Shui Ying Xue felt as if a thousand galloping steeds were racing through her heart, and she had to turn her thoughts upside down just to stop the tears and snot from streaming down to her feet.
Was she really going to run up to him with a friendly smile, give his thigh a hard squeeze, and then say, "I'm so sorry! There was a mosquito on the inside of your thigh, and I couldn't help but swat it for you"? Who would believe that!
" Ms . Shui? Ms . Shui?" Zhan Qian Zhao called out several times before pulling her back from her thoughts.
His expression was somewhat inscrutable. "If I'm not mistaken, it seems that Ms . Shui is quite interested in... that area of mine. I must say, I feel truly honored."
Shui Ying Xue's face flushed at his teasing, and she quickly averted her gaze. Her eyes wandered as she absentmindedly looked around, trying to find something to say. "Even though we’ve settled for a room, there’s only one set of bedding. How are we going to sleep at night?"
" Ms . Shui need not worry. I still have enough money to buy some blankets or something. I'll just sleep on the floor tonight."
Shui Ying Xue touched her purse, gripping a hard object tightly, and asked, "How much do you have left?"
Zhan Qian Zhao tilted his head slightly and replied, "I probably have a few taels of white silver and a few Copper Coins."
Shui Ying Xue had never participated in worldly transactions; she only knew the exchange rates for Spirit Stones and Gold, and was unfamiliar with white silver and Copper Coins.
Carefully, she laid the stone in her palm and extended it towards Zhan Qian Zhao, cautiously probing, "I wonder if you recognize this. It’s said that... one piece can be exchanged for ten thousand taels of Gold."
Zhan Qian Zhao's eyes widened slightly.
Shui Ying Xue placed the Spirit Stone into Zhan Qian Zhao's hand and glanced at his strangely silent face, feeling even more anxious. "How do Gold and white silver exchange? I wonder if one piece can be traded for a set of bedding... If not, I still have some here."
After saying that, she couldn't bear to look at Zhan Qian Zhao's increasingly strange expression. She quickly pulled out her pouch and poured out two or three dozen high-quality Spirit Stones of various sizes.
...
Zhan Qian Zhao was momentarily speechless.
This was the first time Shui Ying Xue had seen such an incredulous expression on Zhan Qian Zhao's face.
Fortunately, they were in one of the largest towns, where exchanging a Spirit Stone was not a monumental affair.
Zhan Qian Zhao seemed to be from a well-off family. After receiving Shui Ying Xue's hint that "this Spirit Stone is yours, and all the gold from the exchange is yours too; I have plenty," he wasted no time in purchasing the best bedding, sheets, and a palm mat before rushing out again to continue shopping.
Shui Ying Xue had little concept of shopping. She lay on her back on the inn's bed, her mind occupied with how to discreetly remove that damned red thread without appearing lewd or intentional.
She had come up with Plan A, Plan B, and even a perfect version of Plan B. Just as she was contemplating Plan C, Zhan Qian Zhao returned from his shopping spree, kicking the door open as he walked in.
Seeing her sprawled across the bed, staring at him with wide eyes, he couldn't help but smile gently and asked, "Aren't you going to rest?"
Shui Ying Xue glanced outside and suddenly realized how late it had become.
"I'll go to sleep now." She felt a bit embarrassed as she watched him spread out the blanket close to her. Flushing, she buried her face in the covers and turned towards the wall.
Though she was already feeling sleepy, she couldn't allow herself to drift off. Because for any of her plans to work, the bare minimum requirement was that she needed to stay awake.
Zhan Qian Zhao quickly tidied up, and just as Shui Ying Xue felt her eyelids fluttering at a rapid pace, he finally lay down quietly and blew out the light.
The moment the room was plunged into darkness, Shui Ying Xue's heart began to race unexpectedly, pounding as if it wanted to leap out of her chest.
Having spent the day outside, Zhan Qian Zhao was already quite tired. It wasn't long before his breathing became steady.
His breaths echoed in the stillness of the night, amplifying in her ears, causing Shui Ying Xue to lose all sense of sleepiness. Her cheeks flushed as she reveled in the intimate atmosphere that enveloped them.
After waiting for a quarter of an hour, her eyes had adjusted to the darkness, allowing her to see clearly. She pinched her throat and pretended to groggily moan softly a few times before rolling herself up in the blanket and tumbling off the bed to land beside him.
In that split second of falling, her hand landed precisely on his leg, and she began to fumble around.
Zhan Qian Zhao's breathing seemed to quietly grow heavier.
