A few days later, Xiaomei and her colleagues decided to take collective action. They drafted an open letter together, outlining the various injustices the company had committed regarding severance compensation, and attached a crucial internal document. They then sent the letter to several influential tech media outlets, hoping for a stir in public opinion.
Soon, the open letter caused a sensation online. Many laid-off programmers began to share their experiences of unfair treatment by the company on social media, and public sentiment quickly escalated. “Xiaomei, did you see the news?” Zhang Xiaohu excitedly called her. “The company's situation is trending!”

“Oh?” Xiaomei raised an eyebrow, her tone laced with a hint of cold amusement. “You didn’t seem willing to resolve this before.”
The HR Manager paused for a moment on the phone, seemingly embarrassed. “The company now hopes to negotiate amicably and avoid escalating the issue. We can offer you compensation based on an N+2 standard, along with additional severance pay as a token of appreciation for your hard work over the past few years.”
“Does this mean the company acknowledges that its previous actions were illegal?” Xiaomei asked calmly.
“We’re not saying that; we just hope both parties can reach a settlement,” the HR Manager’s voice lowered noticeably, clearly conceding.
Xiaomei knew she had won. The pressure from public opinion and the evidence she held were enough to make the company feel cornered; they were eager to quell the situation and did not want it to escalate further.
“Very well,” Xiaomei nodded. “However, I have one more request.”
“Please go ahead,” the HR Manager responded hastily.
“The company must compensate all laid-off employees according to the N+2 standard and publicly apologize, acknowledging the previous unfair compensation,” Xiaomei said firmly. She was not only fighting for her own rights but also seeking justice for her colleagues who had been laid off.
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line before the HR softly replied, “I will convey your demands to the company leadership.”
After hanging up, Xiaomei let out a long sigh of relief. She knew that the matter was not completely resolved, but she had taken the most crucial step.
A few days later, the company officially released a statement promising to compensate all laid-off employees according to the N+2 standard and to apologize to everyone. This announcement sparked widespread attention online, with many netizens expressing their anger at the company's actions, while Xiaomei and her colleagues emerged as victors in this struggle.
Zhang Xiaohu sent Xiaomei a brief message: “Master, we won.”
Xiaomei smiled, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. Although this battle had exhausted her, she had never given up or regretted her efforts.
She looked out the window; the autumn wind was still biting cold, but her heart felt an unprecedented warmth.
