The wedding of Shen Tao was set for the eighth day of the lunar month, a date chosen by Ling Er Xiezi from the village. On the afternoon of the seventh, a small van rumbled into the village and parked right in front of Shen Tao's house.
From the vehicle emerged four stunning young women, each with their own unique charm. Their laughter echoed throughout the village like a chorus of songbirds.
In rural weddings, the aim is to create a lively atmosphere, resembling a banquet with nearly twenty tables set up inside and outside the house.
On the morning of the eighth, the weather was exceptionally fine. The sound of firecrackers filled the air from early dawn, crackling continuously. The large red characters pasted on the windows added to the festive cheer.
The bridesmaids were inside keeping the bride company while we groomsmen were outside greeting guests. Most of them were villagers, making it easy to welcome them.
I stood there dazedly staring at the closed door of the inner room, where bursts of girlish laughter occasionally drifted out. Noticing my stupor, Fatty hurried over and nudged me with his elbow, grinning mischievously. "What’s up? Got your eye on someone? I’m going for that short-haired girl named Zhen Zhen, so you better not try to steal her from me!"
I glanced at Fatty and replied calmly, "Let’s see what happens tonight. If you still have the guts to go after her, I won’t compete with you."
With that, I turned back to greet more guests, leaving Fatty standing there bewildered, scratching his head.
The banquet lasted from noon until nightfall. Everyone was immersed in the joyous atmosphere. By eight o'clock in the evening, aside from a group of young people gathered to cause mischief in the bridal chamber, those a bit older were drunkenly heading home to sleep.
On a bright red quilt scattered with peanuts, red dates, longan, and lotus seeds sat Chang Lili, dressed in a stunning red qipao with a rose pinned at her chest. She was seated on the edge of the bed laughing with several bridesmaids.
As our group of young men escorted a tipsy Shen Tao into the room, Chang Lili's gaze lingered on him for a moment before she looked at me and then helped Shen Tao sit down on the bed.
"Tao Ge is so lucky," Fatty lamented theatrically from beside us. "Even when he’s drunk, he has Sister Li Li to take care of him. Poor us single guys..." His mock crying elicited laughter from everyone in the room.
The girl named Zhen Zhen blinked her big eyes and said playfully, "Fatty, come here to your sister; I’ll take care of you..."
Fatty instantly wilted, blushing as he stepped back. I silently scoffed at him; he had been so confident earlier but now that a girl was inviting him over, he was acting like a shy rookie? What an embarrassment!
Seeing Fatty’s bashful demeanor made Zhen Zhen giggle uncontrollably as she covered her mouth and leaned toward her friends to share a laugh.
The group began teasing Shen Tao and his bride again, employing all sorts of tricks they had planned. Seizing an opportunity while everyone was focused on Chang Lili rolling eggs for Shen Tao, I quietly slipped out of the room.
By the time I returned to my room, the egg had already rolled past Shen Tao's important area and was about to roll out from his right pant leg. I casually closed the door behind me and then discreetly began forming hand seals.
A girl among the bridesmaids named Qin Qin waved at me and said, "Ling Feng, do you want to give it a try?"
The crowd erupted in cheers, and I instinctively tightened my grip on my pants, shaking my head. "Tonight, Tao Ge and Sister-in-law are the stars; I can't steal their thunder."
The group continued to cheer as they grabbed an empty mineral water bottle with a chopstick inside. Monkey shouted the rules: "No external force allowed; the two of you have to use your tongues to pull the chopstick out of the bottle. Tao Ge, this test is all about your chemistry with Li Li!"
With that, everyone crowded around Shen Tao and Chang Lili as they stepped forward to start the challenge.
Chang Lili lifted her delicate chin and laughed confidently, "You don't need to push us; we can do it ourselves." She then extended her tongue along with Ding Xiang She and Shen Tao's, trying to leverage the chopstick out of the bottle. However, after several attempts, they were unsuccessful.
The young onlookers had never witnessed such a spectacle before, their eyes wide open as they watched the "show."
"Ah... ah..."
The chubby guy shouted while pointing at Chang Lili, unconsciously stepping back, followed by a few loud cries. Everyone frantically ran toward the door. I stood by the entrance and pushed everyone outside before slamming the door shut with a loud bang. I then stuck a talisman on the door to prevent Chang Lili and the others from escaping.
Once the room was empty, I suddenly slapped my forehead, realizing I had miscalculated something. Shen Tao was drunkenly grinning at me. "Ling Feng... come... drink..."
Seeing me gesturing with my hands repeatedly, when Shen Tao turned around, it seemed that most of the alcohol had worn off. The once beautiful bride now had her eyes drooping down her face, dark hollows under her eyes with maggots occasionally falling out. Her nose had rotted away to just two holes, and decayed flesh hung from her cheekbones.
Shen Tao let out a scream and fell to the ground, propping herself up with her hands while trying to crawl backward.
I thought this unforgettable wedding would be etched in my memory for not just this lifetime but several lifetimes. I hurriedly pulled Shen Tao behind me and said, "Since we're all dead now, why cling to this world?"
The closed room was instantly filled with the stench of rotting flesh. Perhaps due to my recent experience in the cave, my resistance had strengthened somewhat; I only felt slightly nauseous but did not vomit.
"Gurgle..." Chang Lili's once cherry-like lips were now gone, leaving only yellowed teeth exposed. Due to severe decay, her vocal cords were damaged; restored to her true form, Chang Lili could only laugh in a raspy manner.
As the temperature in the room continued to rise, the other bridesmaids showed varying degrees of decay as well. The five beautiful women quickly transformed into piles of rotten flesh.
Behind me, Shen Tao seemed to have sobered up; perhaps recalling their days sharing a bed with Chang Lili and engaging in unspeakable acts made her feel queasy now as she retched in despair.
I grabbed Shen Tao by the collar, intending to push him out the door, but to my surprise, Chang Lili was already charging at us, her hands flailing and maggots dropping from her body.
I held back my disgust and swung the Ruyi Stick in a circular motion, forming a shield to block Chang Lili and the others. I shouted to Shen Tao behind me, "Get out now!"
Shen Tao was already in a state of panic. At my shout, he scrambled to the door, twisting the doorknob and bolting outside.
I cursed under my breath; this guy didn’t even close the door! Was he trying to let those rotting corpses out to wreak havoc?
As soon as the door opened, the fat guy and his friends rushed over. It was a bad idea—upon seeing the scene, the fat guy immediately fainted. I yelled at the relatively calm Rat, "Close the door!"
Rat was quick on his feet and reached out to shut the door.
Only then did I breathe a sigh of relief. With everyone safely outside, I could finally focus all my energy on dealing with these disgusting corpses.
