I watched as several people came to seek Wong Tai Sin, but I couldn't discern anything unusual.
Standing at the entrance of the temple was too conspicuous, so I pulled Ruo Yu and we slipped away into the woods on the back mountain.
Since there was no sign of anything odd during the day, we decided to wait until evening to take another look.
I pondered that although Ruo Yu had been enlightened by her grandmother and had gained some wisdom, it was possible that this Wong Tai Sin was merely a well-practiced weasel in disguise.
The sun was gentle, and Ruo Yu and I found a flat rock to lie on. As we basked in the sunlight, we chatted, and I shared my thoughts.
After a moment of contemplation, Ruo Yu asked pointedly, “But isn’t it clear that there’s some sort of hex on Tian Tian’s family? Could it be that this weasel fled from the country and chose to hide here because the feng shui is good?”
Ruo Yu's insight struck me. Since ancient times, folklore has mentioned five immortals: the fox, weasel, hedgehog, snake, and rat. The fox spirit naturally refers to foxes. There are numerous records in ancient texts, most of which are rather alluring tales. Bai Xian refers to hedgehogs, Liu Xian refers to snakes, and Gray Immortal refers to rats.
Among them, Huang Xian refers specifically to weasels. In many folk tales, Huang Xian is known for possessing individuals, often choosing women who are emotionally distressed or in extreme despair.
I had never heard of Wong Tai Sin actually employing Xiang Tou Shu!
“You make a good point. But Tian Tian’s family has no enemies; who would want to harm them so viciously?” I murmured to myself.
Ruo Yu looked at me and laughed, “You seem troubled. Could it be that you have taken a liking to that girl?”
I rolled my eyes. “Don’t drag me into your assumptions about being warm-hearted and helpful!”
Ruo Yu smiled ambiguously, clearly not believing me. I didn’t bother explaining further; honestly, I just felt pity for Tian Tian. She had suffered so much—abducted at a young age and locked away in a dark room enduring abuse. After finally reuniting with her family and having just a few peaceful days, she was struck by Mao Fa Jiang.
It truly made one sigh in lamentation over the unfairness of life. Some people commit heinous acts yet live comfortably without consequence, while others who lead honest lives suffer from misfortunes they don’t deserve.
Sigh…
I rested my hands behind my head and sighed deeply. “Let’s help whoever we can when we encounter them.”
Ruo Yu followed suit and said, “Ling Feng, I appreciate your sense of responsibility. There are countless people in this world; if we can lend a hand when needed, then we should.”
Fortunately, I am someone who likes to prepare in advance, so I had packed plenty of food, drink, and supplies in my Qiankun Bag.
Sitting on the ground, I engaged in lively conversation with Ruo Yu, and time flew by. Before I knew it, evening had arrived; the setting sun painted the clouds orange, and flocks of birds flapped their wings as they returned to their nests.
The moment was tranquil and beautiful.
Ruo Yu and I waited a little longer until dusk fell before we made our way back to Zhaoguan.
As we approached Zhaoguan, a strong, pungent scent of incense wafted toward us, causing me to sneeze uncontrollably several times.
“A Che… A Che…”
In the stillness of the mountain top, my sneezes echoed loudly.
Ruo Yu quickly covered my mouth with his hand and gestured for silence. I swatted his hand away. “There’s no one around; what’s there to be afraid of?”
Ruo Yu pointed toward Zhaoguan, and only then did I realize something was off.
There was actually light coming from inside the house? When we had come earlier, there hadn’t been any signs of anyone living there. Could it be that the clay statue had somehow lit the lamps by itself?
I signaled to Ruo Yu, indicating that we should flank the place. After all, it was such a small area; even if someone were trying to deceive us, as long as it wasn’t a Big Shot personally involved, Ruo Yu and I stood a good chance.
I crouched low and crept to the entrance of Zhaoguan, leaning against the wall beside the door. Indeed, there was someone inside. From this close distance, I could clearly hear their breathing. Although it was shallow, it was still audible to my ears.
However, the shallow breathing was prolonged, indicating that the person had some martial arts training.
“I’ve told you before that we should aim for a win-win situation. You refused to listen. Now you see the benefits, don’t you? You’ve got your incense offerings while I’ve got my wealth. Isn’t this a mutually beneficial arrangement?” The man’s voice was deep and resonant.
Accompanying his words were sounds that seemed like items being packed away.
I understood immediately; it was indeed a gang at work.
There was no response from within, only the man continued to mutter to himself, "Alright, write down everything I need to do this time so I can head down the mountain and prepare."
"Who? Who's out there?" The man suddenly shouted and rushed out.
Instinctively, I kicked out with my foot, aiming to take him by surprise.
I targeted the bend of his leg.
To my surprise, he reacted quickly, leaning to the side and performing a roll to evade my attack.
"Who are you?" he asked in a low voice.
I countered, "How did you notice me?" I was sure I had controlled my presence perfectly and wouldn’t be exposed.
He chuckled darkly. "You should know where this is. You’ve been here for a while, and Huang Daxian informed me of an unfamiliar presence. What? Aren't you going to call your companion out?"
As soon as he finished speaking, Ruo Yu circled around from behind and stood behind him.
With two against one, we had him surrounded.
I sneered, "Are you planning to surrender and confess? Or should we beat you half to death before you start talking?"
The man showed no fear. "Youngster, be careful; you might just trip over your own tongue."
Then he dashed towards me. As he stepped into the light, I finally got a good look at him—he was in his forties with shoulder-length greasy hair that reflected the light. His long face bore a pair of cunning phoenix eyes that glinted with mischief.
Seeing him charge at me, I instinctively sidestepped to avoid his attack. However, as we brushed past each other, I caught a glimpse of the mocking smile at the corner of his mouth.
Realizing I had fallen into a trap, I quickly reached out with one hand to grab his shoulder, intending to hold him back.
But he was incredibly fast; my grasp missed entirely and instead caught onto a strap on his shoulder.
I finally saw clearly that the person was carrying a backpack. Upon realizing this, I tightly grasped the strap without letting go.
The person did not slow down; with a loud snap, the strap broke. They stumbled slightly and turned to reclaim the backpack.
I had no intention of releasing my grip, employing the Great Shift Technique to chase after them. I lifted my leg and kicked, forcing them to retract their hand.
We stood facing each other, each holding onto one side of the backpack.
"Brother, we have no grievances in the past and none recently. How about we split the contents of this bag forty-sixty?" the person said with a grin.
I didn’t respond. The person extended their other hand and gestured, their expression as if they were negotiating through a barrier. "No way, I can't take a loss like that. How about fifty-fifty?"
I laughed and replied, "What if I want it all?"
The person widened their eyes and said, "Aren't you afraid of overindulging yourself?"
