With a long howl directed at the sky, Shui Ying Xue cursed inwardly. How could she have forgotten that before descending to the mortal realm, the Lord of the Celestial Immortals had mentioned she would need to transform once more?
Covered in fur and with a childish voice, what on earth had she turned into?
Zhan Qian Zhao snapped back to reality, chuckling softly as he lifted her from the damp ground. He held her by the scruff of her neck, bringing her closer to his eyes for a careful inspection. "Oh—so the esteemed Lord Matchmaker has transformed into a... Rustic Dog Immortal."
Shui Ying Xue stared at him with her wet eyes, utterly speechless.
Zhan Qian Zhao glanced down and laughed, "And it's a... male Rustic Dog Immortal."
Shui Ying Xue let out a soft whimper.
"Zhan'er?" At the entrance of the grand estate, someone had already gone inside to announce their arrival. Now, an elderly lady and several middle-aged women hurried out from within.
"Grandmother, Mother." Zhan Qian Zhao greeted them while holding her. A sharp-eyed little girl pointed at the dog in his arms and giggled, "Cousin, didn't you say you hated dogs the most? What is this?"
Zhan Qian Zhao looked down at her in his arms, a meaningful smile creeping onto his lips. Shui Ying Xue suddenly felt an ominous premonition.
"This is no ordinary dog; this is my wife."
Everyone fell silent.
Before the astonished crowd, Master Zhan affectionately addressed the ugly Rustic Dog in his arms, "Now that you've entered the Zhan Family's door, don't even think about leaving. From now on, you'll cook for me and keep me company while I gaze at the stars and the moon."
Everyone and a certain dog: "..."
One day.
When the tale of Shui Ying Xue and Zhan Qian Zhao's celestial romance circulated through various bookstores, Shui Ying Xue decided to follow the trend and bought a copy to read.
Upon reaching a certain scene where they first met, Shui Ying Xue couldn't sit still. She clutched the book and rushed to bother Zhan Qian Zhao: "Qian Zhao, look! I just realized something's off here! If you were about to be burned alive near your home and then met me, why did you silently follow me to the inn instead of going straight home to explain everything to your family?"
Zhan Qian Zhao was practicing calligraphy in his study when he heard her question. He set down his brush, sat back, and pulled her onto his lap.
"Why would I not go home but instead go to the inn with you?"
Shui Ying Xue wrapped her arms around his neck, her eyes sparkling like an eager puppy looking up at its owner, nodding enthusiastically.
"Because I know that a stranger wouldn't save me for no reason; they must have some ulterior motive." Zhan Qian Zhao smiled lightly, but his left hand subtly caressed her waist.
"Why would I allow you to have your motives instead of slipping away before you could say anything? Because I want to gain something in return for what you desire." His right hand began to wander restlessly.
"What do I want in return..."
"Enough! I get it! Please just shut up! Not just shut up!" The person currently experiencing the "reward" was exasperated, grabbing Zhan Qian Zhao's hand and panting. This guy's mischievous nature was still as charming as ever!
What Zhan Qian Zhao didn't say was that she truly believed he was a shopaholic who took her money to go on shopping sprees everywhere.
The Spirit Stone was still neatly wrapped in his handkerchief, placed closest to his heart.
The only regret he felt now was that Shui Ying Xue trusted him too much and was rather naive; she had never bothered to check the results of his shopping trip that day.
If she had just taken a moment to look, she would have discovered that it was filled with gifts from the Zhan Residence meant for the New Bride, along with the carefully prepared Betrothal Gifts he had brought.
