Tang Kede explained Ren Dongchuan's confusion, "Hehe, this guy's Military Combat Technique is far superior to your soldiers!"
Ren Dongchuan took another careful look at Lu Fei Fan, who was locked in a life-and-death struggle with the Scythe Beetle. The Knife Technique he was using was indeed a Military Combat Technique, but the erratic footwork was something he had never seen before.
"He also knows the Nine Palace Steps; that's quite interesting," Berg seemed to show a bit of interest in Lu Fei Fan. However, he quickly shifted his focus back to the overall battlefield situation.
The defense battle at the base was fierce and intense. He felt fortunate that he had begun deploying defenses as soon as he settled in this base. Thanks to the well-prepared fortifications and firepower, although the defensive line appeared to be wavering at times, it was still holding up against the onslaught. As for his calmness that left Ren Dongchuan puzzled, it was because he still had a few trump cards up his sleeve.
"The eastern front is collapsing! Requesting reinforcements!" a communications officer hurriedly reported.
"Deploy the reserve team, Third Company!" Berg issued the order with a stoic expression.
"Understood!"
"Requesting support from the west!"
"Send in Second Company!"
"Yes!"
"The South has suffered heavy casualties... The defensive positions are no longer responding."
Berg narrowed his eyes and waved his hand, "Send in First Company!"
After a while, the communicator indeed brought back bad news.
"Commander, the northern front..." the communicator trailed off and reluctantly returned to his position.
"I'll go!" Ren Dongchuan exclaimed as he removed his military cap, unbuttoned his collar, and grabbed a standard Energy Rifle before heading out.
Rather than endure the torment of listening to various reports here, he preferred to charge out and fight fiercely. The command room was unusually quiet, so quiet that they could clearly hear Ren Dongchuan's voice calling out from the entrance.
"Guard team! Follow me!"
Ren Dongchuan led his guard team upstairs, but the situation on the battlefield remained grim. The number of Cockroach Beetles was continuously increasing, and the Human Air Defense Artillery and Machine Guns were unable to keep up. Ballistic Missiles couldn't be launched in time to strike the Mother Bug; they exploded mid-air, causing casualties mostly among the ordinary Cockroach Beetles.
On the ground, the Scythe Beetles were specifically searching for weaknesses in the base's defenses and launched frenzied attacks. They moved in an orderly fashion, advancing and retreating strategically, resembling a well-disciplined army.
"Can we request reinforcements from the port?" Berg suddenly asked the Communicator.
"Commander, communications have been cut off. The situation at the port is unclear; it seems they have also come under attack," the Communicator reported immediately.
"It looks like we've encountered a formidable opponent this time!" Berg said as he gazed at the electronic simulation display, noting that the heat levels around the base were continuously rising.
"Heh heh, do we need to deploy my 'pets'? They've become much more obedient after four or five rounds of elimination," Tang Kede said confidently.
"Doctor, I feel like we've been set up," Berg suddenly remarked. "This attack on our base is clearly premeditated. How could such a large Beast Horde appear around us without us knowing?"
"The sandstorm has obstructed our radar, and it seems they've found a way to shield themselves from infrared detection. This is definitely a major discovery; it can be added to my research agenda," Tang Kede replied, seemingly unconcerned about the external battle, focusing instead on his own pursuits.
"If there are no reinforcements coming, our defense operation will be very passive..." Berg said. "You all think of a solution."
Berg tossed the responsibility to several officers, urging them to devise countermeasures.
Suddenly, the door to the command room was slammed open, and a blood-soaked soldier stood at the entrance!
“What’s going on?” an officer asked.
“South has fallen!” the soldier exclaimed before collapsing to the ground, a smoking hole in his back where acid had eaten through.
Berg waved his hand, signaling for the body to be dragged away.
“Wasn’t the South defense line just reinforced? What happened? Go check it out!” Berg asked, a hint of anger in his voice.
An officer immediately ran out and returned a moment later.
“Sir! You need to come see this!”
Berg stepped outside with his men. At the entrance, two bloodied soldiers dragged back a corpse—it was the body of a Scythe Beetle!
Tang Kede pushed through the crowd and quickly examined it, feeling the skin of the creature. He stood up in shock.
“It’s evolving!”
“What?” Berg was momentarily taken aback.
“They are evolving!” Tang Kede shouted, snatching a soldier's pistol and firing several shots into the lifeless body of a Ground Death Scythe.
The bullets ricocheted off the Scythe Beetle's body!
“Did you see that? They’ve started to increase their defense against bullets!” Tang Kede tossed the pistol back to the soldier.
Berg was at a loss for words. The Scythe Beetle had evolved to be bulletproof… Could this be why his reserve battalion had completely lost South in less than ten minutes?
He stepped forward in disbelief, drawing his sword. With a sharp sound, he exerted all his strength to drive the sword into the corpse of the Scythe Beetle.
"Does the base still have a reserve team?" Berg asked as he withdrew his sword and took a step back, turning to face the group of officers behind him.
The officers exchanged glances, and one brave soul stepped forward to report, "No, only your personal guard remains."
"Then let them go!" Berg said decisively before turning to enter the command room.
"But..." the officer hesitated, thinking that if the base's defenses collapsed, they would at least need some troops to break through during a retreat. Sending his personal guard into battle would mean sharing the fate of the base. After a moment, a soldier rushed into the command room with an anxious expression.
However, the officer had no time for further discussion and turned to lead his troops up.
Moments later, another soldier burst into the command room, and immediately Berg's voice filled the air with anger.
"What? What are you doing? Why didn't you keep an eye on her?"
After a while, Berg changed into a combat vest and picked up an Energy Rifle, preparing to head out. He turned to a Captain and Tang Kede at the door.
"The base is temporarily under your command!"
With that, he took several officers with him to the front lines.
Tang Kede stroked his chin and summoned a research assistant, giving some instructions before standing in the command room, watching the situation on the screen with an overly optimistic demeanor.
The sounds of gunfire continued from the base, but the defense lines were steadily retreating. The four defensive fronts had already fallen back to their last line of defense, with the remaining soldiers engaged in desperate combat against these monsters.
What was even more alarming was that these creatures had been able to withstand artillery fire just half an hour ago. Gradually, Lu Fei Fan realized that these Fellows could take several shots before going down!
These creatures are evolving!
This was Lu Fei Fan's first impression, and they were producing at an alarming efficiency, as if there were a biochemical factory not far from the base. It was a rather terrifying feeling.
Two of Suma's team members had died due to carelessness. The Scythe Beetles charged forward, and despite fierce gunfire, they were not completely exterminated. Suma watched as one of the Scythe Armored Beasts drove its Death Scythe into a teammate's chest. He pulled out his Zhan Dao and rushed forward, severing its head, but it did nothing to save his fallen comrade.
Another female team member died trying to save Suma. A Cockroach Beetle coalesced in the air into a black dragon, swooping down. Suma nearly got swept away but was pushed aside by his teammate at the last moment. That female team member, along with several soldiers, was caught up in the chaos, and the self-destructing Cockroach Beetles exploded, showering them in blood.
The combat personnel at the defensive position were continuously losing members. Lu Fei Fan maneuvered along the front lines; Silver Sparrow had already been used countless times, its blade coated with a layer of dark gray substance that was corroding it. If it weren't for Lu Fei Fan periodically infusing Pulse Energy to burn off that material, Silver Sparrow would have been rendered useless long ago.
On the other hand, he found himself fond of the Lie Hound's bullets because its large-caliber rounds could almost pierce a Scythe Armored Beast with a single shot!
However, he had long run out of ammunition and could only engage in close combat now. The Cockroach Beetles posed little threat; Lu Fei Fan had narrowly avoided their self-destruct attacks several times using Nine Palace Steps, but the surrounding soldiers were not so fortunate.
Initially, these Cockroach Beetles did not self-destruct; they only charged and bit at people. Now they were actually exploding!
This was clearly another sign of evolution. The more Lu Fei Fan thought about it, the more terrifying it became. These fellows were continuously adjusting their evolution against humanity, gradually eroding human advantages until they were no longer on the same level of combat.
Just as Lu Fei Fan and Suma were struggling, the Beast Nest reappeared!
The remaining Beast Nests released ground-crawling beetles that burrowed into the sand, rolling and drilling toward people's feet before launching themselves upward, slicing individuals in half or shortening their limbs.
"Watch out for those burrowing beetles beneath your feet!"
Lu Fei Fan shouted as he plunged Silver Sparrow into the ground. A beetle that failed to take off in time was impaled by Lu Fei Fan!
But more ground beetles surged forth—four or five at once. Lu Fei Fan swept his blade across them; several burrowing beetles exploded mid-air, their viscera splattering down. Suma picked up a few guns and unleashed a barrage at the ground, taking down many of the incoming beetles that emerged from the sand. The rolling Cockroach Beetles once again formed into a black dragon, surging toward the dwindling number of soldiers on the front line.
Lu Fei Fan grabbed a Heavy Energy Machine Gun, unleashing a barrage of Light Bullets upon the dark mass of the Swarm, continuously knocking down Insects. Yet, the relentless tide of beetles showed no signs of diminishing.
They roared as they charged towards Lu Fei Fan. Suma picked up several Hand Grenades and hurled them into the fray, and Lu Fei Fan took the opportunity to detonate them!
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The explosion engulfed a cluster of Cockroach Beetles in a brilliant flash, but the Cockroach Beetles quickly regrouped and swooped down towards Lu Fei Fan on the Ground!
"Run!"
Once Lu Fei Fan's ammunition ran dry, he and Suma sprinted away. Many soldiers, witnessing the terrifying scene, turned and fled into the buildings!
As Lu Fei Fan and Suma raced for safety, the roaring Cockroach Beetles surged forward like a raging dragon towards the Ground!
No matter how fast they ran, they couldn't match the speed of the winged flying beetles. Suma attempted to turn back and shoot, but Lu Fei Fan dragged him along, ignoring everything else as they dashed towards the cluster of buildings.
At that moment, from within a nearby structure, a figure soared into the air, boldly confronting the rampaging Swarm!
