Upon hearing this, everyone waited for Suma to respond.
"I don't know," Suma shook his head. "I suppose he has left."
Lu Fei Fan made a sound of acknowledgment but did not press further. He was reminded of Shui Que, someone who had fought alongside them; it was hard to forget a strong ally with such a deep connection.
"I feel something is off here, so I suggest we leave this place sooner rather than later," Suma said, sensing an underlying unease in the atmosphere.
"Are you just being paranoid?" Jiu Ye chuckled, still lost in his dreams of wealth.
At that moment, voices from outside the door interrupted them.
"Is the captain of the Fei Hu Battle Team present?"
Ma Dui stepped outside and saw several guards dressed in dark green uniforms standing at the entrance. Their attire was distinct from that of the Expeditionary Force and the Skeleton Legion, indicating they belonged to a special unit.
"The situation is this: our commander, Colonel Lancer, would like to see you," one of the guards said politely.
"Alright, I'll head over shortly," Ma Dui replied.
After the guard finished speaking, he led his team away.
"Lancer?" Da Fu Ge asked, hearing that name for the first time.
Suma seemed to want to say something but held back.
"You all stay here. I'll go meet with Lancer. If things seem difficult, I'll come back and we can leave," Ma Dui said as he started to walk away but suddenly turned back. "Suma."
"Yes?" Suma looked up, caught in his thoughts.
“Once this matter is settled, come to our Special Operations Team. Once you've recruited enough members, you can return to your Special Operations Team.”
Suma froze for a moment before finally nodding in agreement.
Ma walked out with a smile. Some things didn’t require Suma to understand personally; he could grasp them just fine.
He arrived at the office of Ren Dongchuan, which was still heavily guarded. However, the situation had changed drastically. Thinking about how Ren Dongchuan had painstakingly managed the base for over a decade, only to end up with it being taken over by others, was disheartening. Although their interactions had often ended unpleasantly, at least Ren had treated the members of the Special Operations Team fairly. Unlike many other bases that would find various excuses to cut corners on the rewards from the Free Federation’s bounties, this was why mercenaries favored this island base.
Ma adjusted his attire and followed the guard up the stairs to the second-floor office.
Colonel Lancer, a middle-aged man with a full white beard and short hair, stood by the glass window of the office, his back turned to Ma. The burly man who had accompanied Ma earlier was nowhere to be seen.
“Oh, Captain Ma, please take a seat,” Lancer said as he turned around, gesturing graciously for him to sit.
“Hello, Colonel Lancer,” Ma replied as he settled into a chair.
“The reason I asked you to come is to understand the details of your previous mission and… the situation where you were surrounded by those beasts. Could you elaborate for us?” Lancer spoke candidly, like a sharp-eyed eagle, making it hard for anyone to feel at ease.
“Of course.” Ma didn’t hold back; there was nothing to conceal. He recounted how he took over the mission and how they were ambushed by beasts while trying to rescue people. However, he omitted details about their encounter with the indigenous people digging in the Tomb and how his teammate Lu Fei Fan ended up with a large haul of treasures.
After listening attentively, Lancer nodded. “So, according to you, once you entered the encirclement, those beasts attacked you relentlessly?”
Ma reflected for a moment before responding, “Yes, that’s correct.”
“Good. Thank you for providing such detailed information,” Lancer said politely as he stood up to shake Ma’s hand.
Ma stood as well and shook hands with him. Was that it? Such information could easily have been gathered by sending someone else to inquire.
“By the way, I have an unusual request,” Colonel Lancer said politely.
The Captain felt a jolt in his heart; this unusual request was likely the true reason for the invitation.
“Please go ahead, Colonel Lancer,” the Captain replied with a smile, maintaining his composure.
“I would like to ask you to take us back to the ambush site,” Lancer stated.
The Captain's expression changed slightly. He didn’t understand why Lancer would make such a request, and he had no desire to return.
“Colonel Lancer, when we were ambushed, the base didn’t provide us with any support. It was my team who fought desperately to get us out of there,” the Captain said seriously, looking directly at Lancer.
“I know,” Colonel Lancer nodded. “That’s why Ren Dongchuan has been reassigned to another area. This place is temporarily under my command. However, a new base commander will be assigned here soon. If you could help me with this request, I might consider recommending you for the position of commander here.”
Lancer exuded a calm authority, appearing unhurried as he patiently awaited the Captain's response.
“I’m sorry, Colonel Lancer, but I promised my team that I would personally ensure their safe return home. Therefore, I cannot agree to your request,” the Captain firmly declined.
Lancer feigned disappointment, nodding as if it were expected.
“What a pity; I thought we could work well together,” Lancer said with a hint of regret.
“I truly apologize for disappointing you,” the Captain replied and turned to leave.
Lancer did not stop him but instead turned to gaze out at the Gobi Desert gradually bathed in sunlight.
“What a disappointing place,” he murmured softly.
After the cavalry refused Lancer's request, the first thought that surged in his mind as he descended the stairs was not curiosity or a desire to leave, but danger.
He felt that Lancer was an inscrutable person, and he disliked dealing with someone like that. It made him uncomfortable, much like dealing with an Old Fox. He would rather face an enemy in a life-and-death struggle than confront someone whose intentions he could not discern.
Determined, he decided to have his team pack up and leave this place as soon as possible. He had a nagging feeling that he and his team were caught in a massive whirlpool.
However, just as he stepped out of the office building, several fully armed soldiers surrounded him. Before he could react, someone from the building fired a Plasma Bullet that struck him. The buzzing sound and the intense muscle tremors overwhelmed him with a numbing sensation.
He fell to the ground, trying to struggle, but the burly men who had surrounded him delivered a punch that knocked out the last remnants of his consciousness.
In the barracks, members of the Fei Hu Battle Team remained calm, unaware of what had happened to their captain.
As time passed and their captain still hadn’t returned, they noticed the sun was already high in the sky.
"Why has the captain been gone so long?" Lu Fei Fan felt something was off.
"I'm curious about this," Cai Bi suddenly interjected.
"Curious about what?" Jiu Ye asked while cleaning his Rocket Launcher and Machine Gun.
"The hospital beds in the Battlefield Hospital are empty except for the doctors. Not a single patient is left," Cai Bi began to sense something was amiss.
"Were they all sent away?" Jiu Ye pondered for a moment.
"I saw them transporting injured soldiers before I left," Lu Fei Fan recalled. They had indeed encountered a Beast Tide, and Ren Dongchuan had sent all the injured back. But when they returned, hadn’t there just been a battle outside? Wasn’t anyone hurt?
Was there really a battle with zero casualties? That seems a bit too miraculous, doesn't it?
"Wait," Suma suddenly recalled something. "I remember seeing the equipment area was sealed off when we parked."
"The equipment area?" Lu Fei Fan thought for a moment. "Wasn't that previously occupied by Berg and his crew for their machines?"
It was strange; why would they seal off that area?
Deciding to investigate, Lu Fei Fan, along with Da Fu and Suma, headed out to take a look.
Sure enough, on the other side of the base camp, the equipment area—originally meant for artillery and ballistic missiles—was now guarded by soldiers. Berg had placed Tang Kede's peculiar equipment there, and no one was allowed in, not even a fly.
"Look, those instruments seem like they haven't been moved yet," Lu Fei Fan pointed at some large equipment covered with tarps. It was hard to believe that Berg would leave such important instruments here for Lancer's people to take over.
"Let's leave as soon as the captain returns," Lu Fei Fan suggested, sensing something was off about the place.
The three of them split up to observe the camp further before returning to Camp.
Da Fu glanced at the time; it had been over four hours, and the cavalry still hadn't returned!
Da Fu Ge paced back and forth while everyone waited anxiously.
"We can't wait any longer. Let's pack up; I’ll go find him," Da Fu Ge commanded.
"No," Lu Fei Fan objected. "If we all go together now, we probably won't make it. Let's wait until dark, then sneak out through the back door and figure out how to steal a vehicle."
"Alright," Da Fu Ge conceded, realizing that Lu Fei Fan's suggestion was indeed more prudent.
“Then let’s stay at the Camp for now and wait for Hei to take action. There’s no need for everyone to scatter,” Da Fu Ge said.
As dusk gradually turned into darkness, several individuals on the Watchtower continued to observe the entrance of the Fei Hu Battle Team's Camp.
A voice came through the communicator, inquiring about the situation.
“Do you have any updates from your side?”
The lookout picked up his binoculars and scanned the Camp entrance. Two hours earlier, someone had gone to the dining area to collect dinner, but since then, no one from the Fei Hu Battle Team had come out.
“Report: there’s been no movement; everything is very calm.”
“Good. If they show any signs of activity, remember to shoot without hesitation!” a decisive command came from inside.
“Understood.” The captain on duty immediately alerted those lying in ambush around them to stay vigilant and be ready to fire if there was any movement from inside.
However, they did not anticipate that at this moment, all members of the Fei Hu Battle Team were quietly making their way through the base buildings with their luggage. Each time a searchlight swept by, Lu Fei Fan led the team through the area, finally arriving at a less guarded spot behind the base. Jia Jia and Jiu Ye took out wire cutters and snipped open the protective netting, allowing everyone to sneak out.
The searchlights occasionally passed over their location, but they did not detect anything unusual.
