I could tell that the man was very attached to the backpack; whatever was inside it seemed crucial to him. I thought that as long as he had the backpack, he would come back no matter how far he ran. So, I remained calm and smiled, saying, "I have quite an appetite; this little bit is just an appetizer."
Out of the corner of my eye, I glanced at the backpack, and sure enough, the man's expression immediately tightened. He forced a smile and said, "Common saying: Leave a line for others; we may meet again in the future. There's no need to be so ruthless, brother."
I snorted coldly and replied, "It's not that we can't negotiate. Just tell me honestly how you collaborated with it, and I'll let you go."
"Really?" The man's brows furrowed as he asked.
Seeing me nod, he relaxed his grip and sat down on the threshold. He pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and as he exhaled smoke in slow curls, he began to speak. "I just take a few things and do some work. The main part is really it."
He pointed to the clay statue behind him. I was surprised and asked, "Wong Tai Sin?"
The man took a deep drag from his cigarette and blew out a perfect smoke ring before continuing, "Those people come to worship Wong Tai Sin. Wong Tai Sin writes down what I need to do on paper. It only needs incense offerings; all the money and jewelry go to me."
I was secretly astonished; Wong Tai Sin was quite clever to think of such a scheme. As long as the reputation spread, offerings would keep coming in. Once it entered a virtuous cycle, wouldn't that be incredibly profitable?
"Do you fulfill everyone's wishes?" I asked curiously. After all, there were likely thousands of people seeking wishes; even if there were only a hundred or so at a time, how could one person manage all that in a month?
The man flicked his cigarette butt to the ground and crushed it under his shoe. "Pfft! There's no such good fortune. We prioritize those who contribute more; the rest don't matter... In this world, as long as you have a name among the wealthy, you don't have to worry about running out of offerings. Just recently, a real estate tycoon wanted to renovate this Zhaoguan; I heard he even wanted to make a golden statue of Wong Tai Sin..."
I cursed silently; indeed, money talks.
Then I felt something was off. If that were true, what about Tian Tian's Home? Could someone be harming them?
"Are you the only one collaborating with it?" I asked again.
The man looked at me suspiciously. "Are you trying to get involved too?"
His reaction didn't seem like a lie, so I decided to get straight to the point. "Then what about Dawn District? What happened at Building 0? How did an entire family suddenly fall victim to Mao Fa Jiang after just one visit from Zhaoguan?"
I grabbed the man's collar and lifted him up. "Don't tell me you don't know. If you're not telling the truth, I'll let you experience what Mao Fa Jiang feels like."
Fear flashed across his face as he begged repeatedly, "It wasn't me! It wasn't me! Really, it wasn't me..."
I shouted angrily, "You can deceive others, but you can't deceive me. Besides possessing the ability to possess, what does Wong Tai Sin know about Xiang Tou Shu? If it's not you, then who is it?"
The person hurriedly explained, "This Zhaoguan doesn't belong to my family; anyone can come here. A few days ago, I saw someone who was quite strange. He didn't want any money or jewels thrown on the ground; he specifically picked up hair, nails, and scraps of paper."
My heart sank. Could it be him? I quickly asked, "What did that person look like?"
After thinking for a moment, he replied, "Ugly, very ugly, extremely ugly."
He continued, "His eyes looked like he wanted to eat people. He was very fierce. Every time I saw him, I kept my distance."
"Is that person of medium build, with a slightly crooked mouth and big eyes?" I pressed.
He nodded vigorously. "Yes, yes! Just like you described—so ugly that it's unforgettable after just one glance..."
I released him; it was indeed him. That perverted Xiang Tou Shi, Sang Ji!
I then recalled the boy who died in front of me and the task he entrusted to me before his death. I had been so busy with everything else that I almost forgot.
The wooden monkey was still lying in the Qiankun Bag. I thought it would be better to wait until this matter was resolved before taking it to Maojia Village.
"When does he usually come? Is there a pattern?" I gritted my teeth and asked.
The man shook his head. "I don't know the specifics; he probably comes when no one else is around, just like me..."
I asked again, "When does Wong Tai Sin come?"
He looked dejected and said, "How would I know? Huang Daxian is elusive; I have no right to see him! But every time I come and talk to that clay statue, Huang Daxian can hear me and gives me instructions."
I exchanged a glance with Ruo Yu, who walked into the temple to inspect carefully.
Suddenly, a loud crash made my heart skip a beat. Not good; Ruo Yu was still inside.
I couldn't care less about anything else and rushed inside, covering my nose. The stench was unbearable, truly foul—an eye-watering odor.
"Ruo Yu, where are you?" The room was filled with a faint yellow mist.
"I'm fine." Although Ruo Yu's voice was unclear, at least it meant she was okay.
After we both stumbled out of the house, we leaned against a tree and began to retch.
It was just too disgusting. No wonder this weasel could survive in the wild; with a smell like that, even an elephant would be knocked out.
Ruo Yu recovered first, wiping her mouth as she asked, "What about that person?"
I turned back to look, but there was no sign of anyone at the threshold—thankfully, it was just a lackey. As long as we dealt with Wong Tai Sin, that guy wouldn't stir up any trouble.
Once the "toxic" fumes in the house dissipated, Ruo Yu and I had learned our lesson. We covered our mouths and noses with damp towels and confirmed everything was clear before entering again.
The clay statue that had been there before had collapsed, leaving shards of mud scattered everywhere. Ruo Yu's voice came through the towel, muffled yet clear, "There must be something suspicious beneath this statue."
We recalled the statue's position and began clearing away the debris. Fortunately, it wasn't too much. Once we finished cleaning up, we discovered a dark circular hole.
This must be Wong Tai Sin's lair.
Ruo Yu said, "A hole like this—unless we can transform ourselves, there's nothing we can do but watch."
I waved my hand confidently and replied, "Just watch me."
I pulled out some strong liquor from my Qiankun Bag and poured it into the hole before lighting it. A slender flame shot straight into the darkness.
Ruo Yu cheered, slapping her thigh. "Ling Feng, this fire attack is brilliant!"
This tactic was similar to pouring water; it worked well when hunting animals in the mountains—rabbits, hedgehogs—you name it. This method would surely be effective.
I turned to Ruo Yu and said, "Pay close attention to our surroundings."
As the saying goes, a cunning rabbit has three burrows; it's hard to guarantee that Wong Tai Sin wouldn't do the same. Sure enough, as the flames gradually extinguished, there was no sign of movement.
Wong Tai Sin must have escaped through another exit, I cursed under my breath.
"This vast land, where are we supposed to find this beast?" Ruo Yu sighed.
I replied with a single word: "Wait!"
A monk can escape, but not the temple. This Zhaoguan is the stronghold of Wong Tai Sin's Heart Sutra camp; it surely wouldn't give up so easily.
On another level, we naturally had to lie in wait for our prey.
