"I... Is this... home?"
After regaining consciousness, Lu Sha's first thought was this. Her memory had gone blank at that moment.
Her whole body ached, and she didn't even want to open her eyes. She tentatively moved her limbs, but it felt like something was embedded in the nerves just below her wrists, a sensation that was particularly pronounced.
Realizing something was wrong, Lu Sha tried to move her hands and feet again, but an overwhelming sense of dread made it hard to bear—her limbs had almost no room to move, and the cold metal plate beneath her began to send chilling signals to her back. Growing increasingly anxious, Lu Sha twisted her ankles side to side, but it seemed they were also restrained by some metal rings.
At this point, Lu Sha was too scared to feel sleepy anymore. She suddenly opened her eyes and looked around.
This appeared to be an iron room used for experiments; aside from the equipment scattered about, it was quite spacious. After observing the room, her heart sank at the sight of various instruments, syringes, and knives on the tables on either side.
Not daring to look too closely, Lu Sha lowered her gaze to her bound hands and feet, but in her peripheral vision, she noticed dried bloodstains on the floor below!
"Ah!"
Lu Sha was terrified beyond measure as a horrifying thought began to swirl in her mind. Her entire body involuntarily shook, causing the bed to tilt; the rusty support parts creaked with her movements.
The only light in the room flickered from a chandelier in the center of the ceiling. Out of the corner of her eye, she vaguely saw something...
Summoning her courage, Lu Sha turned her head to the right and was instantly startled—there was a man next to her, also restrained like she was.
What shocked her more was that after observing for so long, she hadn't noticed such a large companion beside her?
The man's unblinking gaze made Lu Sha wonder if this was some kind of hallucination brought on by extreme fear and chaotic thoughts...
"Hello, um... could you tell me where we are?" Lu Sha cautiously asked the strange man.
"I find your perception quite remarkable; I've been lying right next to you and you didn't even glance my way," the man replied expressionlessly. "We're at Viper Base. The bed you're lying on used to belong to someone else—a Viper thug who died during genetic experiments."
Lu Sha's pupils dilated sharply as she gasped in horror; despair washed over her instantly.
She turned away from the man's chilling gaze and tried to calm herself before turning back with a forced smile. "Shall we introduce ourselves? My name is Lu Sha."
Seeing that Lu Sha hadn't broken down into tears or panic, the man seemed somewhat relieved and managed a wry smile: "We're both one foot in the grave already; what's there to get acquainted about? Anyway... I'm Lin Weixing. I suppose this is fate."
"Oh, you're awake now, beautiful."
Probably having heard some noise outside, the automatic door of the lab opened, and Brother Ba walked in with a smirk directed at Lu Sha, hands behind his back, followed by several oddly dressed individuals.
Though she didn't know who they were, there was no doubt that her adoptive father's death and the destruction of their home were connected to any thug from Viper. In an instant, anger ignited within Lu Sha: "Viper? You’re all just a bunch of scum who burned down our homes! What kind of skill is it to bully the weak and sick? Do you dare challenge the military? Huh?! Trash! If you have guts, let me go; I'll twist your head off!"
Watching this wild girl with disheveled hair yell at him, Brother Ba merely shrugged nonchalantly.
"Let you go? Oh ho ho, that's impossible, ma'am. We still need you for scientific contributions."
Lu Sha's trash talk seemed not to faze Brother Ba at all; he turned around and gestured for one of the researchers behind him to place a box on the table.
Then he personally unlocked the box and opened it; inside were two syringes filled with blue liquid.
"What are you going to do now?"
Seeing the syringes made Lin Weixing tense up instinctively.
"Don't worry; we're just going to inject you with some immunization medication. The hygiene here isn't great; you know how it is," said the researcher as he took out a syringe and walked between Lin Weixing and Lu Sha, glancing back at Brother Ba while waiting for his selection.
"How about... we start with you?" Brother Ba pointed at Lin Weixing.
"A man should always be a bit stronger."
"No, no! Please, don't!" Lin Weixing screamed in terror, struggling violently as the syringe drew closer to Lu Sha's frightened and trembling eyes, finally plunging into Lin Weixing's flesh.
After the injection, the laboratory fell into a dead silence. Everyone stared at Lin Weixing, waiting for his reaction.
There was none.
However, only Lin Weixing felt something racing around inside his body.
"Very good!" Brother Ba clapped happily and pointed at Lu Sha, "Next!"
"Uh ah—ah! Ah—"
But just as Brother Ba finished speaking, Lin Weixing began to scream wildly.
Rather than screaming, it sounded more like the roar of a beast.
Lin Weixing, convulsing all over, turned his face toward Lu Sha. A tear slipped from his helpless eyes, seemingly pleading for any comfort she could offer.
But what could Lu Sha do? She was too terrified to speak, merely watching silently as Lin Weixing neared death.
Brother Ba and the others could only see Lin Weixing's convulsions; only from Lu Sha's angle could she see the bones in Lin Weixing's arm twisting beneath the skin, which was gradually showing brownish-red streaks...
It was horrifying.
Brother Ba's face turned pale instantly as he stepped back, signaling his subordinates not to move. They all watched as Lin Weixing continued to scream.
After convulsing for over ten minutes, Lin Weixing finally fell silent, lying motionless as if there was no hope left.
At Brother Ba's signal, a researcher stepped forward to check for breath and glanced at the ECG monitor beside him before reporting back to Brother Ba: "There's still a faint breath, extremely weak. We'll have to see how it goes."
Brother Ba nodded and left the laboratory with his team without saying anything to Lu Sha.
"See how it goes?" This phrase sent chills down Lu Sha's spine. Looking at her now motionless companion, she felt an overwhelming sense of impending doom and thought she might completely break down.
"Weixing, Weixing, are you okay?" Lu Sha whispered Lin Weixing's name, fear and sorrow twisting her eyes as tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.
"Please talk... I beg you... don't die."
Unable to hold back any longer, Lu Sha turned her head away and stared at the ECG monitor at her own bed, sobbing violently.
In another laboratory,
According to the calendar, this should be the second week since Liang Muqi defected and started working at Viper Base.
A test tube quietly placed on the table suddenly received a drop of blue liquid from Liang Muqi. The ripples that rose and quickly calmed reflected blue light on his glasses.
As a polymath proficient in various scientific fields, Liang Muqi had never expressed doubt about his experiments. However, when Brother Ba came in and took his first-generation unknown element experiment for testing, he felt uneasy.
After all, this was an element from the moon that no one understood; discovering that it had a promoting effect on human cells was purely coincidental.
While he was musing over this, Brother Ba stormed in angrily, striding forward to question him: "What’s wrong with your serum? You almost killed my test subject! Do you know how hard it is to get a living specimen?!"
"I told you this is first generation; it's normal for there to be issues," Liang Muqi continued working without pausing. "But since you've used it anyway, I can only say—it's better if it dies."
"Ha?!" Brother Ba thought he had misheard. "Dying is the best? I can't believe you would say something so insane!"
"Insane? Who's really insane here? How many lives have you all destroyed?"
Upon hearing this, Liang Muqi, who had been frowning, immediately stopped what he was doing, put down the IV drip, and turned around. "I was just going along with local customs when I said that. Since you all want to go through with this inhumane act, I can only accompany you. Besides, at least he made us realize that the first-generation serum is harmful to the human body and needs improvement. In the evening, a group of Viper members opened the door to the laboratory where Lin Weixing and Lu Sha were being held. They released Lu Sha from her restraints and rudely shouted, "You have ten minutes to move around; food is on the floor. Go to the bathroom if you need to—someone will follow you; don't even think about escaping!"
"Are you feeding dogs or what?!" Lu Sha felt furious as she glared at them; as soon as her restraints were removed, she threw a punch at one of the thugs!
"Hey! Don't move!"
The thugs quickly pulled their guns and aimed at Lu Sha.
Seeing the red dots on her chest, Lu Sha gritted her teeth and squatted down to pick up the food bowl from the ground.
Once Lu Sha calmed down, one thug lowered his gun and approached Lin Weixing to check for signs of life.
"He's gone."
A thunderbolt struck down as Lu Sha turned around sharply; she saw him call over two accomplices who intended to carry Lin Weixing's body away for cremation.
However, a terrifying scene unfolded.
"Bang!"
As if triggered by something, just when they released Lu Sha from her restraints, she saw Lin Weixing's ECG flatline suddenly spike dramatically!
"Oh no!" Lu Sha dropped the food bowl as an ominous premonition washed over her.
"Uh..." Slowly opening his eyes, Lin Weixing moved his fingers. His eyes were filled with bloodshot veins, and suddenly the flesh on his arm tore open, revealing two extremely long bone spikes!
"What..."
Before the cannon fodder thug could finish his exclamation, Lin Weixing had already jumped off the bed with a roar, stabbing one thug right through the heart. Then, in a beastly frenzy, he lunged at another thug who was still in shock...
"Crack!"
It was the crisp sound of a neck being bitten through!
The light bulb, already flickering due to electrical issues, swayed violently as Lin Weixing moved rapidly around the room.
"Kill him!"
Several soldiers opened fire on Lin Weixing! With the flickering lights as cover, Lin Weixing darted across the floor like a deadly specter.
In the flashes of gunfire, Lu Sha, who was already sitting on the ground in fear, vaguely saw Lin Weixing jumping against the walls. By the time the light bulb illuminated again, he had already appeared before the thugs! With a leap, there was a scream and the sound of flesh being torn apart.
Using the dimming light as cover, he vanished once more. Lu Sha felt a gust of wind brush past her face, followed by another scream! Amidst Lu Sha's extreme terror-filled shrieks, in the flickering light, yet another thug was pierced through the chest by Lin Weixing!
The last soldier could no longer hesitate; he raised his gun and aimed at Lin Weixing's back, shouting as he pressed down hard on the trigger without letting go!
"Ah—"
"Bang!"
The last shell casing fell to the ground with a metallic echo. Through the smoke emerging from the gun's muzzle, the thugs saw this creature now turned sideways grinning wickedly as it approached them step by step.
The bullet holes disappeared!
"Ah!" The thug stumbled backward and fell over, exclaiming, "What kind of monster are you?!"
"Ah—"
Lu Sha covered her ears and crawled into a corner, feeling that she would be the next victim.
However, in the flickering light, she saw Lin Weixing pull out a bone spike from one of the soldiers and stand up. He even smiled at her before crashing through the iron door and escaping.
Lu Sha stared blankly for a moment at the door that had been smashed open. In a panic, she got up and ran after him.
However, Lin Weixing ran too fast; she lost sight of him at the first fork in the path. Not familiar with her surroundings, she hid and stumbled into a room but was soon discovered by soldiers and taken back.
Meanwhile, Lin Weixing had long since vanished without a trace; only screams and pleas for mercy echoed throughout the base.
On her way back after being captured, Lu Sha looked at the gruesome corpses of thugs in the hallway and suppressed the bile rising in her throat.
Led by thugs, Lu Sha rushed into the bathroom and stared blankly at her reflection in the mirror above the sink.
