Dark clouds rolled in, obscuring the sun like a colossal beast devouring the earth.
Flashes of lightning intermittently illuminated the world, as if striving to banish the evils that plagued it. Yet, these evils persisted, thriving in the dark corners of the human heart.
Thirty years ago, if Yang Beiguo and Yang Lao had not fallen victim to the treachery of Bian Jian and another person, their combined strength might have brought down the Giant Whale Lord. Perhaps his fate would have been different today.
The person carrying him moved swiftly, the howling wind and retreating trees resembling a backdrop that gradually faded away.
After a considerable time, the individual finally stopped and set Yang Lao down. Yang Lao saw Lu Fei Fan's familiar face, and as he had anticipated, his complexion flushed slightly. He grasped Lu Fei Fan's shoulder with his remaining hand.
"Zi..." He began to speak but was suddenly seized by a fit of coughing. "Cough cough..."
Lu Fei Fan pressed down on his shoulder, channeling soothing Pulse Energy into Yang Lao's body. The icy Pulse Flow invigorated Yang Lao, awakening his mind as waves of memories surged forth like an overwhelming tide.
"This... what is this..." he murmured, as if submerged underwater, surrounded by massive whales gliding through the air. One whale was so enormous it resembled a mountain!
A howl echoed—a sound reminiscent of some ancient beast, its sonic waves engulfing him.
Yang Lao steadied himself and muttered, "If it weren't for your fierce battle with another Ocean Lord that left you gravely injured back then, we might never have had the chance to kill you. You would not have fallen in this 'Misty Rain Forest' sea..."
The Giant Whale seemed to understand his words and responded with a series of guttural sounds. It could produce dozens of different calls, yet no one could decipher their communication. It was said that only humans who reached Peak Powerhouse could potentially converse with them.
Yang Lao's previously precarious state stabilized, and Lu Fei Fan released his grip. The underwater illusion receded from Yang Lao’s body like a receding tide.
Coughing lightly twice, Yang Lao looked at Lu Fei Fan and then at the surrounding forest. The dark clouds had gathered into a dense Lead Cloud above them, and he noticed flashes of Silver Lightning Serpent darting intermittently within it.
The rumbling thunder echoed from afar; this scene felt eerily familiar.
At that moment, Lu Fei Fan found himself facing an odd Ancient Sword that had followed him here. He was astonished; it hovered behind him like a pet that had just awakened its spirit.
Lu Fei Fan deliberately shifted to the left, and to his surprise, the Grooved Double-Edged Sword swiftly followed suit. Then, feeling playful, he began to circle left and right; the cumbersome Greatsword floated along with him in an amusing dance.
“Ha ha, this sword is quite fun!” Lu Fei Fan said, genuinely happy for once.
Yang Lao, at a loss for words, looked at him with a complex expression. Finally, he explained, “There’s not much time left. Bian Jian will definitely catch up soon, so I’ll keep it brief.”
Lu Fei Fan stopped playing with the sword and turned to Yang Lao, waiting for him to continue.
“Do you want to know the origin of this sword?” Yang Lao asked with a hint of mockery in his smile. “Bian Jian and Lian Chong Tang have both dreamed of obtaining this sword.”
“Oh?” Lu Fei Fan glanced at the sword hovering around him. It looked rather unremarkable and was covered in dust, giving it a somewhat shabby appearance.
“It’s called the Whale Devouring Sword, owned by one of the four kings of the Alliance Empire, the White King!” Yang Lao’s words were undoubtedly military secrets, yet he seemed indifferent, almost self-mocking. “The White King disappeared thirty years ago, and no one knows his whereabouts. However, he had a companion—a lord known as the Giant Whale!”
The Free Federation Military Intelligence Agency had spent a great deal of resources to lure this Giant Whale into the territory of another Deep Sea Lord in order to deal it a heavy blow. The ensuing battle attracted attention from all sides, but in the end, the Giant Whale emerged victorious. It entered the Free Federation and vanished, only to be accidentally encountered by me, Bian Jian, and Lian Chong Tang. We pursued it all the way here… The Giant Whale was severely injured, but none of us were its match.
Later on, it prepared to enter a state of dormancy to recover from its injuries. However, beasts coveted its body and unleashed thunderous attacks to kill it. Unwilling to become prey, it fought back against the beasts. Though they were heavily injured and fled, the Giant Whale also exhausted its strength and could not suppress its wounds. In its final moments, it used its own power to create barriers that isolated itself from the outside world; it fought desperately just to protect this sword!”
Yang Lao spoke lightly about it, but the struggle between lord-level beasts involved such power that even a slight movement could lead to destruction. Ordinary humans or beasts like them could not possibly participate; merely escaping unscathed was already fortunate.
“I see now why it’s called the Tomb of the Giant Whale. But why would it go so far as to protect this sword?” Lu Fei Fan was also curious. Why would a lord like the Giant Whale take on so many enemies for a human sword? This puzzled him greatly.
“Yes,” Yang Lao nodded firmly in affirmation of his deduction. “After being ambushed by Bian Jian and Lian Chong Tang, if I hadn’t been saved by the triggered barrier, I might have turned into a pile of bones long ago. After I was injured, I was weak for a long time. To survive, I ate everything I could find; at one point, I even considered gnawing on my own arm. Fortunately, I managed to pull through. Time passed year after year until the Giant Whale’s body merged with the earth and its barriers weakened. In the center of my cave, I discovered this sword; accurately speaking, this sword must have been inside its belly back then.”
“This sword is quite peculiar. I tried to take it earlier; Bian Jian also attempted to grab it but was rejected while it chose you instead!” Yang Lao remarked while looking at the sword. If he hadn’t been betrayed by his companions back then, perhaps this sword would have long since fallen into his hands.
“This sword looks… very ordinary,” Lu Fei Fan said subtly while examining it closely. Aside from its ability to float around on its own, its appearance was quite shabby; the blade was worn and probably wouldn’t cut anything anymore. It lacked any aura of a divine weapon.
Lu Fei Fan felt quite disdainful inside.
“It chose this place for a reason,” Yang Lao continued. “This is your opportunity; since it has chosen you, you are the one it has been waiting for. Just accept it!”
Lu Fei Fan grasped the sword tightly; as he did so, its floating power dissipated. A chilling consciousness slowly enveloped him. He felt coldness wash over him as if an illusion had suddenly descended upon him—images flashed in his mind of someone continuously guiding him in wielding the sword. A surge of immense power erupted within him; unable to contain himself any longer, he swung the sword with vigor as that image began to control his body. The icy intent formed from his concentrated will propelled him into the air!
“Jian Kai!”
A figure wielding a Greatsword transformed into a blur as it struck a tree, then vanished once more, only to reappear on the other side with a thud.
“Han Yue!”
The Greatsword in Lu Fei Fan's hand danced with the surging sword intent from his Consciousness.
“Tide Roar and Lightning Flash!”
As his figure flickered with the sword shadows, explosive sounds echoed in the air. In midair, he split into several afterimages, leaving Yang Lao bewildered and astonished.
“This... this movement technique...” Yang Lao couldn't quite grasp it, but he clearly sensed that this young man was vastly different from the Lu Fei Fan he had encountered before; it was as if he had undergone a tremendous transformation.
Lu Fei Fan suddenly halted. He felt that there was still sword intent left unexpressed, buried deep within his memories. Perhaps only when Lu Fei Fan fully integrated the previous sword techniques would they manifest naturally. After all, in the path of cultivation, haste makes waste; there are no shortcuts.
“Whew.” After executing those sword techniques, Lu Fei Fan felt a sense of power flowing through him, yet he also experienced an inexplicable sense of loss.
Yang Lao shook his head and criticized, “You only grasp the surface; you fail to comprehend its essence.”
Lu Fei Fan flipped and swung his Grooved Double-Edged Sword. The two blades, crafted by Bai Wang Dao years ago, exhibited an unusual style. If they were reforged with some additional materials, they would undoubtedly become an excellent weapon. Despite their peculiar design, they felt perfectly balanced in his hands.
Yang Lao's words prompted Lu Fei Fan to reflect once more on the sword techniques he had just executed. He nodded, acknowledging Yang Lao's advice.
At that moment, a loud bang!
“Heart!” Yang Lao shouted.
A large tree suddenly exploded. As splintered wood and leaves flew through the air, Bian Jian emerged with a gleaming sword that shone like a cannonball, gathering a curved blade of energy aimed directly at Lu Fei Fan!
Lu Fei Fan swung his Whale Devouring Sword downwards with force. Bang!
Lu Fei Fan's body erupted with an invisible, astonishing force that shook the air like a sudden gust of wind!
Bian Jian, holding his sword, staggered back several steps, staring in shock at Lu Fei Fan.
Lu Fei Fan was equally astonished. When did he become this strong? What had happened inside that cocoon?
"You didn't die! Hmph, it seems you are the thing from that cocoon?" Bian Jian coldly regarded Lu Fei Fan, clearly having guessed the truth.
"In this world, there are always those who refuse to respect their elders!" Lu Fei Fan swung the Whale Devouring Sword, but it made a cracking sound as if it were about to break.
At first, Bian Jian was furious when he saw Lu Fei Fan wielding the Whale Devouring Sword. Unable to contain himself, he launched an attack intending to kill Lu Fei Fan. However, he never expected that his strike, which contained eighty percent of his power, would be met without any movement from Lu Fei Fan. Instead, Lu Fei Fan unleashed a vast and ancient power that stirred something deep within Bian Jian's heart.
The Whale Devouring Sword emitted a sound of shattering, surprising Bian Jian. Then he burst into laughter. If he couldn't have it, neither could anyone else. It seemed this sword was not some divine weapon after all; it had shattered after just one clash with him. The thought of others being unable to possess it brought him great relief.
"It seems it has been sealed away for too long and has turned into scrap metal," Bian Jian mocked as he looked at the Whale Devouring Sword in Lu Fei Fan's hand.
Lu Fei Fan held the sword, initially contemplating reforging it, but he was taken aback by its fragility. After just one clash, cracks began to appear along the blade's surface, spreading like intricate patterns and producing faint sounds of breaking.
Inside, Lu Fei Fan felt a pang of regret. This legendary weapon had only just come into his possession; how could it break so soon?
