, revealing hollow darkness that looked like empty eye sockets after being gouged out.
Perhaps due to the beam of light sweeping across, a flock of unknown birds flapped their wings and flew out.
Solemn jumped back in surprise but relaxed once he realized they were just birds.
He followed closely behind me as we ventured inside, leaving behind a half-opened, decrepit door. The entire building was quite large, with five floors in total!
Inside, it was a mess, filled with tangled spider webs, discarded plastic bags, and snack wrappers. Clusters of vibrant green weeds had forced their way up through the concrete floor.
The first floor consisted of a large hall and a couple of small rooms, all visible at a glance. After checking around, I found nothing useful.
Except for piles of mouse droppings and feces from some unknown animal.
The stairs were made of concrete, so they made no sound when stepped on.
The second floor featured a long corridor with rooms facing each other on both sides.
The layout on the third floor was similar. Some rooms contained old beds covered in dusty white plastic sheets.
The fourth floor resembled the first, with a large hall left open. A big oilcloth was spread across the floor, covered in various writings, and in the center sat a bowl. It was clear this was where Fei Fei and the others played their spirit summoning game.
I turned to Solemn, who seemed a bit uncomfortable under my intense gaze. “Ling Feng, what are you planning to do?”
I smiled and asked, “Are you brave enough to give it a try?”
Solemn looked at the bowl on the ground. “You want to play that damned game too?”
I nodded. “Want to join me in experiencing it?”
Feeling provoked by my words, he thumped his chest confidently. “Today, I’m going to see what kind of ghostly nonsense is going on!”
Sitting face to face with Solemn, I held his hands and began to follow the steps Fei Fei and the others had taken earlier. I placed my hand on the bowl and asked, “Who are you? What do you want?”
I pressed down hard with my fingers on the bowl, but it still moved erratically across the oilcloth as if it were uncontrollable.
My expression changed dramatically as I quickly took out Shari and pressed it against the bowl.
The bowl instantly became still!
There was a flow of dark energy around us, but there was no sign of Yuan Hun. I couldn't help but feel curious, my mind racing with thoughts about how this bowl was moving.
There were marks on the oilcloth where the bowl had passed. I glanced at them and then took out my flashlight to examine them closely. The characters traced by the bowl formed a message:
I want to go home!
Unable to contain my frustration, I shouted into the void, “If you want to go home, then go! But taking lives is absolutely unacceptable!”
In response, there was only silence. At that moment, Solemn jumped up, “Ling Feng, when did you wake up? I felt like I’ve been holding your hand the whole time!”
I replied, “I’ve been awake for quite a while now. You didn’t even notice…”
Solemn shivered involuntarily, “You’re not joking, are you?”
I said solemnly, “Do you think I’m someone who enjoys making jokes?”
Not willing to give up, I began reciting scriptures, hoping to force out the Gui Wu lurking in the shadows with Buddhist Scriptures. However, despite my lengthy chanting, there was still nothing but silence!
I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of entity this was and why none of my methods seemed to provoke it.
Solemn said, “Ling Feng, it will be light soon. Let’s head back! We need to think this through carefully!”
I agreed! So I followed Solemn downstairs.
A circle, another circle, and yet another...
“Hey? How come we’ve been walking for so long and still haven’t reached the first floor?” Solemn said.
I was lost in my thoughts and didn’t pay much attention. As soon as Solemn spoke, I felt something was off. After hastily walking for a while, I realized it seemed like we would never reach the first floor.
I raised my flashlight and shone it over to the side. On the dilapidated door, the dusty number plate faintly revealed the number 401.
It turned out we had been wandering around the fourth floor all this time!
“Ling Feng, could it be that we’re trapped by the Ghost Wall? Aren’t you supposed to be so clever? Hurry up and think of a way out!” Solemn urged.
