I had no idea what Guan Laotou had smeared on the needle; my tongue pressed against the roof of my mouth as I silently recited the Heart Sutra. The Buddha's power within my Dantian felt as if it had been frozen.
After a long struggle, I finally regained some strength. Although I couldn't see Liu Er, I could hear her soft sobs.
Frustration welled up inside me. If I hadn't acted impulsively back then, perhaps Liu Er and I would have already escaped the town.
"Liu Er, don't cry. It's all Ling Feng's fault," I said apologetically.
Liu Er was surprised that I had managed to wake up. " Ling Feng, you're okay?"
I replied, "I'm fine. Just fell victim to Guan Laotou's drug."
I strained against the ropes binding my hands, but it was futile. I cursed under my breath, feeling frustrated.
My master had always warned me about the treachery of human hearts. I used to think he was exaggerating to scare me, but here I was, bound and helpless right after leaving the mountain. When those two from the Holy Demon Sect returned, it seemed that both Liu Er and I would have no way out.
Thinking of Liu Er's grandfather's tragic death sent a shiver down my spine.
" Ling Feng, I'm sorry. I've dragged you into this," Liu Er's voice was low.
I replied, "There's nothing to apologize for. We haven't done anything wrong; it's those wicked people who should be sorry. Liu Er, don't be afraid. It's just death; at least we can keep each other company as siblings, even on the Huangquan Road."
As soon as I finished speaking, Liu Er began to cry even harder.
I looked around, wondering if there was any way to escape. Until the last moment, I couldn't give up.
In the dim room, there were occasional chirping sounds that filled me with hope. How could I have forgotten about the Buddha Sound?
So I prayed silently in my heart, hoping that the White Mouse was nearby.
After the whistle sounded, I strained my ears to listen to the movements inside the room.
It was still eerily quiet.
Just as I was about to give up, a familiar chirping sound came from the beams above.
I looked up and saw that Buddha Sound seemed to have gained a bit of weight, but its movements were still as agile as ever.
"You little rascal, come over here and untie me," I called out to Buddha Sound.
"Who are you talking to, Ling Feng?" Liu Er asked curiously.
I smiled and said, "Indeed, there's always a way out. Liu Er, we are blessed with good fortune. Our savior has arrived..."
"Savior? At this point, where would a savior come from?" Liu Er sighed.
I couldn't hide my excitement as I replied, "It's that chubby white mouse, the one that looks like a squirrel."
"What can a mouse do? Are you saying it can understand human speech and untie us?" Liu Er lamented, despair evident in his voice.
I urged Buddha Sound, "Hurry, bite through our ropes; otherwise, we're done for."
Buddha Sound jumped down from the beam as if it were tipsy, landing on my shoulder. Its small eyes darted around before it crawled down to my wrist.
"Chomp... chomp..."
The sound of teeth gnawing on the ropes filled the air. In no time at all, the rope as thick as my fingers was bitten through by Buddha Sound.
Feeling the rope on one hand snap, I quickly turned around and helped to untie the rope on Liu Er's hands.
Once the rope was undone, I didn't dare to waste any time. Grabbing Liu Er, I dashed towards the back kitchen.
I thought about Guan Laotou going to send a message. If we could get out of town from the ground, we would definitely run into him. It would be better to take the secret passage instead, catching them off guard.
The secret passage was pitch dark, just over my height. I crouched down and hurriedly walked with Liu Er.
Ahead, Buddha Sound was scouting the way, which eased my mind a little.
I could see a faint light shining through a hole not far ahead. My heart leaped with joy; it felt as if hope was right in front of me.
"Liu Er, once we get out, I'll take you to my house. My dad cooks really well..." I said with a smile as I turned back to Liu Er.
Liu Er merely hummed in response, not saying anything further.
As we pushed aside the weeds in front of us and crawled out of the secret passage, breathing in the cool night air, I suddenly felt like we had survived a disaster.
The exit of the secret passage was in a place overgrown with weeds. There were many such places in the mountains—ordinary and unremarkable...
I truly admired Guan Laotou for his meticulous planning.
"Chirp chirp..."
Fo Zhang's urgent calls disrupted my thoughts.
Before I could react, before we had a chance to escape, a large net suddenly fell over us.
A few men burst out from the forest, grabbing the corners of the large net, which tightened around me and Liu Er, binding us closely together.
Guan Laotou held a torch, his face full of sycophantic eagerness as he guided a man and a woman along the path.

Seeing Guan Laotou's obsequious demeanor made me feel utterly disgusted.
The woman approached Liu Er, her slender fingers pinching Liu Er's chin. After examining her for a long while, she nodded to the man and said, "Not bad. This girl is exactly who we were looking for."
The man chuckled, "At last, we can take credit for this. Once we return, the Helmsman will surely reward us handsomely."
I felt Liu Er trembling violently, so I reached out to grasp her frail hand.
Perhaps sensing the warmth in my palm, Liu Er's shivering eased slightly.
"Why are you so intent on capturing Liu Er?" I asked the man, looking him in the eye.
The man seemed surprised by my calmness at that moment rather than begging for mercy. He scrutinized me from head to toe and remarked, "Kid, you’re quite interesting..."
The woman coldly interjected, "What are you wasting time on him for? Just kill him..."
Upon hearing this, Liu Er suddenly spoke up, "Let Ling Feng go. I'll go with you. I don’t know why you want to kill my grandfather or why you’ve captured me, but if you intend to harm Ling Feng, you’ll have to take my body first."

I was taken aback and said, "You actually practice such dark arts as soul extraction and spirit refining?"
The man raised an eyebrow in surprise and replied, "You, a monk, actually have such knowledge. It seems I have underestimated the people of the current martial world..."
Liu Er snorted coldly and said, "If you don't believe me, you can try. Take my corpse back with you; do you really think you can deliver it without trouble?"
The man exchanged a glance with the woman beside him, then nodded, "As long as you cooperate and come back with us willingly, we won't make things difficult for this monk."
"Liu Er, what’s there to discuss with them? In the end, it's just death, right? A beheading is just a small scar," I tugged at Liu Er's hand, signaling her not to waste her breath.
However, Liu Er whispered, " Ling Feng, it's all because of Liu Er that you're in this situation. So, Liu Er can't let anything happen to you. Besides, your father is still waiting for you at home..."
When she mentioned my father, my initially brave resolve to face death suddenly softened. I stood there in a daze, unable to speak.
