"First and foremost, safety is paramount," Da Biao interjected from the side.
Fu Qinqin, annoyed, kicked Da Biao away. He quickly dodged and raised his hands in surrender as he left.
"Yes, staying alive is our priority. I don't know if you have any family, and frankly, I don't care. Anyway, the captain's rule is that every team member must return safely," Fu Qinqin recited this line as if it were second nature, clearly having heard it repeated often by the captain.
"Secondly, monsters have levels," Fu Qinqin said, crossing her arms and holding up three fingers. "Ordinary Wild Beasts are ranked from level one to ten. Above that are Special Class monsters, and then there are the top-tier ones."
"I see," Lu Fei Fan nodded, quietly taking notes. In this world, it turned out that not only the Human World had a hierarchy of strength; even monsters had their classifications.
"Exactly, just like us humans. Newbies, veterans, then elites and Generals; each title is divided into levels one to three: Special Class and top-tier. After all, measuring the power of something always requires a quantifier unless you have already surpassed those levels yourself," Fu Qinqin said thoughtfully for once.
"Thanks," Lu Fei Fan replied with a nod of gratitude.
"No need to thank me. If you drag us down in the desert, I won't hesitate to leave you behind or... take you out!" Fu Qinqin turned around and made a gun gesture aimed at Lu Fei Fan.
"Don't worry; if I do hold you back, I definitely won't drag you down with me," Lu Fei Fan said confidently, though inwardly he thought that when the time came, it might be unclear who would be dragging whom down. We'll see about that.
Just as Lu Fei Fan was preparing to take a good rest, an announcement echoed through the base.
"All Special Operations Team leaders report to the Operations Hall for a meeting."
Upon hearing the announcement, everyone resting in the camp seemed familiar with this routine process and exchanged knowing smiles.
"We're really lucky to catch a mission briefing from the base," Jiu Ye scratched his head, seemingly incredulous about his Special Operations Team's good fortune.
"Sometimes luck is also a part of strength," Da Biao said proudly.
"Extraordinary! Do you want to see how the base issues bounty missions?" Cai Bi approached and patted Lu Fei Fan on the shoulder, looking as if he was teasing him.
"Alright, alright. Stop messing with him. Lao Ma, let him go and see the world," Da Fu Ge called out to the horse team.
"Let's go." The horse team waved, signaling Lu Fei Fan to follow.
"Huahua, help me check if Bauhinia Squad is around, and say hello to their captain for me," Cai Bi said with a sly wave of his hand, a meaningful expression on his face.
Suddenly, everyone started to make a ruckus, leaving Lu Fei Fan confused. He wanted to ask the horse team something, but they were acting mysterious.
"You'll find out soon enough."
Lu Fei Fan could only chuckle and follow along.
After the announcement, it wasn't just the Fei Hu Battle Team; several other Special Operations Teams that had arrived at the base were also heading toward the largest building. As they got closer, Lu Fei Fan realized that this base had originally been a cinema. The building's exterior was covered in scars and decay, with dark red dried bloodstains, bullet holes, and claw marks surrounding it.
It was evident that when this base was established, the intensity of the battles far exceeded anyone's imagination. The fact that this base could take root here likely came at an extremely heavy cost in bloodshed.
Upon entering the building that had been converted from a cinema into the Command Hall, everyone found a place to sit. Many people greeted each other during the gathering, and the horse team was among them.
"Hey, Lao Ma, you're still alive?"
"Haha, you're doing well too!"
"That kid has been quite impressive lately, completing several bounty missions beautifully."
"Is there a master helping him in the team?"
"Hey, is that the new rookie from your team over there? Haha, how cute."
These were the greetings of old acquaintances, along with the disdainful remarks from rivals of the Horse Team.
"Hmph, if you try to snatch missions from me again this time, I won't hold back."
"Ma Dapao! We still haven't settled the score from last time."
"Damn it, last time it was probably your Fei Hu Battle Team that ambushed us!" A short middle-aged man angrily drew his gun, ready to confront the Horse Team.
Lu Fei Fan placed a hand on the 'Lie Hound' strapped to his waist, seemingly prepared to act first if a conflict broke out.
"Sun Xingcai, don't accuse us without evidence; that could get someone killed." The Horse Team leader looked at the short but fierce-looking middle-aged man.
"You’re talking nonsense! Who else could it be? Isn’t it just because we took half your cargo last time?" Sun Xingcai seemed very agitated.
"Sun Xingcai, this is a base. Are you really going to start something here?" A loud female voice interrupted.
Everyone turned to see a short woman with an impressive demeanor, dressed in a combat camouflage uniform without any rank insignia.
"That's the captain of Bauhinia Squad, Suma," the Horse Team leader whispered to Lu Fei Fan.
“Suma! Are you really that close to Ma Dapao? It seems like you two have something going on!” Sun Xingcai mocked, her words sharp as bullets.
Suma stood up, her military shorts revealing a flash of pale thigh as she kicked the chair in front of her.
“Sun Xingcai, watch your words!”
“What’s wrong? Did I hit a nerve? Getting anxious so soon, huh? Oh, pulling out your gun! Come on then!”
In her agitation, Suma reached for her gun, but fortunately, two of her team members quickly restrained her. The other team members joined in the fray, some cheering, some trying to mediate, while others sat quietly in the corner, watching the spectacle unfold.
There were also quite a few people standing by the cavalry side.
“Ahem.” At that moment, a cough interrupted them. “What’s going on here?”
A middle-aged man with a white beard, dressed in Federal Expeditionary Force uniform, stood at the podium. His serious demeanor commanded attention as he surveyed the scene. Lu Fei Fan noticed the insignia on his shoulder—he was a Colonel!
Behind him stood two composed and mature Majors.
The arguing hall fell silent instantly; they glared at each other before settling down quietly.
“If you don’t regard me, Ren Dongchuan, as your base commander, go ahead. I can give you the chance to challenge my authority,” Ren Dongchuan coldly scanned the selfish Mercenary Special Operations Team. If it weren’t for the military might of the Free Federation, this internal conflict among humans would have already led to the downfall of this base.
“I’ll reiterate: anyone who dares to violate regulations and laws within my jurisdiction will find their Special Operations Team cut off from supplies and safety in my base.” Ren Dongchuan made his stance clear—if there were any fights or brawls within the base, everyone involved would be expelled.
Seeing no one daring to voice dissent, Ren Dongchuan waved his hand for his subordinates to begin distributing documents.
"One primary mission, eight secondary missions, six third-level missions, and five special missions!" Ren Dongchuan stated succinctly, getting straight to the point.
"First, this special mission is not simple. You all need to consider the strength of your Special Operations Team before taking it on." After saying this, he instructed his subordinates to distribute the organized materials.
The team received a thick folder of documents, and Ma explained, "The third-level missions primarily involve clearing out peripheral monsters or gathering materials. They are relatively simple, but the rewards are also lower, typically ranging from ten thousand to a hundred thousand."
"The secondary missions carry a higher risk factor and require venturing farther from the base. The content is similar to the primary missions but involves more complex monsters or materials. This also comes with significant risks, but the rewards range from twenty thousand to fifty thousand."
"The primary missions are more challenging; they involve hunting, rescuing, or searching for rare materials. The rewards vary from fifty thousand to eighty thousand. As for the special missions, they are particularly tricky and usually entail high-risk tasks. If things go wrong, an entire Special Operations Team could be lost. There have been instances where teams overestimated their capabilities and applied for special missions, only to end up missing." Ma explained further. "However, these tasks offer much higher rewards, often exceeding one million. Additionally, any materials or monsters you acquire during the mission belong to your Special Operations Team; you only need to pay a portion of taxes to the base and the Free Federation."
"Hmph, our Blood Wolf team has already claimed the first special mission!" Sun Xing was the first to raise his hand after closing the documents.
Ma flipped to the last page; the first mission was "Locate the Thunderfang Wolf in the designated area!"
"The Thunderfang Wolf?" Ma couldn't help but feel intrigued upon seeing this name.
"What's wrong, Captain?" Lu Fei Fan asked.
"Nothing much. The cubs of the Thunderfang Wolf are worth five million on the market. Their fur and electric fangs can fetch around a hundred thousand," Ma briefly explained.
No wonder Sun Xing was the first to take this mission; he clearly saw its potential value.
"However, this mission is not easy. The Thunderfang Wolves are extremely difficult to deal with; each one possesses first-level strength. If you encounter a large pack, every single one will be at that level. If there are hundreds in a group... sending just a few members of your Special Operations Team to complete this mission would be tantamount to seeking death," Ma elaborated.
"I can't let this mission go; I want to take it too," Suma immediately stood up to declare.
"You... Suma, are you doing this on purpose to oppose me?" Sun Xingcai glared at the ungrateful woman with evident displeasure.
Suma seemed oblivious to the hostility directed at her and continued to address Ren Dongchuan.
"Ren Colonel, I hope you will assign the mission to us, Bauhinia Squad. We won't let you down."
"You're talking nonsense; we, Blood Wolf, were the first to express interest," Sun Xingcai retorted angrily, standing up.
As the two argued, other members of the Special Operations Team began to bicker over various missions as well.
"Alright everyone, quiet down," Ren Dongchuan said, gesturing with both hands to calm the room. The noise gradually subsided; it was clear that he was no stranger to such scenes.
"I want to explain something to you all. This Special Mission is not as simple as it seems. These tasks have been undertaken by Special Operations Teams before, and over the past two months, those who accepted these missions either didn't return or suffered heavy losses. I sent someone ahead to scout because these missions were previously classified as Level 1 tasks. However, after reconnaissance, it turns out that the current mission is more dangerous than anticipated. That's why I've decided to elevate all these Level 1 tasks to Special Class. Think carefully before you accept; if you can't come to an agreement, we'll have to resort to the old rules," Ren Dongchuan said nonchalantly.
The group exchanged glances and whispered among themselves before agreeing to use the old rules for deciding the mission assignments.
There were fifteen Special Operations Teams vying for the Special Mission, but only one could be chosen by drawing lots. The so-called old rules required each team to send a representative who would draw from a box. If they picked an empty slip, they would have to choose another mission; if they drew a mission code, that team would take on that task.
The team encouraged Lu Fei Fan to try his luck first. In front of him was Sun Xingcai, who drew a slip and handed it to Ren Dongchuan: Number 1, Special Mission, Azure Sand Lizard!
Sun Xingcai frowned deeply. Although it was a Special Mission, it was one he least wanted because dealing with lizards lurking in the desert's sandy regions offered no combat advantages whatsoever. This would likely be a very challenging task.
"Oh dear, you look so troubled. If it's too much for you, you can always back out," Suma from Bauhinia mocked with her arms crossed.
"Nonsense! When have I ever backed down?" Sun Xingcai shot back defiantly, deciding he would take on this mission despite its difficulty; after all, the rewards were quite decent.
When it was Suma's turn to draw lots, she also picked a Special Mission.
It seemed to involve going to the D Zone Cave to deal with the Ironclad Violent Bear. This mission was slightly better than Sun Xingcai's, but it was still challenging. The Ironclad Violent Bear was notoriously tough and ferocious, known for its thick skin and brutal nature, yet all its materials were quite valuable.
When it was Lu Fei Fan's turn, he reached into the box and felt something. Ren Dongchuan glanced at Lu Fei Fan, then took the crumpled paper from him. "Number 4, Special Mission—Thunderfang Wolf!"
Both Sun Xingcai and Suma looked at Lu Fei Fan, who was momentarily stunned. He had randomly drawn a mission that these two had been desperately wanting. Lu Fei Fan was incredibly lucky.
The team leader smiled and subtly nodded at Lu Fei Fan, indicating that his luck was quite good.
After the lots were drawn, each team received their desired missions and left the venue to prepare. However, some of the Special Operations Team members were so eager that they quickly geared up and set out.
But the team leader wasn't in a hurry; instead, he took Lu Fei Fan back to the camp first, planning to rest and regroup before heading out as originally scheduled.
