The sun blazed fiercely as Lu Fei Fan drove one of the off-road vehicles, speeding across the desolate expanse of the Gobi. The rugged terrain caused the vehicle to jolt violently, and he occasionally glanced at Da Biao, who lay motionless in the back seat, secured by straps. His complexion was far from good.
Cai Bi reminded himself that he needed to get Da Biao to the base within eight hours. If Da Biao showed any signs of distress on the way, he would have to administer a strong serum immediately. This was one of the few serums available in the Fei Hu Team, and it came at a steep price—five hundred thousand per vial. Generally, during missions, the captain would only allow Cai Bi to purchase three vials.
In addition, the captain had instructed Jia Jia to fill up the vehicle's gas tank and prepare an extra barrel in the back. He also provided Lu Fei Fan with a fully loaded Energy Submachine Gun and a box of Energy Grenades that Lu Fei Fan had requested.
Initially, the team considered equipping Lu Fei Fan with an additional box of ammunition, but he declined. After all, while the Special Operations Team had sufficient Hand Grenades for their mission, they had already used some along the way. Furthermore, they had yet to encounter any Thunderfang Wolves, and Lu Fei Fan felt it would be better to leave extra ammunition for the team.
Lu Fei Fan wore a communication watch to maintain constant contact with his team. The vehicle was equipped with a Data Analysis System for navigation, and they were retracing their route without encountering any immediate dangers.
“Wild Fox, how’s your situation?” came a call from the team through the communication watch.
Lu Fei Fan checked the time; it was already time for their scheduled contact after forty minutes. Unbeknownst to him, he had been driving for two hours. Aside from the endless gravel of the Gobi, there was nothing in sight. According to Da Fu Ge’s calculations on the map, if he kept driving without stopping, he could reach the base before dawn.
“Everything is normal,” Lu Fei Fan replied by pressing a button on his communication watch.
“How is Lame Fox?” The team continued to inquire.
“He's hibernating; no abnormalities,” Lu Fei Fan answered while glancing at Da Biao in the back seat.
“Good. Stay safe and contact us immediately if anything happens,” the team instructed.
“Understood,” Lu Fei Fan replied before cutting off communication. The journey to the base was still long, and he needed to conserve his energy for navigating the rough terrain ahead.
The scenery along the way remained as desolate as when he first arrived. Occasionally, wild beasts would appear on the Gobi; upon seeing Lu Fei Fan's sturdy off-road vehicle speeding by, they quickly scurried away.
The sound of Lu Fei Fan's engine was enough to send even the most alert animals fleeing.
As he drove nearly halfway through his journey, daylight began to fade into dusk. While navigating through a series of hills, a sudden gunshot caught his attention. He quickly grabbed his Submachine Gun and ensured that his Lie Hound was within reach.
The sound of gunfire echoed from the other side of the hills, mixed with explosions. Suddenly, an off-road vehicle burst out from the right side of the hills. It was a common model used by the Free Federation, powerful and adorned with green spray paint. Inside were three people: one driving and two others firing automatic weapons desperately at their pursuers behind them.
Bullets whizzed through the air, exploding between the hills. Through the gaps, one could see another heavily modified off-road vehicle following closely behind. Its front was decorated with numerous iron spikes resembling fangs, and the entire body was adorned with menacing decorations such as beast bones and fangs.
Compared to the fleeing vehicle of the Free Federation, this one looked like a steel beast. It carried four people and was equipped with a Huo Xiao-style rotating multi-barrel energy machine gun.
The others wielded various submachine guns, firing at the first off-road vehicle.
The two vehicles chased each other across the Gobi Desert. Lu Fei Fan, trailing behind, had to slow down to avoid getting caught in their chaotic pursuit. He intended to maneuver around them, but the erratic movements of the chasing vehicle made it impossible to predict its path. Lu Fei Fan could only keep his distance and look for an opportunity to escape this inexplicable battlefield.
Although he was behind them, Lu Fei Fan had a clear view of the two vehicles ahead.
The driver of the leading vehicle displayed impressive driving skills, swerving left and right to evade shots from the pursuing beast-like vehicle. Despite its overwhelming firepower, the two occupants of the front vehicle managed to find openings to counterattack.
Both their shooting and evasive maneuvers were exemplary of Free Federation Army standards.
It was evident that the front vehicle was affiliated with the Free Federation military, but why were they being pursued by that menacing vehicle?
With this question in mind, Lu Fei Fan followed closely behind, staying out of their firing range. It seemed they had noticed him as well; however, since he showed no intention of joining either side's fight, they continued their exchange of fire while temporarily ignoring this unexpected intruder.
Despite their high tactical proficiency and evasive maneuvers, the firepower from the pursuing vehicle's Huo Xiao energy multi-barrel machine gun was a devastating weapon on the Gobi. The front vehicle tried its best to dodge but still got hit in the rear by a barrage of bullets, causing it to explode into pieces.
Due to terrain constraints—the area was not open but filled with hills—the vehicles faced significant mobility limitations while weaving through them. The sweeping fire from the Huo Xiao machine gun acted like a whip, striking again at the rear of the leading vehicle.
The already battered vehicle flipped over violently after crashing into a stone pillar on one of the hills, erupting in flames and smoke.
The beast-like vehicle screeched to a halt. Two individuals armed with submachine guns rushed toward the burning wreckage and opened fire on a figure crawling out from inside, mercilessly shooting him down.
Sitting in the driver's seat was a man with totem tattoos, sporting a long ponytail. His hair was tied into three braids with metal rings, and his face wore a grim expression as he signaled for the team members who had finished inspecting the scene to get in the car.
The team members quickly jumped into the vehicle, and the leader in the driver's seat immediately started the engine, pressing down on the accelerator as they sped off in pursuit of the vehicles behind them.
At that moment, Lu Fei Fan was already speeding ahead, pushing the gas pedal to its limit. He knew that regardless of which of the two cars won, they would turn around and come after him first.
So, as soon as they decided the outcome, Lu Fei Fan floored the accelerator and overtook both of them.
Sure enough, after that beast-like vehicle took care of the previous car, it locked onto Lu Fei Fan like a predator stalking its prey and quickly closed in.
In the wilderness, the heavy smell of gasoline mixed with the roar of engines and tire tracks provided clear clues for the pursuing vehicles.
The beastly car was only a kilometer or two behind Lu Fei Fan. Even after he managed to create some distance, it was not a significant problem for the leader of the pursuing vehicle.
Originally, he watched with amusement as the fleeing car sped away, unable to suppress a smile. In this day and age, aside from being good at escaping, people seemed utterly useless.
Did he really think he could shake off someone known as the 'Crazy Horse' of the wilderness with just this little distance?
However, when he attempted to close in on Lu Fei Fan's car, he found that his opponent maintained the same distance he had just been at. Realizing this, Crazy Horse felt a twinge of surprise and began to wonder if he had been too careless.
So he focused intently on driving and closed in further.
As they approached within a hundred meters, those wearing strange clothing in Crazy Horse's vehicle began firing at Lu Fei Fan. The team members were similar to Crazy Horse; their faces, arms, and bodies were covered in tattoos as they shouted words Lu Fei Fan couldn't understand.
From Lu Fei Fan's perspective, it seemed like some sort of indigenous language. Clearly, these people were not from the Free Federation; they might very well be part of an Indigenous Squad. Outside of the Free Federation's Fallen Zone, there were countless forces not under its jurisdiction. With Fusers awakening among indigenous people, it was only natural for them to form their own Special Operations Teams to hunt for resource trading opportunities. Where there was trade, there would be conflict.
Yet Lu Fei Fan never expected his luck would lead him to be targeted by an Indigenous Squad.
The firepower was fierce, with the Energy Bullets from the Hot Weapons shooting out like waves of heat, passing around Lu Fei Fan's vehicle and landing on the surrounding soil of the Hills, kicking up large clouds of dust.
However, Lu Fei Fan's driving skills gave Crazy Horse a new perspective. He had never seen anyone maintain their vehicle at such extreme speeds while skillfully drifting between the Hills, making Huo Xiao's shots repeatedly miss their target.
After two or three bursts of fire, Huo Xiao ceased fire. Lu Fei Fan glanced at the rearview mirror to assess the vehicles behind him and deduced that they were likely out of ammunition.
Lu Fei Fan reached for a Hand Grenade, biting off the Safety Ring of two grenades and quietly placing them outside the vehicle without drawing attention.
In just a few seconds, the vehicles behind had closed in on him at full speed, and the Hand Grenades he dropped would be enough to give them a surprise.
However, Crazy Horse's sharp eyes and focused attention caught sight of what his opponent had thrown outside. With a sudden alertness, he jerked the steering wheel hard to avoid that direction, but the vehicle's momentum still brought him closer to where Lu Fei Fan had tossed the objects.
Suddenly, just a few meters beside the car—boom!
Two violent explosions erupted, and the shockwave caused the entire vehicle to tilt precariously, nearly flipping over. Fortunately, Crazy Horse's exceptional skills allowed him to regain control just in time. However, two of his teammates who weren't holding on tightly were thrown from their seats and lay on the ground unresponsive, leaving their fate uncertain.
Crazy Horse halted the vehicle and instructed the other two to check on their teammates' injuries. He turned back to look at the vehicle ahead; it was already disappearing into the sunset amidst swirling dust.
Frustrated and annoyed, Crazy Horse slammed his fist down on the dashboard.
