On the way back, I curiously asked, “Old Man, are you really going to confront the Azure Bat King? What are your chances of winning?”
The Old Man pondered for a moment and replied, “To be honest, I’m not sure. From what I saw of his methods against the giant serpent, it’s hard to gauge.”
After a while, we had lunch, and just as the sky was clear, dark clouds suddenly rolled in, turning the atmosphere gloomy as if it were evening.
A fierce wind swept through, bending trees this way and that; some were even uprooted entirely.
Occasionally, thunder rumbled from afar, and bolts of lightning shot out from the thick black clouds.
Having had a bit to drink at noon, the Old Man was dozing off with his eyes half-closed. The sudden roar of wind and thunder startled him awake, and he grumbled, “Wasn’t the weather forecast supposed to be clear today? What’s going on? Is this a rebellion?”
Whenever there was movement outside, I would rush out to take a look. The dark clouds were rapidly moving toward the reservoir with the force of the wind.
I dashed back inside and said, “Old Man, things don’t look good!”
The Old Man sprang to his feet. The black clouds resembled a massive vortex descending from the sky. Silver lightning crackled amidst the thunder.
A gigantic serpent, dozens of meters long, soared into the air, heading straight for the heart of the storm.
The Old Man addressed everyone, “Brothers, the decisive moment has arrived.”
With a sweeping gesture, he led everyone toward the edge of the reservoir.
Before we could get close to the reservoir, we were halted by an invisible barrier; the closer we got, the stronger the wind became, making it difficult to keep our eyes open.
Not to mention the chaos of thunder and lightning!
The wind over the reservoir was likely more than ten on the Beaufort scale. The once calm surface of the water was whipped into long waves that resembled a dragon drinking from a river.
The massive body of the giant serpent pierced through the dark clouds, arcs of electricity crackling all around.
“Isn’t this just terrifying?” I exclaimed, witnessing such a scene for the first time; it felt like the end of the world.
Is this what tribulation looks like? Its might was truly intimidating. I couldn’t help but marvel at the power of nature.
The Old Man leaned closer to my ear and shouted, “This creature seeks to cultivate, but it is going against the natural order. It’s far more difficult than human cultivation.”
I couldn’t help but gasp in astonishment. The Old Man continued, “It’s unlikely to stop anytime soon.”
“What if the giant serpent succeeds in its tribulation?” I countered.
The Old Man glared at me and said, “What else can we do? We run! Are we just going to wait around to be eaten? Though, it’s not that dire. Regardless of whether the giant serpent succeeds or fails, there will be a period of weakness afterward. As long as we can take it down during that time, we’ll be fine!”
Thunder rumbled…
Crack… crack…
Lightning mixed with thunder struck the giant serpent, its body twisting in apparent agony.
The serpent opened its mouth wide, forming an arc of at least ten degrees. A glowing orb shot out from its mouth.
The orb emitted a gentle light, showing no signs of being suppressed by the intense brightness of the lightning. As soon as it emerged, the giant serpent seemed to weaken significantly, retreating under the protection of the orb.
The orb spun continuously, its light growing increasingly blinding.
“Is this the Jiao Zhu?” I asked.
The Old Man nodded, "This is the Jiao Zhu, a culmination of the giant serpent's essence gathered over many years. Whoever can obtain this Jiao Zhu has the chance to become a being like the Land Immortal."
After another violent clash of thunder and lightning, the glow of the Jiao Zhu dimmed, and the giant serpent's body swayed precariously, as if it would fall at any moment.
I exclaimed, "Old Man, the power of the lightning has changed; it seems the dark clouds are also dispersing."
The fierce wind gradually ceased, and the dark clouds appeared to be pushed aside by an invisible hand, revealing sunlight.
The giant serpent slightly opened its mouth, attempting to swallow the Jiao Zhu back into its belly. However, an arrow shot through the clouds swiftly aimed for the sky.
With a thud!
The Jiao Zhu was deflected like a bouncing ball and fell into the water.
The massive head of the serpent suddenly turned towards the archer, its blood-red eyes filled with resentment.
It opened its mouth and unleashed a barrage of water arrows directed at the crowd.
The archer was none other than the Poison Scorpion Master. Having lost his inner core, the giant serpent had become increasingly irritable and swept its enormous tail towards everyone.
Wherever it passed, not only people but even trees as thick as several men’s arms were uprooted.
Seeing the Evil Spirit Cult suffer from the serpent's attack, we naturally found it quite satisfying.
It was indeed true that evil begets evil! It was not that retribution had not come; it was simply not yet time.
However, this good fortune did not last long. Suddenly, two figures flew swiftly towards us.
An Old Man cursed under his breath and charged directly towards the Azure Bat King, determined to intercept the two and buy some time for those behind him.
"Han Che, get everyone to retreat quickly!" he shouted.
The giant serpent seemed to have gone mad, its massive tail sweeping wildly as it unleashed water arrows from its mouth in a chaotic barrage.
As the culprit who had knocked its inner core into the water attempted to escape, the serpent's indiscriminate attacks followed suit.
An Old Man gritted his teeth in anger, "You treacherous scoundrel! If I don’t break your leg today, I swear I won’t bear the surname An!"
What had started as a two-on-two confrontation quickly turned into a four-on-one struggle due to the serpent's indiscriminate aggression.
The Azure Bat King laughed, "An Old Man, you think I don't see through your little schemes? There's no way I'm going to let you benefit from this comfortably."
An Old Man retorted angrily, "This Jiao Zhu belongs to the state. It’s not something you can touch! If any harm comes to my Special Investigation Bureau personnel, I will not rest until I settle this with you."
Although the giant serpent had lost the Jiao Zhu, its sheer size still gave it an advantage. Even in a four-on-one situation, it remained formidable.
Upon receiving the order, Han Che immediately organized a retreat. Fortunately, the personnel from the Special Investigation Bureau were well-trained and quickly distanced themselves to safety. To be cautious, Han Che ordered them to retreat even further.
I didn’t follow the retreat; I wanted to retrieve my Peach Wood Sword and also witness the clash of experts firsthand. It would be good enough just to watch!
Seeing that I wasn’t leaving, Han Che didn’t try to persuade me and turned away with his team.
I hid behind a tree, observing the battlefield. Indeed, experts were experts; every movement they made exuded a profound elegance.
The Azure Bat King whistled and retreated with the Poison Scorpion Master, saying, “Old Man, this giant snake is up to you and the Special Investigation Bureau!”
The Old Man chuckled slyly and replied, “Trying to escape? It won’t be that easy. It’s only proper to return a favor!”
He chased after the Azure Bat King. The Azure Bat King, sensing danger, quickly turned and ran in the direction of Han Che.
This made the Old Man anxious, and he shouted, “Lao Wu, go get the Jiao Zhu! Leave this giant snake to me!”
As soon as the Old Man called out, the Azure Bat King froze in place. It then turned back to chase after Wu Lao.
Indeed, the Jiao Zhu held a deadly attraction for them.
The Old Man grinned widely, leading the giant snake toward the Azure Bat King.
