I leaned against the tree for a long time, trying to catch my breath, when suddenly a strong gust of wind swept towards me, carrying a pungent stench.
It was incredibly fast, like a bullet fired from a gun. Before I could even see what it was or react, I felt something tighten around my waist, as if I were being constricted by some unseen force.
I didn’t even have the chance to cry out for help before I was yanked into the air with tremendous force.
With a loud splash, I plunged into the water like a stone dropped from the sky.
The impact was immense, leaving me dazed. Yet, years of training kicked in, and I instinctively held my breath while my hands flailed desperately, searching for something to grab onto to steady myself against the rapid movement through the water.
Fortunately, being in water was different from being on land. If I had been on solid ground at that speed, my body would have been shattered into pieces.
At that moment, my entire body felt as if it were falling apart, but there was still a part of me urging me to save myself. My hands found the slippery object wrapped around my waist, its texture making me feel nauseous.
Holding my breath, I summoned the energy from my Dantian as the essence of Fo Xi coursed through my limbs. As my strength began to return, I reached into my Qiankun Bag and pulled out the Peach Wood Sword.
I recited an incantation and then thrust the sword forcefully into the slimy object.
The Peach Wood Sword had been struck by lightning and was particularly effective against mountain spirits and ghostly souls.
Moreover, being underwater added to its potency. However, due to its slippery nature, the sword failed to penetrate after several attempts. On my final try, I gathered all my strength and drove the Peach Wood Sword deep into it. Suddenly, I felt a whirlpool of energy spinning around me.
I was launched high into the air like a ball before crashing back down into the water.
As soon as I hit the surface again, I caught a whiff of something burnt mixed with a faint metallic scent of blood.
I thought to myself that this was bad; that creature, despite being injured, didn’t flee and seemed intent on seeking revenge against me.
I paddled desperately toward the shore, my arms moving mechanically, while my mind amusingly considered that at my current swimming speed, I could easily break records at the Olympics and create a legend!
As I continued to stroke, something suddenly thrust me into the air. I looked down.
Oh my goodness! What in the world is this massive thing?
A gigantic head with two lantern-like eyes glowed with a blood-red light.
This was a Snake Head! Gray mist billowed from its nostrils, appearing and disappearing.
And it was this Snake Head that had lifted me into the air.
As I rose higher and higher, I realized that if I fell from this height, I would surely meet my end. I desperately clung to the Snake Head.
Unfortunately, the serpent's body was too slippery for me to hold on. In a moment of panic, I had no choice but to wedge myself into one of its eyes to stabilize my position.
The eyes are incredibly vulnerable spots for both humans and animals. As soon as I applied pressure, the giant snake began to thrash about, its eye closing tightly.
I could only wrap my arms around the Snake Head as my body slid down like I was on a slide.
I couldn’t even wrap my arms fully around its girth. That’s how thick it was.
Just as I was sliding down rapidly, I suddenly noticed what appeared to be fish fins on either side of the middle section of the snake’s body.
I fixed my gaze on those enormous fins and then gripped them tightly. The immense inertia nearly threw me off.
The giant serpent seemed to be filled with immense rage, thrashing about violently. I could only close my eyes, grit my teeth, and cling to its massive fin. If I let go, I feared for my life.
Even after years of training, I couldn’t withstand such torment.
I felt my hands beginning to go numb; the sheer force had likely cut my palms against the fin.
The taste of my own blood mingled with the water. Just when I thought I could hold on no longer, the giant serpent finally calmed down, ceasing its tumultuous movements.
I could hear the chaotic voices of people on the shore, along with the sound of gunfire.
As a member of the Special Investigation Bureau, I knew that Lu Yao and the others were always armed when they went out.
With the support of firearms, it seemed the giant serpent understood it needed to retreat from danger and sank beneath the water.
Seizing the opportunity, I loosened my grip and slowly began to float back to the surface.
Just as I was about to break through, I caught a glimpse of the serpent’s outline.
The Peach Wood Sword was lodged at the edge of its mouth, crackling with electricity.
It appeared that it was this serpent's tongue that had pulled me underwater earlier.
As soon as I surfaced, I heard Ruo Yu shout and then leap into the water.
Knowing Ruo Yu was swimming toward me made me feel a wave of relief wash over me.
When I awoke again, I found myself lying in a hospital room at a rehabilitation center.
Ruo Yu was dozing off beside me, and just as I was about to get up, I felt pain all over my body with the slightest movement.
"Why are you moving around when you're like this?" Ruo Yu said.
I winced and asked, "What's the situation now?"
Ruo Yu shrugged. "Lu Yao reported this to the higher-ups, and the Special Investigation Bureau is taking this matter very seriously. They've sent a big shot over from above. The nearby villagers have also been temporarily evacuated. You can rest easy and focus on recovering now."
I obediently lay back down. Ruo Yu continued, "Ling Feng, you really are something else. You've broken so many ribs, dislocated joints, and suffered a concussion, yet you're still okay. Why did you have to push yourself so hard?"
I forced a smile and replied, "In that situation, if I had let go, I would have been dead by now."
"Do you know what that thing was?" I asked.
Ruo Yu's eyes widened. "They say it's a Jiao that's about to transform."
I couldn't help but gasp. A Jiao is said to be a serpent that has cultivated for a thousand years to achieve transformation. Once it succeeds, it becomes a Land Immortal. There are only a handful of big shots in the world who could contend with such a being.
If the Jiao were to cultivate for another thousand years, it could transform into a dragon and ascend to the celestial realm.
"So that means this giant snake is about to transform into a Jiao!" I thought to myself, relieved that if we had arrived any later, we might have faced dire consequences.
Fortunately, the giant snake was currently in a weakened state before its transformation; otherwise, my life would have been in jeopardy.
Ruo Yu then said mysteriously, "The higher-ups are particularly concerned about this matter. They've already secured the reservoir area. No one is allowed to approach."
I immediately became intrigued. "Why is that?"
Ruo Yu paused for a moment, taking a sip of tea to build suspense before continuing, "I’ve heard that within the Jiao lies the essence of one's cultivation. For cultivators and beasts alike, it is a tremendous boon. You..."
Since ancient times, wealth has stirred the hearts of men, and for practitioners, nothing is more tempting than the prospect of advancing their cultivation.
Such a significant opportunity suggests that the Meishan Reservoir will be bustling with activity in the near future.
Although I felt a twinge of desire, I was self-aware enough to recognize that, given my current condition, such treasures were beyond my reach.
I decided to stay put and focus on my recovery; after all, teasing the nurses was quite enjoyable.
As for matters outside, the Special Investigation Bureau would handle them. My priority was to heal properly, collect my ticket and rewards, and return home in good time.
