Humans are truly clever; they invented something as remarkable as an airplane. In just a couple of hours, we had already landed.
The airport in Y City is quite far from the city center, but fortunately, there’s an airport shuttle that goes directly to the bus station.
By the time we arrived at the bus station, it was already noon. Ruo Yu and I grabbed a quick bite at a nearby restaurant and bought some gifts.
It was midday, and I didn’t see Zhou Shu selling Shaobing. I wondered if Zhou Shu had thrown away my Sleeping Bag after I had been gone for a few months!
There were only two buses to the town: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. If you missed it, you would have to wait until the next morning.
Eager to get home, I didn’t bother renewing my rental; I just hopped on the bus back!
“Ling Feng, is it appropriate for me to go back with you?” Ruo Yu asked gruffly.
I replied, puzzled, “What’s inappropriate about it? Besides, I won’t be staying long. There’s a ton of things waiting for me in the city!”
The bus swayed gently, and by the time I opened my eyes again, we had arrived in town. From there, it was still nearly ten kilometers to our village.
As Ruo Yu and I walked back along the narrow road, we kept to the side since it wasn’t wide. However, cars behind us kept honking incessantly, and the noise made me furious.
What’s so great about having a car? Just wait until I make some money and buy two luxury cars to drive around!
Just as I was about to blow up in anger, a sedan pulled up beside me. When the window slowly rolled down, I couldn’t help but smile!
Luck really does come when you least expect it; I had run into an old acquaintance.
I quickly urged Ruo Yu to get into the car and took my seat in the passenger side without hesitation.
If we had to walk back, we’d probably arrive after dark. With this ride, things became much easier.
“Tao Ge, you busy man, how come you have time to come back to the village?” I joked with a smile.
Shen Tao exclaimed happily, “Ling Feng! I almost didn’t recognize you from behind. I kept honking until I got close—wow, it really is you! You’re not…”
I replied, "It's a long story. Just think of it as me going on a trip. How's everything at home? How is Young Master Jiang's condition? Has that Miss Miao come by again?"
Shen Tao responded, "Everything at home is fine, so don't worry! Young Master Jiang is still the same, in a deep coma. Miss Miao came by once; it seemed she was looking for you, but when she saw you weren't there, she left! What did you do to offend her?"
I answered, "Clearly, she offended me first! Oh, by the way, this is my brother here, named Ruo Yu!"
"Ruo Yu, this is Tao Ge, Shen Tao!"
Shen Tao tilted his head and said hello, while Ruo Yu nodded in acknowledgment.
Having a car is really convenient. In no time, we arrived at the village entrance. Before getting out, I asked, "Tao Ge, if you're not leaving tonight, come over to my place for a couple of drinks. I have something to discuss with you."
Shen Tao made a 'K' gesture towards me.
As soon as I got out of the car, a figure jumped onto me, wrapping its arms around my neck and then leaping onto my shoulder, chattering incessantly.
I was quite disturbed by Fo Zhang's antics; I was also sensitive to tickling. Eventually, I had to speak up to stop Fo Zhang.
Only then did Fo Zhang obediently squat on my shoulder and continue chattering.
I patted the little creature's head and offered it some fruit to calm it down; finally, Fo Zhang settled down a bit.
Ruo Yu's eyes were wide open like saucers as he watched Fo Zhang, showing a hint of wariness.
"Ruo Yu, this is my pet Fo Zhang! Come on and touch it! Our Fo Zhang is very well-behaved," I said proudly.
Ruo Yu reached out his hand to pet Fo Zhang, but before he could get close, Fo Zhang bared its teeth at him, clearly unwilling to be touched.
Ruo Yu quickly withdrew his hand. I gently patted Fo Zhang's head and said, "Remember, from now on this is family. We're brothers now; understand? You can't be so rude!"
Fo Zhang nodded and then jumped directly onto Ruo Yu's head to perch there.
Ruo Yu smiled helplessly at me, as if to say, "Is this your incredibly obedient monkey?"
Standing at the door of my home after several months, I was suddenly overwhelmed with a myriad of emotions.
This time was different from my previous visits to the Immortal Cave. After several brushes with death, returning home brought a complex mix of feelings.
"I just saw this monkey dash out; it must mean you're back. Come on in! What are you doing outside?" My father called from inside, busy with something.
Looking up, I saw Ruo Yu standing behind me and quickly welcomed him. "Ling Feng, you could have let me know you were bringing a friend back so I could prepare."
My father seemed a bit flustered. I replied, "Dad, this is my brother Ruo Yu; he’s like family. No need for special preparations."
Ruo Yu respectfully called out, "Uncle," and handed over what he had brought. My father hurriedly accepted it. "If you're coming over, just come! No need to bring anything."
Then he turned to me and said, "Ling Feng, hurry and invite Ruo Yu inside. I’ll get dinner ready; let’s have a drink tonight!"
Though my father didn’t say it outright, I could tell he was happy that I was back.
Ruo Yu remarked, "Your dad is so welcoming!"
I laughed and said, "You'll find my dad's cooking even more welcoming."
It wasn’t a holiday or festival, and the others weren’t home.
While waiting for dinner to be ready, I asked Fo Zhang, "What about Buddha Sound? Has he come back recently?"
Fo Zhang gestured at the table; from what I could gather, Buddha Sound had put on some weight again. He had been spending all his time in the mountains without coming home.
As the light gradually dimmed outside, my father managed to whip up a full spread despite not having many ingredients.
I sent Fo Zhang to fetch Shen Tao for dinner. Shen Tao had been here before and soon returned with him in tow.
After a few glasses of strong liquor, my father became more talkative. “Ling Feng, have you seen your master? When he came to the house looking for you, I knew you would be fine, but he didn’t believe it and went off to find you. Thankfully, your master is capable; if it were me, once I left the village, I wouldn’t know where to look for you.”
His words filled me with a sense of guilt. I realized that I needed to start making money from this business quickly. The first thing I would do with my earnings is to install a telephone at home!
Fo Zhang squatted by the table with a bowl in front of him, and I occasionally fed him some food.
My father couldn’t hold his liquor well and passed out after just a few drinks. After helping him back to his room, I returned to the dining area where the atmosphere at the table was gradually becoming lively again.
“Tao Ge, if I can wake up Jiang Family Young Master, how much will Boss Jiang pay me? You need to help me negotiate this. Also, since you’re familiar with the city, keep an eye out for a storefront for rent. Ideally, it should be a two-story place, and the cheaper, the better! As for the location, just something decent will do,” I said as I clinked glasses with Shen Tao.
Shen Tao burped and replied, “Ling Feng, don’t worry. Leave this matter to me. Your Tao Ge may not have many skills, but handling this is a piece of cake.”
The drinking session lasted until nearly ten o’clock before we finally dispersed.
Lying in a room that wasn’t too familiar to me—after all these years, I had spent very little time at home—but my heart felt incredibly at peace.
