I looked at Wang Jun's wide eyes and knew something was amiss. So I asked, "Brother Wang, who are you?"
Wang Jun glanced around before whispering, "Earlier, a girl came to our company. She was quite beautiful, but recently she was found dead in the office. It’s said she was murdered."
He clicked his tongue, not sure whether he was lamenting the loss of such a young woman or condemning the cruel methods of the murderer.
"Did the police find out anything?" I asked curiously; after all, someone had died, and there should be an explanation.
Wang Jun leaned against the wall with a dismissive attitude. "Lin Zhi, our female colleague, her family caused quite a scene at the company after the incident. The company spent a lot of money to settle things down. The victim's family isn't really concerned, and since there are no leads, the police have suspended their investigation."
Hearing this made me feel a wave of sadness. Was justice for their daughter less important than money? "I heard that technology has advanced quite a bit; can't they just extract fingerprints or DNA to identify the murderer?"
Wang Jun scoffed, probably thinking I was too young. "If it were as simple as you think, there wouldn't be so many unsolved cases. But what's strange is that the police found no clues on Lin Zhi. It’s as if there was an invisible killer. Later on, colleagues in the company started saying it might be an Evil Spirit."
This time, I scoffed back. "There aren't that many Evil Spirits in the world; it's mostly people who do these things."
"You might not believe it, but ever since Lin Zhi died, strange things have been happening in the office. Especially during late-night shifts—computers turn on by themselves, coffee machines start working automatically, and so on. It's scared us so much that we rush out right after work; we wouldn't dare stay late in the office," Wang Jun insisted earnestly.
I began to piece things together; perhaps Lin Zhi had died tragically and her spirit lingered in the place she once inhabited, repeating her life.
"I'll need to visit your company to understand the situation better."
Wang Jun nodded. "Next Sunday, when there's no one in the office, could you come with me? If we can resolve this issue, I'll treat you to a big meal. You have no idea what kind of days I've been going through lately."
I escaped from Wang Jun's incessant complaints and took a deep breath outside; the air truly felt refreshing. Indeed, one should not judge by appearances—Wang Jun seemed gentle on the outside, but this place was anything but commendable.
As I rode the bus around the city, watching hurried pedestrians on the streets, I felt a wave of emotion wash over me. Since business wasn't going well, I had to find a way to support myself; perhaps I should look for a job. The rest would be dealt with as it came.
That night was rare; the Gui Wu didn’t come out to cause trouble, allowing me to sleep well.
The next morning, around nine o'clock, Wang Jun knocked on my door with messy hair and sleepy eyes to wake me up. Little did he know that I had already finished my practice and gotten ready.
"You’re all set? Sorry about that! Just give me a moment—five minutes will do," he said before rushing back to get ready.
I locked my door and stood there for a moment. I initially wanted to check with Zhou Shu about my living situation since this place was rented for his son; he should know best if anything was up. However, after knocking for quite some time without any response, I had no choice but to give up.
When I turned back, Wang Jun had already finished packing and was heading downstairs. I glanced at my watch; he was indeed punctual, exactly five minutes on the dot.
Wang Jun looked at my astonished expression and said, "It's something you get used to. Office workers are like that; they can't sleep at night because they're too energized, and in the morning, they wish they could squeeze out every extra minute of sleep."
As we exited the alley, we passed a Baozi Shop. Since breakfast time had already passed, the once-crowded place now only had two or three tables occupied.
"You need to eat well to have the energy to work, right?" Wang Jun waved his hand grandly and treated me to breakfast.
I didn't refuse and sat down to order a few meat buns. Wang Jun curiously asked, "Aren't monks supposed to be vegetarians?"
"Not all of us are; do you understand?" I replied, taking a big bite of my bun.
Wang Jun's company was located in a high-rise office building in the city center. The elevator stopped on the fourteenth floor. As soon as I stepped out of the elevator, I sensed something was off. This type of office building typically has glass exteriors, and logically, it should be bright with sunlight around noon. Yet inside this office building, it felt like evening—gloomy and dim.
Seeing me pause, Wang Jun thought I had noticed something unusual and hurriedly stayed behind me, not daring to move forward.
There was indeed something strange about this fourteenth floor. I cautiously walked ahead; since it was the weekend, the entire floor felt exceptionally quiet, with only the echoes of our footsteps resonating in the stillness.
I stopped in front of a locked glass door with "Jinwei Electronics Technology Co., Ltd." written on one side.
Wang Jun gave me a thumbs-up and said, "Ling Feng, you're quite impressive; you actually found my company directly. That's amazing!"
He pulled out a key from his pocket to unlock the door and then pressed a switch on the wall several times until the lights finally flickered on.
As the lights came on, the layout of the entire office became clear to me. The company was relatively long and narrow, with a row of cubicles along one side of the outer wall and a series of rooms on the other.
The atmosphere inside the office was noticeably heavier than outside; clearly, there was an issue within. "Brother Wang, show me around your company; we can't miss any corner."
Wang Jun's company was quite large, and he provided detailed introductions throughout our tour. Whether it was due to nervousness or his natural tendency to talk a lot, he diligently described everything as we walked. My eyes scanned every inch of the company like an electronic scanner.
After visiting all areas, my heart sank as I began to piece together what was happening. But who could be so malicious as to devise such a wicked scheme?
"Are those stone pillars in your company original?" I asked in a low voice.
Wang Jun thought for a moment and said, "Four of the columns are part of the building's original structure, and one was newly constructed by our manager. Are you suggesting that there’s a problem with these columns?"
He pointed to a nearby column and looked at me with confusion.
I smiled and said nothing, "Alright, let's head back."
Wang Jun appeared incredulous. "Is that it? It's resolved?"
I patted his shoulder and replied, "Not quite. I’ll need your company’s manager to come find me later."
"What am I supposed to do? I still have to go to work..." Seeing that I was already heading out, Wang Jun hurriedly turned off the lights and locked the door, his movements smooth and practiced. He then joined me in the elevator and asked worriedly.
I pulled a talisman from my pocket and handed it to Wang Jun. "Keep this talisman on you at all times; it will ensure your safety. By the way, just so you know, this issue with your company is man-made. If necessary, have your manager come find me."
