Although the monster's eyes were invisible, its hearing was exceptionally sharp. As I retched, its foul-smelling tongue shot out like a sword.
I had no choice but to awkwardly sidestep. The frustration in my heart was overwhelming.
It was ugly enough; it should have stayed underground. Coming out to scare people was simply unacceptable. I grasped the Ruyi Stick tightly and swung it back at the creature. The monster quickly retracted its tongue, screeching as it scrambled up the mountainside, eventually landing on the ground, all fours planted firmly, continuously roaring at me.
Since it wasn't a demon, the techniques of the Buddhist Sect were useless; I could only fight back directly. The monster pushed off the ground with its powerful hind legs and leaped toward me, its sharp claws slashing through the air.
With the stick in hand, I took advantage of a nearby protruding rock to propel myself upward and swung down with all my might, like Mount Tai crashing down.
The monster took a heavy blow from my strike, letting out a chilling scream that sent shivers down my spine, reminiscent of nails scraping against glass.
Despite the murky blue slime oozing from its head, its ferocity did not wane. It pressed down on my shoulders with both hands, pinning me firmly to the ground.
Bending down, it aimed to bite my neck. If those teeth sank in, I would likely lose half my neck. I raised the Ruyi Stick horizontally to block its jaws.
Then, I quickly kneed upward. Although I couldn't tell if this monster was male or female, targeting vital areas was always a sound strategy.
Sure enough, this strike proved effective; the monster's scream became even more piercing as it flailed wildly in the cave. I held my breath and steadied myself nearby, gripping the Ruyi Stick like a baseball bat.
As the creature stumbled closer to me in its chaotic movements, I swung hard at its head. I put all my strength into that blow, and it caved in a significant portion of its skull.
Even so, astonishingly, the monster did not die immediately; it lay on the ground convulsing, dark blue substance pooling around its head—presumably its brain matter.
I couldn't tell if it had lost control before dying or what happened, but an overwhelming stench filled the cave. Unable to bear it any longer, I covered my mouth with one hand and ran deeper into the cave.
After running for a while, the air finally cleared up. I gasped for breath as I noticed some moisture in the air. Once my breathing steadied a bit, I listened closely and was surprised to hear flowing water.
Could it be an underground river? But I hadn't run that far! Looking at the Ruyi Stick in my hand made my stomach churn. Since there was water ahead, I figured it would be best to wash up; otherwise, with this stench, I'd be lucky if I could eat anything.
The Dark River stretched about five or six meters wide. I dipped my hand into the water to gauge its flow; perhaps due to recent rains, the river was full and flowing swiftly.
I stripped off my clothes covered in slime and changed into a clean outfit. After washing the Ruyi Stick several times as well, I stood up and carefully surveyed my surroundings.
I seemed to have entered the heart of the main peak of Daqingshan. As I shone my flashlight upwards, I was surprised to find that I couldn't see the rocks above me. Above the Dark River, some stone stalactites hung down like traps set by hunters.
I continued to walk down the path along the Dark River. This route was surprisingly quiet, devoid of any grotesque monsters or the suffocating black mist of death; only the gentle sound of flowing water accompanied me.
“Boom… Boom…”
As I got closer, the rumbling sound grew louder, resembling the bass from a bar that quickened my heartbeat.
The air around me was thick with moisture. I cautiously moved forward when suddenly a clattering sound of falling gravel startled me.
I quickly shone my light downwards and stepped back a few paces to steady my nerves. It was fortunate that I did; had I taken another step forward, I might have fallen into the abyss below, meeting a gruesome end.
The water of the Dark River surged into this massive pit, and the earlier rumbling was caused by the tremendous drop, as the water crashed against the rocks with a thunderous roar.
This was a colossal underground waterfall.
Since this path seemed impassable, I considered taking a detour. The black mist at the entrance and the eerie presence of monsters suggested that something unusual was afoot. Since I had come this far, I certainly couldn't leave empty-handed.
I began to circle around the edge of the pit and discovered a set of stone steps spiraling downwards at an inconspicuous corner. Though rough and only a few dozen centimeters long, these steps were clearly not naturally formed. Had someone ventured into this underground cave before? And if so, what had brought them here?
I descended the stone steps until I reached the bottom of the pit. Looking up again, I noticed a pool of water not far away, with huge splashes erupting from it. It was truly a magnificent sight.
I illuminated my surroundings with my flashlight and was astonished to find a large boulder protruding in the center of the pool. There seemed to be something on top of it!
Approaching the edge of the pool, I could make out what appeared to be a coffin resting atop the giant stone!
Memories flooded back of stories from the elders in my village. Our village had once been considered a treasure trove in ancient times, with many tombs scattered throughout Daqingshan. Occasionally, hunters would stumble upon valuable relics in these mountains.
My heart raced at the thought; if I could find something valuable for my family's humble house, just one item could allow us to build a proper home or even buy a car!
I swallowed hard, my eyes fixated on the coffin atop the boulder as thoughts of striking it rich filled my mind—completely unaware that something in the shadows behind me was slowly creeping closer.
“Roar… Roar…”
A sudden wave of foul breath wafted from behind me. Fortunately, my years of training were not in vain. Although I had no idea what was lurking behind, I quickly crouched down and rolled to the side.
I swiftly drew out the Ruyi Stick and shone my flashlight, finally revealing that it was two armored corpses. Judging by the rust stains and their design, these bodies must have been dead for many years.
As for why they had come back to life at this moment, I was unsure. Had I inadvertently triggered some mechanism?
The two corpses began to roar at me, their mouths revealing long fangs. Their eyes glowed with an eerie red light, and I recalled the green hair sprouting from their bodies earlier.
I could conclude that these were Green-Haired Zombies. As for why they had awakened now, it was likely due to my breath; the scent of a living person is a deadly lure for zombies or Gui Wu.
I positioned the Ruyi Stick across my chest and cursed inwardly. There truly is no such thing as a free lunch; I hadn’t even found the treasure yet and already encountered two Green-Haired Zombies.
