Is this the Hua Nan Town from three hundred years ago?
Everything before her seemed not much different from Hua Nan Town three hundred years later. The streets were bustling with people, lively and vibrant.
The shops lined up neatly along the street, and various vendors shouted their wares, filling the air with their calls.
Suddenly, a furry creature pounced on Yue Keyan's neck from behind. Startled by the sudden attack, she shivered and jumped up in surprise.
However, as she did, her foot slipped, and with a loud "crack" at her ankle, she lost control and fell towards the ground.
In the dizzying spin, she caught sight of a grinning monkey face. The monkey seemed just as startled, flailing its four limbs in the air while scratching her back and shoulders, leaving her skin torn and bloody.
She crashed heavily to the ground, pain shooting through her body as tears instantly filled her eyes.
Just as she tried to struggle back to her feet, a sudden sharp pain struck the back of her head; that wretched monkey had sat back down on her.
"Miss, are you alright?" A hearty male voice rang out above her. Yue Keyan managed to lift her face with difficulty and saw a middle-aged man with a full beard standing in front of her.
In his arms was that troublesome monkey, which was still restless. Even though its limbs were restrained, it continued to struggle fiercely, emitting incessant "squeaks."
Seeing this, Yue Keyan let out a satisfied hum. "Serves it right."
The man looked a bit embarrassed, an apologetic smile spreading across his face. "I'm sorry for scaring you, miss."
"Oh, it's nothing, nothing at all." Yue Keyan got up from the ground and brushed off the dust from her clothes. "Big Brother, what are you doing bringing a monkey out with you?" She had only heard of keeping cats and dogs before; this was her first encounter with a monkey, and her curiosity was piqued.
The man patiently explained, "Miss, you must be visiting Hua Nan Town for the first time. My name is Zhang Kui'an, and I am the owner of the Yunqing Juggling Troupe here. This Wild Monkey was bought from a hunter not long ago. I originally intended to train it for performances, but unfortunately, it's very wild. Even after starving for several days, it wouldn't listen. Just now, when I wasn't paying attention, it broke out of its cage and escaped."
"I see," Yue Keyan said, suddenly enlightened. Then she remembered the purpose of her visit, and her expression turned urgent as she quickly asked Zhang Kui'an, "Big Brother, since you are a local, you must know someone named Lan Xibai?"
Before Zhang Kui'an could respond, the Wild Monkey in his arms began chattering loudly again, its voice sharp and frantic.
He stretched out his hand and pinched the monkey's mouth shut, forcing it to quiet down.
After thinking for a moment, Zhang Kui'an shook his head. "I don't know him, Miss. That surname isn't common in Hua Nan Town. Who is he to you?"
"Uh... he's my brother. I'm here to find my family," she replied.
Zhang Kui'an looked her up and down; she was covered in dust, and a hint of sympathy flashed in his eyes. He suddenly suggested, " Ms. Lan, since you're new here and might have trouble finding your brother right away, if you don't mind, our troupe has a few guest rooms. You could stay with us for a few days while I help make up for the trouble caused by this Wild Monkey."
From then on, Yue Keyan took on the alias "Lan Yu" and stayed with the juggling troupe under the pretense of searching for her family for nearly half a month.
Having grown up in a large courtyard and often mingling with people from all walks of life, she quickly became familiar with the various performers.
From the troupe leader Zhang Kui'an to Li Huotou's fat cat in the kitchen, everyone adored this clever little girl.
Only the Wild Monkey continued to make trouble for her; whether it was rushing at her during mealtime to snatch food or suddenly jumping onto her back when she wasn't paying attention and chattering away.
So everyone often witnessed this scene: the Ms. Lan Yu fiercely engaged in close combat with the Wild Monkey. After each fierce battle, the Ms. Lan Yu would be so angry that she couldn't eat for an entire day, while the Wild Monkey would be hung from a tree by Troupe Leader Zhang and left to starve for three days.
