After the cheers, silence fell once more. Looking at the blood-soaked ground and the severed limbs scattered about, both friend and foe alike, it resembled a hellish battlefield.
Following another brutal clash, everyone was exhausted. Yet no one sat down to rest; instead, they spontaneously began to retrieve the bodies of their fallen brothers, digging graves to bury them. They then marked the spots.
The war continued, and the corpses of comrades would have to wait until it was over before being brought back together.
If we survived, we would return together. Regardless of life or death, we would return together!
After a brief rest and some organization, we set off towards another battlefield. The light had dimmed, and as we moved through the mountains, our pace slowed. We focused more on our footing and the surroundings.
As we advanced cautiously, sudden hurried footsteps echoed ahead. Shadows flickered.
Han Che immediately raised his hand to signal us to stop, urging everyone to hide in the bushes. Without a sound, each person found cover; the entire process was seamless and orderly.
Having learned from past bloodshed, those who remained were all elite fighters.
A loud bang erupted, accompanied by a blinding flash that exploded in the dark night. Han Che rushed forward in surprise; those fleeing were comrades. Behind them trailed a group of men in black cloaks.
“What’s going on?” Han Che asked in confusion.
The Leader was a middle-aged man of average height, his clothes torn in several places with blood seeping through. “Are you blind? Run!”
With wide eyes, he pushed Han Che back. “Han Che, I order you to take your comrades and run—keep running until you reach a safe place.”
Even Han Che could piece together the situation; he clasped his hands in respect towards the Leader and waved his arm decisively. “Follow me!”
Some comrades turned away in tears, while others stood firm, reluctant to leave until Han Che nudged them along. Ruo Yu and I hid in the bushes for a moment, forgetting to follow because my heart felt heavy with sorrow.
The man before me was not tall nor particularly striking—he could easily blend into a crowd—but that very silhouette felt like a mountain to me; it exuded a profound weightiness.
"You clowns should stay in your own country instead of coming here to cause trouble. With me, Hu Zhiyong, around, let's see who can pass by me."
His voice was loud and full of authority.
Such a fearless and resolute person truly earned my respect. However, by the time I realized what was happening, I found that the figures in black robes had already surrounded us.
There were dozens of them, and leading the group were my old acquaintances, the Wasp King and that woman.
As soon as he finished speaking, Hu Zhiyong pushed forward with a palm strike. The first few black-robed men running ahead seemed to be struck by an invisible force, spitting blood and collapsing to the ground, unconscious.
The woman curled her lips into a cold smile and gestured behind her. Immediately, several black-clad individuals charged at Hu Zhiyong.
Once, twice, three times...
I could clearly feel that Hu Zhiyong's strength was waning. In the end, he could only rely on his bare hands to grapple with the black-robed men.
Hu Zhiyong's lips were pressed into a thin line, cracked and stained with bright red blood. His eyes reflected a resolute willingness to face death.
My heart sank; it seemed I had guessed correctly. Hu Zhiyong stood alone against the crowd of enemies to buy time for Han Che and others like him.
The woman frowned in displeasure. "A bunch of useless fools! You can't even take down an injured old man? What are you all doing? Get out of my way!"
With that, she stepped forward. Hu Zhiyong was already injured, and with her incredible speed, it only took a few exchanges for him to sustain several more wounds.
After a fierce exchange with the woman, Hu Zhiyong was forced back. He then drew a circle in the air with one hand while chanting an incantation. A fireball shot quickly toward the woman, who had yet to react.
The fireball surged forward menacingly; the woman's face turned pale with fear as she momentarily forgot to escape. Just as the fireball was about to strike her down, a pair of large hands caught it mid-air.
Then, slowly clenching his fist, the fireball in his hand extinguished.
Without any visible movement from the newcomer, he struck Hu Zhiyong in the chest with a palm. The already exhausted Hu Zhiyong flew away like a tattered sack.
Unfortunately, he landed right where I was hiding.
I had initially planned to catch Hu Zhiyong off guard and rescue him, but it was clear that I could no longer remain concealed. I reached out to catch Hu Zhiyong and staggered back several meters before finally stopping myself. "Senior, are you alright?"
Hearing my perfectly articulated words, Hu Zhiyong relaxed a bit and replied, "With a state like this, you still ask if I'm fine? Why don't you give it a try yourself?"
I couldn't help but chuckle; this Hu Zhiyong was truly an unusual person, able to joke and tease even in such dire circumstances surrounded by enemies.
"Weren't you supposed to escape? Why haven't you left?" Hu Zhiyong asked.
Before I could respond, the man who had sent Hu Zhiyong flying approached us. He was tall and slender, with long black hair cascading down his back, unmoving despite the absence of wind.
His appearance resembled that of a handsome scholar, but there was a chilling coldness etched on his face. Everyone lowered their heads respectfully, even the previously arrogant woman now bowed her head in deference.
Hu Zhiyong positioned himself protectively behind me and said, "Bai Mian Xiu Cai Shi Bu Er, am I correct?"
Perhaps due to his overly delicate features, I found Shi Bu Er somewhat unsettling; his every gesture seemed to lack the decisiveness typically associated with men.
"You have some knowledge, but now that you've fallen into my hands, none of you will escape. You will all die!"
His voice was calm and devoid of any inflection; even when he uttered the word "die," there was no hint of anger. Yet, I could see the icy killing intent in his eyes.
Unsure of who this Shi Bu Er was, I stiffened my neck and asked, "Who are you? Spouting such grandiose claims without fear of your tongue being blown away by the wind."
A slight smirk appeared at the corner of Shi Bu Er's mouth as he retorted, "And who might you be?"
I pushed Hu Zhiyong behind me and said loudly, "For the country, Ling Feng!"
Since there was no way to escape today, I might as well face death with dignity.
Shi Bu Er was taken aback. "Aren't you from the Special Investigation Bureau?"
"When a nation is in decline, every citizen bears responsibility. For a small country like ours to dare challenge the authority of our dynasty is truly like a mayfly shaking a tree; it deserves to be eradicated. As an ordinary citizen of this nation, I should naturally do my part." I replied, holding my head high, unafraid.
Shi Bu Er chuckled, "If that's the case, then take your pitiful loyalty with you and go die for your country!"
In an instant, he appeared before me like a ghost, reaching out with a palm strike. His speed was so fast that I could only see a fleeting shadow.
How did he do that?
