During the court meeting, Lord Zhou of the Ministry of Rites spoke passionately. He was a tall man with a booming voice, and his words made the officials below nod in agreement.
"Your Majesty, this matter is of great importance," Lord Zhou continued. "The prophecy from the northern Top Scholar has sparked discussions everywhere. There are even rumors in the Jianghu that this prophecy aligns with certain old events, which may be troubling..."
Before he could finish, an Imperial Inspector chimed in, "I second that! The actions of the Qintian Observatory are indeed overstepping!"
The hall was filled with murmurs. Lord Zhang stood among the officials, cold sweat forming on his forehead. He was acutely aware of the undercurrents in the court these days, as various factions sought to exploit this prophecy for their own ends.
"My dear ministers," the Emperor finally spoke from his dragon throne, "I believe that since the celestial phenomena have issued a warning, we should take it seriously. What does Zhou Ai Qing think?"
A glimmer of insight flashed in Lord Zhou's eyes. "Your Majesty is wise. However, the origins of this prophecy are suspicious. I suggest we investigate this matter thoroughly. Perhaps we should order the Qintian Observatory to make their calculation process public?"
At these words, Lord Zhang's heart skipped a beat. If they were to disclose the calculation process, Liu Ying's unique methods of deduction would surely come under scrutiny.
As he hesitated, he suddenly heard the Emperor say, "That sounds reasonable. However..." The Emperor's gaze deepened. "With Qixi approaching, the public has long awaited the Qintian Observatory's marriage predictions. Let us set this matter aside for now and discuss it after Qixi."
After the court meeting concluded, just as Lord Zhou was about to leave, a servant hurriedly approached him and whispered a few words in his ear. His brow furrowed. "Is that true?"
"Absolutely," the servant replied in a low voice. "That 'madman' is indeed connected to the Xu Family case. Moreover, he has been frequently spotted near the Qintian Observatory lately."
A cold light flashed in Lord Zhou's eyes. "Investigate! Find out his background thoroughly. Additionally..." He cast a meaningful glance toward the direction of the Qintian Observatory. "Keep a close watch on Liu Ying as well."
Meanwhile, within the Qintian Observatory, Lord Zhang was pacing in his office. On his desk lay an urgent document that read: "Scholars from many regions in the north have gathered to demand an explanation..."
"Lord Zhang." Liu Ying was hastily summoned and upon seeing the contents of the document, her expression changed.
"This situation is troublesome," Lord Zhang sighed. "Lord Zhou's outburst today clearly indicates he came prepared. If it weren't for His Majesty using Qixi predictions as an excuse to suppress this matter..."
"What do you mean by that?"
"The date of Qixi is approaching; we cannot afford any mistakes with marriage predictions." Lord Zhang said seriously, "This matter will be entrusted to you to oversee. If we can safely pass through Qixi, there may still be hope."
Just as Liu Ying was about to respond, a commotion erupted outside. An official rushed in breathlessly: "My lord, it's bad! The southern examination officials have jointly submitted a letter questioning our Qintian Observatory's predictions for being unfair!"
Lord Zhang's expression changed drastically. With both sides now involved, this prophecy issue was likely to escalate further.
"My lord," Liu Ying said solemnly, "I am willing to take on this responsibility. Since the celestial phenomena have appeared, there must be a predetermined outcome. On the night of Qixi, the truth will surely come to light."
"Good!" Lord Zhang slammed his hand on the table. "I trust you. However..." He lowered his voice, "You must be cautious of Lord Zhou. I've heard he has already sent people to investigate your background."
A chill ran down Liu Ying's spine. Lord Zhou was the presiding official during the Xu Family case years ago; now his attention on her likely extended beyond just matters of prophecy.
As she stepped out of her office, she caught sight of a familiar figure darting around a street corner in the distance. The swaying broken fan and manic laughter served as reminders—an even greater storm was brewing.
She and Xu Yuan were already caught in the web.
