As Ruo Yu and I hurried to Fei Fei's school, we found the girls' dormitory cordoned off with police tape, and a crowd of female college students in pajamas stood outside.
Under normal circumstances, I would have taken a moment to appreciate such a scene of beauty, but not today—my little sister was still inside!
I squeezed my way to the front, ready to rush in, but two police officers stopped me. "No unauthorized personnel allowed. Please cooperate with our work!"
I immediately grabbed one of the officer's arms, covering my eyes with my other hand as I cried out, "Oh, my poor sister! I've come too late!"
Hearing my wail, another officer said, "Since you’re a family member of the deceased, you can go in. Just remember not to run around or disturb anything; if you tamper with the evidence, we won't be able to catch the person who harmed your sister."
Ruo Yu and I slipped inside and made a beeline for Fei Fei's dorm room on the fourth floor, room 404!
As soon as we entered, I heard someone calling for me from the duty room. I paused and turned around to see Fei Fei crying uncontrollably. Tears streamed down her face like an open faucet.
I comforted her by patting her back. "It's okay now; Ling Feng is here!"
After a long while, Fei Fei finally calmed down enough for me to ask, "What exactly happened? Who is Qiao Qiao?"
As soon as I asked, Fei Fei started sobbing again.
Frustrated and anxious, I felt like rushing in to see for myself what was going on.
After a moment of crying, I noticed she was shaking badly. I poured her a cup of hot water to warm her hands before speaking again. "There are four of us in our dorm: me, Qiao Qiao, Shan Shan, and Jing Jing. Qiao Qiao and I are the closest; we do everything together. Who would have thought she would die so tragically..."
Fei Fei cried out again, " Ling Feng, you have to help me get revenge for Qiao Qiao!"
I nodded and asked, "Did anything unusual happen tonight? Think carefully; even the smallest detail could matter!"
Fei Fei furrowed her brow and recalled slowly, "Nothing particularly strange happened. After I returned from your place, I told them that my brother was treating us to dinner tomorrow and asked them to keep their schedules clear. We laughed just like always until lights out at eleven. Around ten-thirty, we all fell asleep. I woke up in the middle of the night because it was freezing; my bed is next to the window..."
She took a sip of hot tea and continued, "When I opened my eyes, the window was open and the curtains were blowing wildly. But I remember closing it before going to bed. Even though I was really tired and didn’t want to get out from under the covers because of how cold it was, the wind was unbearable so I decided to get up and close the window. Since there was light from the streetlamp outside, I didn’t turn on the light—who knew..."
I was listening intently when Fei Fei suddenly stopped again to take another sip of water. "Who knew that I would find Qiao Qiao sitting at the table? Because girls have so many things, we had set up a table under the window covered with some clutter. I reached out to poke Qiao Qiao gently to tell her to go back to bed so she wouldn’t catch a cold. But when I touched her, she felt ice-cold! My heart dropped; still gathering my courage, I called out 'Qiao Qiao' and pushed her again! When I pushed her harder this time, her head tilted suddenly and something came out of her mouth. A bad feeling washed over me as I trembled while getting off my bed and walked over to turn on the light. When the white light illuminated the room, I was frozen in shock."
Fei Fei swallowed hard; terror filled her eyes. "A bright red tongue hung down all the way to Qiao Qiao's chest! Her head was tilted awkwardly and there seemed to be a rope around her neck—the other end tied to the steel frame of the window! Qiao Qiao had been hanged!"
After uttering that last sentence, Fei Fei collapsed forward in exhaustion. Luckily, I caught her just in time; otherwise, she would have fallen hard.
“Ruo Yu, you stay here with Gu Feifei. I'm going up to take a look and see if there are any clues!” I placed Fei Fei on the makeshift bed set up by the duty staff and turned to Ruo Yu.
Ruo Yu nodded, “Don’t worry. Your sister is my sister too. As long as I have breath in me, I won’t let her come to harm.”
I dashed up to the fourth floor, only to be stopped by someone guarding the stairway. “They’re collecting evidence inside!”
As a law-abiding citizen, I obediently stood at the stairway, constantly glancing around.
Sure enough, luck was on my side; it couldn’t be stopped. A familiar face emerged from one of the dorm rooms. I waved my hand enthusiastically and called out, “Solemn! Over here!”
Solemn rubbed his nose and walked over to me, lowering his voice, “Can you show a little discretion? At least give me some respect. In front of my subordinates, you should call me Officer Zhuang or Sir Zhuang!”
I chuckled, “Sure! I’ll remember that next time, Sir Zhuang!”
Only then did Solemn wave at the police officer, signaling for them to let me through. I leaned closer to Solemn and asked, “What’s going on now? Any clues?”
Solemn suddenly seemed to realize something and looked at me as if he had seen a ghost. “What are you doing here in the middle of the night?”
I explained, “My sister studies at this school!”
Solemn’s eyes were filled with suspicion. “What a coincidence! She wouldn’t happen to live in this room too, would she?”
I nodded. “Seriously, what’s the situation now?”
Solemn sighed, “The forensic team has searched twice; there are no footprints or fingerprints. It’s initially determined to be a suicide!”
“Could it be that it wasn’t done by a person?” I countered.
Solemn stroked his chin thoughtfully. If he had heard such a thing before, he would have dismissed it as nonsense. But after what happened previously, he couldn’t afford not to believe it. “Did you notice something?”
I pulled Solemn to the other end of the corridor. “When my sister visited me yesterday, I noticed that she had an unusually heavy aura around her. I intended to investigate further but didn’t expect something like this to happen tonight.”
Hearing this, Solemn said, “If what you say is true, I’ll go back and file a report to transfer the case to the Special Investigation Bureau.”
I nodded and asked Solemn to take me to the crime scene.
It was a standard four-person dormitory. As soon as we entered, we saw the body half-lying on the floor. It appeared there were no signs of struggle; a common nylon rope was tied to the steel frame of the window.
I lit the Rhinoceros Horn Incense in the corner and silently recited the incantation. Logically, after a person dies, while the Three Souls and Seven Spirits may not all be nearby, it shouldn't be that there is nothing at all!
Solemn noticed my unusual demeanor and asked, "Have you discovered something?"
I replied in a low voice, "Her soul is missing!"
After a night of turmoil, I finally brought Fei Fei home when dawn broke. I could no longer stay at school, let alone in that dormitory.
Firstly, it was too easy to be reminded of her by the surroundings. Secondly, if anything strange were to happen again, I would be powerless to help.
It was better to bring her home; having her by my side made me feel more at ease. Besides, there was an empty room on the second floor.
As for what exactly had happened, I needed to settle Fei Fei first before I could return and investigate thoroughly.
