I initially thought Solemn would be someone who slacks off, but it turned out I was mistaken; his drive was more vigorous than anyone else's. His proactive attitude genuinely impressed me. 0

Even without the sound of a horn, most vehicles on the road were courteous enough to yield. By the time we arrived and the car came to a steady stop at the entrance, it had only taken a few minutes. 0

I poured a glass of water for Solemn and let him explore at his leisure while I busied myself with some tasks. 0

There wasn't much to do, really; I just checked the house and gathered some necessary items. The whole process took about half an hour. 0

When I finished tidying up and went downstairs, I found Solemn bent over, examining the Lucky Cat that was sitting on the table. 0

It seemed that the police officer, with his sense of justice, was too intimidated to speak up, allowing Solemn to scrutinize the item freely. 0

“What’s the story behind this thing? It looks rather eerie to me,” Solemn asked meaningfully. 0

I reached over and picked up the Lucky Cat. “You know what? You actually have a good eye. Out of all the things in this room, this one has a bit of spirit. I don’t know its specifics; it was given to me by someone else, and I just kindly took it in!” 0

Solemn didn’t dwell on it and shrugged at me. “Is this house yours? It’s nicely decorated! But isn’t it your first time seeing someone from the Special Investigation Bureau running their own business? Aren’t you afraid of getting penalized? Or do you think the Special Investigation Bureau can’t meet your daily needs? Is it about money or personal satisfaction?” 0

As he drove, Solemn curiously asked these questions. 0

I replied honestly, “First of all, I’m not part of the Special Investigation Bureau! So I can’t answer those questions. I’ve gotten used to being free-spirited; I can’t stand institutional constraints, so I decided to run my own little business for some freedom!” 0

Solemn chuckled, “I wouldn’t have guessed you’d have such awareness at your age. Do you know how hard it is to get into the Special Investigation Bureau? So many people envy that position… but here you are…” 0

I rested my hands behind my head and replied, “Arsenic and honey—only those who use them know which is which. Life is short; being happy is what matters most!” 0

Solemn smiled silently. I then asked him, “How many people do you plan to bring along?” 0

Solemn gave a wry smile. “Can’t you see today’s situation? I don’t have the authority to mobilize many people. If it weren’t for my lingering desire from when I attended police academy, who would want to take on such a tough job?” 0

I understood Solemn’s helplessness and admired his actions; he hadn’t been swayed by the larger environment and chose to act according to his conscience. If everyone could be as upright as he was, how many cases would remain unsolved? 0

I replied, "It's not about the number of people but their quality. If we bring too many, we'll inevitably alert the enemy. If a bunch of cars rolls into the village, by the time they arrive, those people will have already gotten wind of it and fled!" 0

Solemn glanced at me and said, "You're right. So what do you plan to do?" 0

I pointed at myself, then at Ruo Yu, and finally at Solemn. 0

Solemn looked surprised and responded, "Just the three of us? You really are bold!" 0

I shrugged my shoulders and said, "Why shouldn't I be?" 0

Solemn slapped the steering wheel and declared, "I like your style!" 0

I laughed and replied, "My orientation is perfectly normal!" 0

"Get lost!" Solemn cursed. 0

We drove down to the county town below, found a hotel near the bus station to spend the night, and planned to catch the earliest bus in the morning. 0

For dinner, we settled for some barbecue nearby. Solemn, who wasn't much older than me, started talking more after a few drinks. 0

He became quite the chatterbox as he shared various experiences since becoming a police officer. 0

Later that night, wanting some peace and quiet, I arranged for Ruo Yu and Solemn to share a double room while I took a single room for myself. 0

After closing the door, I took out Lucky Cat. Xuan floated out from it, curiously surveying the surroundings. 0

I pulled out Zhang Ningning's spotted dog doll and said, "Xuan, remember the scent on this doll. Tomorrow, can you help me find someone?" 0

Xuan seemed hyperactive as it floated around the room, checking this and that without a moment's pause. Just when I was about to lose my patience, Xuan finally sensed my frustration and obediently stopped in front of me. "Okay! I got it! I'll help you find someone—a pretty sister. Will she play with me?" 0

I nodded and said, "As long as Xuan behaves and listens, Sister will naturally play with you!" 0

After finally clarifying everything, I offered incense to Xuan and then collapsed onto the bed. Communicating with a child was somehow more exhausting than getting into a fight with someone. The key issue was the emotional fatigue! 0

At dawn, we got up and set off without even having breakfast. We quickly grabbed some buns and soy milk from a nearby Baozi Shop and hurried to the bus station. 0

The earliest bus that connected the villages left at six o'clock. Although it was early, we were surprised to find quite a few people crammed into the old minibus once we boarded. 0

The three of us found seats at the back of the bus. Ruo Yu, probably starving, was nearly ready to devour the moment I opened the plastic bag containing the buns. 0

Despite its small size, the Baozi Shop made some delicious buns. I took a big bite, fearing that if I ate slowly, all the food would end up in Ruo Yu's stomach. 0

Crunch... 0

Oh no! Could I really be this unlucky? My teeth felt like they were about to be shattered. There was no trash can on the bus. 0

I quickly snatched the empty plastic bag from Ruo Yu's hands and spat out what I had chewed. 0

Chewed-up buns were certainly not a pretty sight—just a messy lump. But my curiosity got the better of me, and I picked up the culprit that had nearly knocked my teeth out. 0

Seeing it made me lose my composure completely; I opened the window and started to throw up. 0

I didn’t even have time to apologize to the cleaning aunties and uncles. I truly didn’t mean to! 0

Solemn laughed, "Ling Feng, what kind of physical condition do you have? The bus has barely started moving, and you're already car sick like this." 0

I had no response; I raised my hand behind me, causing Solemn's words to trail off. He then leaned over onto me and poked his head out, only to vomit as well. 0

The ticket seller saw both of us leaning out to throw up and quickly asked the driver to pull over. Once we finished throwing up, we were back on our way! 0

As I could no longer bring anything up from my stomach and had rinsed my mouth with mineral water numerous times, I finally started to feel a bit better alongside Solemn. 0

I still held onto the object I had found in the bun. 0

Solemn and I exchanged a glance, and it was clear that we both recognized what it was—it was a human fingernail! 0

Solemn's expression was grave. "Ling Feng, do you think it’s possible that you misunderstood? Perhaps the boss accidentally cut his hand while chopping the filling for the buns?" 0

There was indeed a possibility in what he said. Holding onto a glimmer of hope, we opened the remaining buns one by one and began to inspect them closely. 0

Unfortunately, we discovered several more broken nails! 0

This Baozi Shop had serious issues! 0
