I simply couldn't stand the sight of Solemn's smug expression, so I made excuses about my body not being fully healed and postponed the matter of resolving our grievances.
"Of course, health is important, but I feel sorry for the female ghost trapped in that pillar. She'll have to endure more suffering for a few more days... sigh..." Solemn lamented, shaking his head.
I knew he was saying this for my benefit, so I pretended not to hear and strode out of the police station with my hands behind my back.
Who would have thought that later that night, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep. My mind was filled with images of Lin Zhi and her companion.
So, I shuffled in my slippers to knock on Wang Jun's door. Wang Jun didn't even open his eyes and mumbled, "Ling Feng, what on earth are you doing at this hour?"
"Of course, I'm here to save someone—no, to save a 'ghost'..." I replied.
Only then did Wang Jun open his eyes and say, "You want to go to the office at this time?"
"There's no time like the present. The sooner we resolve this, the better—better than letting things drag on..." I pulled Wang Jun along as we rushed downstairs.
Wang Jun sneezed and said, "Even if we're saving someone, let me at least put on some clothes. If you can't save that ghost, you'll freeze me to death instead."
I glanced at Wang Jun, who was shivering in thermal underwear while I was still in my slippers.
At 3:44 AM, we arrived at Wang Jun's company. After he opened the door for me, I instructed him to wait downstairs.
The door was sealed with tape, and the inside of the company looked just as it had before—furniture overturned and debris scattered everywhere.
The yellow talisman on the pillar emitted a faint glow.
"Lin Zhi, Zhai Junjun, I'm here to help you find peace. My name is Ling Feng. In a moment, I'll be removing the talisman. Please do not cause any trouble, alright?" I called out clearly.
The talisman on the pillar stirred, emitting a rustling sound.
I spread the Kasa on the ground and arranged the Ghost Binding Formation. Only then did I peel off the yellow talisman.
As I suspected, the souls of Lin Zhi and her companion had lost their sanity, acting solely on the resentment they harbored before death.
The moment the talisman was removed, two wisps of black mist lunged toward me. I swiftly dodged out of the Kasa's range and formed a hand seal.
A transparent barrier trapped Lin Zhi and her companion within. The aura of Buddhism countered their vengeful spirits. Lin Zhi's soul let out a piercing scream but dared not approach the barrier.
I sat cross-legged, palms pressed together, reciting the Amitabha Sutra. Time was running short; it would be dire if dawn broke soon.
I drew upon all the Fo Xi from my Dan Tian, and golden Buddhist symbols slowly floated toward Lin Zhi and her companion.
With each recitation, the black resentment surrounding them diminished.
Eventually, they transformed into two transparent phantoms. This was my first time seeing their appearances. Lin Zhi looked pure and innocent, while Zhai Junjun was slightly taller.
A pang of regret struck my heart; what beautiful women they were, how could one bear to treat them so harshly?
"Life and death are predetermined; you need not have any lingering attachments. It is best to reincarnate early," I advised gently.
Lin Zhi smiled at me from within the light, then nodded in agreement.
As the first ray of light pierced through the darkness, Lin Zhi and her companion transformed into specks of stardust, vanishing into the mortal realm.
In the next life, I hope they can be reborn into a good family, free from so many hardships.
As the sunlight broke through the clouds, it illuminated the entire world, casting its glow on the icy, crystalline landscape.
I tidied up my belongings and adjusted my monk's robe. The drowsiness washed over me like a tide; it was time to return and catch up on some sleep.
The slumber I fell into was deep and murky. I awoke again, disturbed by something furry sliding across my face, causing an unbearable itch.
I quickly grabbed the culprit, its fluffy paw caught in my hand. With a sudden burst of energy, I sat up… and found myself holding Fo Zhang in my arms, joy bubbling within me.
Fo Zhang was my only companion; our bond felt even stronger than that of family. If there was anyone in this world I trusted most, Fo Zhang was certainly among them.
Since eating Higanbana, Fo Zhang had been asleep until now. Though I spoke lightly about it, I had been worried all along.
I gently patted Fo Zhang's head, and it responded with a look of contentment, chirping softly.
I examined Fo Zhang closely and noticed its eyes were becoming increasingly bright, radiating intelligence.
"Fo Zhang, what do you want to eat? I'll take you to buy something," I promised excitedly.
Though Fo Zhang didn’t fully understand, it grasped the meaning of "eat." It joyfully bounced on the bed and hopped onto my shoulder, nudging my head as if urging me to go buy some fruit.
After getting dressed, I stepped outside to purchase some fruits and snacks… then stopped at a stall to enjoy a bowl of wontons. The hot soup warmed me from the inside out.
I played with Fo Zhang perched on my shoulder as we made our noisy way back to the rental apartment.
As soon as I reached the entrance, I spotted a familiar figure. The moment I saw him, the anxiety that had been hanging over me lifted instantly.
Since I hadn’t brought much money from home, I was now down to my last few coins, just enough to worry about my next meal.
“Tao Ge, what brings you here? Were you worried waiting for me? Come on in and sit down. We can have a couple of drinks later,” I said, leading Shen Tao upstairs.
Shen Tao glanced around at my humble dwelling and exclaimed, “Ling Feng, you live here?”
Feeling a bit embarrassed, I scratched my head. “Well, it’s not much, but it’s enough to keep a roof over my head. Who am I to be picky?”
Shen Tao patted me on the shoulder and said, “If you’re in trouble, just let me know. After all, we come from the same village; we should help each other out.”
“Is there something specific you need from me this time, Tao Ge?” I asked with a smile.
Shen Tao praised me, “Ling Feng, just as you instructed, things have indeed worked out. Jiang Zong’s son hasn’t shown any signs of improvement… so…”
“So you’re asking me to give it a try?” I countered.
Shen Tao was taken aback. “Isn’t that obvious? Why even ask?”
“Well, regarding the payment, I’ll need to add an extra ten thousand…” I held up a finger.
Shen Tao laughed and replied, “Forget about just ten thousand; even if it’s an extra hundred thousand, it’s fine. As long as you can cure him…”
“Alright then, I’ll head over first thing in the morning.”
Shen Tao grabbed my hand and pulled me outside. "Let's go now... Jiang Zong is waiting. You should show off a bit to give Jiang Zong something to look at..."
Fo Zhang, who had been sitting on the bed surrounded by a pile of fruits, saw me struggling with Shen Tao and, fearing I might be at a disadvantage, jumped onto Shen Tao's head, ready to scratch him.
Fortunately, I shouted just in time, and Shen Tao narrowly escaped a disfiguring incident.
When we arrived at Jiang Zong's house, it was just in time for dinner, and the table was filled with delicious dishes.
Fo Zhang's eyes sparkled as he stared at a plate of braised pork knuckle on the table. I held onto Fo Zhang tightly as he began to panic and shout.
Jiang Zong glanced at me. His indifference was only slightly better than before, but he still gave me a proper look.
"Shen Tao, you have talent. I hope you won't disappoint me; otherwise..." Jiang Zong gestured for me to take a seat.
I took my seat without hesitation. "Jiang Zong, finding me shows you have good taste..."
