I asked again, "Fei Fei, you and Ling Feng have never been to school, let alone university. When you have time tomorrow, take me to your school for a visit. I want to experience the rich academic atmosphere of university."
I chuckled to myself. Fei Fei looked at me suspiciously and asked, " Ling Feng, why do I feel like something's off with you today?"
I scratched my head and replied, "Is there? Haven't I always been like this?"
Fei Fei turned to Ruo Yu and said, "Ruo Yu, don't you think Ling Feng seems a bit abnormal today?"
Suddenly called out, Ruo Yu froze for a moment and then broke into a silly grin at Fei Fei.
Fei Fei felt a bit embarrassed under Ruo Yu's gaze and shyly said, "Ruo Yu, she's asking you a question! Why are you just grinning like an idiot?"
I was trying hard to signal Ruo Yu from across the table, but aside from our combat synergy, we had no understanding in daily life.
Ruo Yu chuckled and said, "Yes! Yes! Yes!"
Fei Fei couldn't get mad at him for his awkward repetition. She turned her gaze back to me, her eyes filled with curiosity. Holding a cloth in her hand, she said, " Ling Feng, you better come clean. What are you really up to?"
With no other choice, I dragged Ruo Yu into it. "Your brother is getting older too, right? This issue still relies on you, my dear sister, to keep an eye on things. I've heard that your medical school is full of beautiful girls; of course I want to go take a good look and maybe even pick one out for you, Ruo Yu."
Fei Fei scoffed, "I knew it! You men are all the same."
I shamelessly replied, "You can't say that! Confucius said that food and sex are natural instincts; it's just the way of nature!"
Fei Fei pouted and said, "Fine, fine. But if you're coming over, I'll introduce you to my roommate!"
Hearing this was promising, I leaned closer and whispered in her ear, "Is she pretty?"
Fei Fei pinched my arm without warning, making me wince in pain. "Superficial!"
Then she warned me sternly, " Ling Feng, I’m warning you—my dorm is full of good girls. You can't harm them; otherwise, we’re going to have a serious problem!"
I nodded and said, "Don't worry! You know I'm not that kind of person!"
Fei Fei looked me up and down, her expression meaningful as she replied, "That's not good!"
I had just completed my first business deal and originally planned to take Fei Fei out to eat. However, this girl was considerate; knowing I was still deep in debt, she insisted we save money wherever possible.
So, we cooked at home! Of course, I was just helping out; the main work was still done by Fei Fei.
"That's great! You should go back and tell your roommates that your brother is planning to treat them to a meal as a thank you for taking care of my sister!" I said while eating, worried she might forget.
Fei Fei replied impatiently, " Ling Feng, why do I feel like you've changed? Are you going to keep nagging forever?"
Ruo Yu chimed in during a lull, "He's probably gone crazy thinking about his girlfriend!"
Fei Fei couldn't hold it in and burst out laughing, spraying rice everywhere. She gave Ruo Yu a thumbs up and praised, "Ruo Yu, you're really sharp with your words! You’re surprisingly impressive when you finally speak up!"
I sulked as I took a few bites of rice, thinking that Ruo Yu, who usually looked dazed, could actually be quite chatty at crucial moments.
When Fei Fei was about to leave, I handed her a talisman. It was made with my own blood drawn from my middle finger. While it wasn't particularly powerful, it could at least help ward off some negative energy. Girls generally have a more yin constitution, so having a talisman for protection was beneficial.
Fei Fei examined the talisman from all angles and asked, " Ling Feng, why are you giving me this thing that looks like a child's drawing?"
I rubbed my forehead and replied, "Come on, have some common sense! This is a Qiu Yin Fu personally drawn by me. Most people wouldn't even be able to get one!"
Fei Fei laughed and said, " Ling Feng, I think you really should get married. If this goes on much longer, you're going to lose your mind. Haven't you heard that schools are filled with pure righteous energy? It's just like the police station—places where ghosts dare not tread!"
She then shoved the talisman back into my hand. I added, "That may be true, but it's better to be prepared. It doesn't take up much space anyway. Keeping it will give me peace of mind!"
Fei Fei reluctantly accepted the talisman again and said, " Ling Feng, I feel like now that you've started being a boss, this occupational hazard is showing. Being suspicious isn't your style."
Upon receiving her acceptance, I brushed off her playful remarks. "Fei Fei, remember to call me if anything comes up! You know the office number; you can call at any hour!"
After sending Fei Fei off, Ruo Yu asked, "Ling Feng, why did you draw talismans for Fei Fei out of the blue?"
I shot him a glance. "Didn't you feel the heavy yin energy around Fei Fei?"
Ruo Yu shook his head. I was even more puzzled; Ruo Yu used to be quite sensitive to such things. Had he regressed?
Or had I evolved?
After some contemplation, I decided to conduct an experiment with the injured Xuan. The results confirmed that my senses had indeed sharpened a bit.
"Since you've noticed it, why let Fei Fei go back? Aren't you worried she might run into trouble? You should have told her directly so she could be on guard!" Ruo Yu scolded me.
I replied, "Fei Fei is a girl after all; she might get scared over nothing if she thinks too much!"
Ruo Yu nodded in understanding. "Oh, I see." I continued, "Besides, we’re going to her school tomorrow. What's one more night?"
Ding ling ling...
Ding ling ling...
The urgent ringing of the phone pierced through the silence of the night like a haunting call. It was especially jarring in the stillness.
I rarely got a good night's sleep, and just as I was about to achieve something great in my dreams, I was abruptly interrupted. Frustrated and with nowhere to vent my anger, I picked up the phone with a less-than-friendly tone, launching into a tirade. "Hello? Who is this? Disturbing my dreams at this hour is really inconsiderate!"
There was no response on the other end, just a faint sound of crying.
I muttered a curse under my breath, thinking it was just another prank call and almost hung up when a voice came through, laced with tears. " Ling Feng!"
I jolted awake, instantly shaking off any remnants of sleep, and asked in a low voice, “Fei Fei, don’t be afraid! With Ling Feng here, nothing will happen to you!”
“Qiao Qiao, she’s dead!” Fei Fei cried on the other end of the line, her voice hoarse and desperate. My heart leapt into my throat. As I hurriedly got dressed, I said, “Fei Fei, find a safe place with more people around. I’ll be there right away. Don’t be scared!”
Fei Fei sobbed, “ Ling Feng, please hurry! I’m scared!”
After hanging up the phone, I shouted towards Ruo Yu’s room. Ruo Yu responded quickly, rushing out in her clothes. “What happened?”
I nodded and said, “Something happened to Fei Fei!”
Even though it was May, the temperature in the early hours of the morning was still quite low. The wind blew, sending chills down my spine.
As I got into the taxi, I noticed the time on the dashboard: 4:44 AM.
