Delicious food lay before me, and I could hardly resist such temptation. Jiang Zong's eyes were mostly fixed on Fo Zhang. It was likely the first time he had seen such a spirited monkey.
Jiang Zong gestured for me to go ahead, saying, "Please, help yourself."
Upon hearing this, Fo Zhang wriggled out from under my grasp and eagerly began to gnaw on the elbow. Feeling a bit embarrassed, I said, "Fo Zhang has lived in the mountains and hasn't seen such a grand feast. I hope I haven't embarrassed you, Jiang Zong."
Jiang Zong waved his hand dismissively. "Not at all. Is it called Fo Zhang? This is the first time I've seen such a gluttonous monkey."
I nodded while eating. "Yes."
Jiang Zong intertwined his fingers and tapped them thoughtfully. "Ling Feng, right? Your pet seems quite impressive. Name your price."
He then turned to the butler beside him. "Once Hai recovers, this monkey would make the perfect gift for him. He would surely love it."
The butler chuckled in agreement. "Young Master has always loved animals..."
The two of them laughed together, completely oblivious to my serious demeanor as I slammed my chopsticks down on the table.
"Bang... bang..."
The echo of the European-style dome filled the room, and it fell silent instantly. All eyes turned to me, including Fo Zhang's, who sensed something was off. It dropped the elbow and scampered up to my shoulder, smearing grease all over my clothes before baring its teeth at Jiang Zong.
"Fo Zhang may just be a pet to you, but to me, it's family—priceless. I'm afraid I must disappoint you, Jiang Zong. As for Young Master Jiang's illness, perhaps you should seek someone more capable."
With that, I stood up and headed for the door.
Jiang Zong's voice remained calm, betraying no emotional fluctuations. "Aren't monks supposed to be compassionate? Would you really stand by and do nothing?"
I paused mid-step and replied, "Act according to one's heart. If Jiang Zong continues with this attitude, I'm afraid there's little I can do."
However, just as I opened the door, my body instinctively recoiled back into the room.
It wasn't that I had changed my mind; it was simply that outside stood a man in a black suit with sunglasses, holding a Type 9 pistol aimed directly at my forehead.
Even though I had some martial skills, I couldn't outrun a bullet. I raised my hands and asked, "Jiang Zong, what is the meaning of this?"
Jiang Zong waved at the man in the suit, and after he stepped back, Jiang Zong said, “I just want you to understand that young people should be more low-key. In the entire H City, there isn’t a single person who dares to stand against me, Jiang Jianguo.”
Shen Tao hadn’t expected the situation to escalate like this. He had never witnessed a scene where guns were drawn, and he trembled as he softly advised, “Ling Feng, don’t push it. A wise man doesn’t take unnecessary risks.”
I clenched my fists but eventually let them drop. If I acted recklessly and it led to trouble for Tao Ge or Fo Zhang, I would never find peace in my life. So I said coldly, “I can save the person, but I will not sell Fo Zhang. It can only go with you if it chooses to do so. Otherwise, even if it costs me my life, I will not betray it.”
Jiang Zong looked into my determined eyes and clapped his hands. “I, Jiang Jianguo, have always admired those who value loyalty. You’re not bad; I can agree to your terms regarding Fo Zhang.”
“Are you serious?” I asked in return, though doubt lingered in my heart. A businessman like Jiang Jianguo was notoriously cunning and had likely gone back on his word many times.
Jiang Jianguo laughed. “Don’t you know that in all of H City, I am known for my integrity? I never go back on my word.”
Under the guidance of the butler, I ascended to the second floor. Jiang Zong’s son, Jiang Hai, was lying quietly on the bed, breathing shallowly. His skin was pale, his cheeks flushed red, and his long eyelashes cast shadows over his closed eyes; his lips had taken on a pallid hue.
I first ensured that all doors and windows in the room were securely shut. Then, in a corner of the room, I lit an incense stick—not just any incense but one mixed with powdered rhinoceros horn called Rhinoceros Horn Incense. If there were any malevolent spirits present in this room, they would soon reveal themselves.
A thin wisp of smoke began to rise delicately. Everyone held their breath as they watched the tiny red ember on the incense stick. When the incense burned halfway down, the smoke that had been rising vertically suddenly swayed as if blown by a breeze and drifted toward the west.
Everyone in the room gasped except for me. Even Jiang Zong, who had previously appeared indifferent, furrowed his brow slightly; in such a sealed environment, it was strange for smoke to move without wind.
I placed my index finger to my lips in a gesture for silence.
After a while, a phantom appeared at Jiang Hai’s bedside—faint and indistinct. However, Jiang Zong’s face turned pale with terror as he pointed shakily toward the head of the bed and exclaimed, “Ya Qin…”
The old butler’s expression also shifted to one of fear as he took several steps back and hid behind Jiang Zong.
“Life and death are predetermined; why cling to a child? Depart at once,” I urged everyone toward the door before raising my obsidian prayer beads toward the ghostly figure and shouted.
Only then did the apparition lift its head to reveal a gentle face filled with confusion. Upon realizing that I could see her, her eyes filled with a pleading expression.
Her sorrowful demeanor tugged at my heartstrings. I put away the prayer beads and said, “Since you are dead, why not reincarnate? Why torment a child like this? Are you not afraid of karmic retribution leading you to suffer in hell?”
“Ya Qin, is that you?” Jiang Zong pushed through the crowd and stepped forward to ask.
The ghostly figure, upon seeing Jiang Jianguo, revealed a fierce expression. The previously elusive Phantom became solid, its long hair billowing behind it, and its eyes filled with a blood-red hue.
The atmosphere in the room suddenly thickened with hostility, and the curtains that had been drawn were blown about wildly by the force of the air.
I sensed danger and quickly threw out my obsidian bracelet while reciting the Six Character Mantra. Then, I pushed the stunned Jiang Jianguo out the door, closed it behind him, and affixed a Talisman to prevent this ghost named Ya Qin from going out to harm anyone.
To my surprise, once Jiang Jianguo left, the room that had been filled with resentment gradually returned to calm. The female ghost sat back down by the bed, gently stroking Jiang Hai's head. Although her transparent hand merely passed through him each time and could not physically touch him.
I was puzzled; it was clear that this female ghost knew Jiang Jianguo. Despite her intense hatred for him, which made her go wild upon seeing him, she was exceedingly gentle towards Jiang Hai.
Though I had never experienced maternal love myself, watching the ghost's tender affection made me think—this must be what maternal love is like.
If it wasn't the ghost causing trouble, then why was Jiang Hai still in a coma? What kind of entanglement existed between this Ya Qin and Jiang Jianguo?
