The woman sneered, "You can keep each other company on Huangquan Road."
Just as she was about to step forward, a deafening roar erupted from the northwest.
It sounded like a mountain being blasted apart, or like the muffled thunder of summer.
The sound made my heart sink. The Wasp King exclaimed, "It's started! It's started..."
His voice trembled with excitement, his pockmarked face scrunched up.
At that moment, Ruo Yu beside me suddenly murmured a few words, then transformed into her true form, carrying me swiftly into the dense forest.
The Wasp King, initially filled with excitement, saw us suddenly fleeing and immediately shouted to chase after us.
However, he was pulled back by that woman.
Seeing that no one was pursuing us from behind, the heavy weight in my heart finally lifted, and I let out a long sigh of relief.
Ruo Yu's speed was astonishing; I had to hunch down as the wind whistled past my ears and the trees and bushes rushed by us.
I felt my insides churning; this was nothing like the paper horse my master used to take me on—it was much more jarring.
Just when I thought my bones would fall apart, Ruo Yu and I tumbled to the ground. After a dizzying moment, I lay there and began to vomit.
Once I had expelled nearly all the bile in my stomach, I started to regain some clarity and noticed that Ruo Yu had already fainted beside me. It seemed she had exhausted all her energy in that moment.
I looked around and immediately lost my sense of direction, so I could only wait for Ruo Yu to wake up.
As I regulated my breathing, I remained vigilant of my surroundings. However, upon reflection, it was clear that while we had fled, that woman hadn’t pursued us; she was evidently more focused on the battle happening elsewhere. For someone like me and Ruo Yu—mere fish and shrimp—our escape wouldn’t affect the larger situation anyway.
Fortunately, it wasn't long before Ruo Yu woke up, though he looked extremely weak. His words came out faintly.
“Ruo Yu Brother, where are we? We haven't run too far, have we?” I asked, glancing around.
Ruo Yu replied, “I ran with a clear direction in mind; I won't be wrong about that.”
He sniffed the air and said, “Ling Feng, do you smell anything unusual?”
Curiously, I took a whiff and shook my head. “No, not at all…”
Ruo Yu continued, “I can smell a faint scent of blood.”
As a Wild Boar Spirit, Ruo Yu was naturally sensitive to the smell of blood. It was unlikely he was mistaken.
I pondered for a moment and asked, “Could it be that a fight has broken out?”
Ruo Yu nodded in agreement with my speculation.
“Ruo Yu Brother, you rest here while I go take a look. Since a fight has started, this place should be relatively safe…”
As a member of the nation, I felt compelled to help in such circumstances. If I didn't rush over to assist, what kind of National would I be?
“You're injured; going over there might not help at all,” Ruo Yu cautioned.
I replied firmly, “As a man in this world, there are things worth doing and things not worth doing. If I don't go, I'll regret it for the rest of my life.”
With great difficulty, Ruo Yu stood up. “Although I don’t fully understand your reasoning, if you’re going, then I’ll go too.”
I was deeply moved by Ruo Yu; this is what brotherhood means. Unconditional trust, fighting side by side without hesitation. Even in the face of bloodshed and danger, even with our wounds weighing us down.
For Ruo Yu, who had awakened his intelligence and lived in the deep mountains, he had encountered very few humans and certainly did not understand the complexities of national grievances.
All he had was his support for me, Ling Feng, and his unwavering trust.
I patted Ruo Yu on the shoulder. "Alright. Let's go take a look. Let those country monkeys see what our good lads from Our Country are made of..."
Ruo Yu followed the scent of blood in the air, leading the way. After climbing over a hill, we arrived at a hollow area.
The two sides engaged in battle numbered only a few dozen. On our side, all were dressed in black robes. Upon closer inspection, I noticed a significant disparity in strength; it seemed that there were indeed more black-robed figures.
On our side, I spotted a familiar face—Han Che from the Special Investigation Bureau. He was fiercely holding back the assault of the black-robed individuals with a few others.
With a sword in hand, Han Che exuded an aura that suggested he could single-handedly hold off an army. He stood against six or seven black-robed attackers. However, even with his prowess, it was difficult to change the tide of battle when outnumbered.
Aside from Han Che, the others were in dire straits, struggling to defend themselves.
While engaged in combat, Han Che shouted, "Hold on, brothers! Reinforcements are on their way!"
But these black-robed figures were not to be underestimated; they began to isolate several individuals, attempting to eliminate them one by one while slowly tightening their encirclement.
Seeing my comrades in such a desperate situation stirred my anger. I charged down without hesitation. Ruo Yu followed closely behind me to clean up and protect my rear. With my Ruyi Stick in hand, I descended like a fierce tiger off a mountain. The sound of my stick striking flesh echoed repeatedly.
This time, I unleashed all my fury—aiming for legs or arms, I struck with lethal intent to ensure these foes had no chance to retaliate.
Standing back to back with Ruo Yu, within moments we had already taken down several black-robed attackers.
As we rampaged through the battlefield, all eyes were drawn to us. Han Che exclaimed in surprise, "Brother, you're still alive!"
I chuckled, "These country monkeys could never kill me."
However, the black-clad assailants were numerous, and I didn't have time to chat with Han Che before being overwhelmed by a tide of attacks.
Clearly, after suffering losses at our hands earlier, the few who surrounded us now had the look and physique of seasoned fighters.
I took on a portion of the attackers, allowing Han Che to breathe a little easier. His sword danced like the wind, catching several others off guard.
Our previously solid plan was completely thrown into disarray with the arrival of me and Ruo Yu.
Now, our momentum surged like a roaring tide, while the black-robed figures seemed to lose their composure.
On one side was Han Che's Wuying Sword Technique, and on the other was my sweeping Ruyi Staff Technique.
The tide of battle had turned.
These black-robed individuals were clearly no strangers to bloodshed; they struck fiercely and some even resorted to desperate tactics, willing to take us down with them.
After this bloody skirmish, we had lost several of our own.
Yet compared to the near-total annihilation of the black-robed group, our victory was still quite impressive.
Han Che instructed the remaining brothers to secure the area and tend to the wounded before stepping up to me and patting my shoulder. "Thanks, brother!"
I smiled and replied, "We're all Nationals here; no need for pleasantries."
“That's true. But how did you end up here?” Han Che replied.
I briefly recounted what happened after I was captured and then asked, “Tian Tian, how is she?”
Han Che said, “She has already been sent home. However, she keeps mentioning you. She told me to make sure I personally deliver this letter to you once I find you…”
Han Che handed me the letter. I took it and tucked it into my pocket.
“Surviving a great disaster must bring good fortune…” Han Che exclaimed after hearing about my experiences, shaking his head in disbelief.
I inquired about the specific situation of the battle. As a representative of the country, Han Che couldn’t reveal too much, only that the Special Investigation Bureau had sent a Big Shot to oversee things…
If the enemy dared to cross the line, they would be dealt with mercilessly.
I couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief that my guess was correct. A Big Shot really did come? I just wondered who it could be.
