At this moment, Lao Liu was busy counting the goods for the week. With the shopping season approaching, there were many items that needed to be delivered.
Lao Liu calculated and felt a bit worried, as the workload was double that of usual. It would be quite exhausting for his few fellows, and he estimated that their working hours would definitely exceed the normal time.
Of course, if the goods were not delivered on time, a lot of negative reviews would affect their performance. Naturally, their performance bonuses would also decrease significantly. Although there were many goods to deliver, timely delivery could still earn them bonuses from the company.
It’s important to note that competition in this industry was quite fierce. Their manpower delivery service could not compete with larger companies that relied on drones or air transport.
Some companies even employed powered engines for deliveries, which vastly improved efficiency and prestige. However, the high costs posed a significant barrier, which was an advantage for Lao Liu's manpower courier service.
After finishing the inventory, Lao Liu felt a sense of unease. He put down the delivery orders and stepped outside to have a smoke, hoping to ponder whether he had overlooked anything.
Just as he was about to leave, the manager burst out of the office in a frenzy.
“Lao Liu! Lao Liu!” he shouted urgently. “Quickly, come here!”
Lao Liu had just taken out his cigarette but hurriedly put it back, sensing that something bad was about to happen. Gritting his teeth, he walked inside while mentally calculating whether something had gone wrong with the delivery team.
Sure enough, as soon as he entered the office, the manager pulled him in.
“Not good, Lao Liu,” the manager said, his tone frantic.
“What happened, Li Manager?” Lao Liu had never seen the manager so flustered before. “Hurry up.”
“The orders you dispatched today have encountered a problem!” The manager slapped his thigh in frustration.
“Which order?” Lao Liu still hadn’t fully grasped what was going on.
“The big one from the Emerald District!” The manager handed him a delivery slip.
Lao Liu took the slip and glanced at it; there didn’t seem to be any mistakes. He muttered, “There’s nothing wrong with this.”
“Hey, it’s not about the address being wrong; it’s about the delivery. Those two messed up and damaged the goods,” the manager said, clearly frustrated.
“Ah!” Lao Liu was taken aback. “So… is it expensive? Isn’t there insurance for this?”
“Yes, it’s fully insured for three million!” The manager replied with a hint of despair. His main concern was his performance and year-end bonus; incidents like this could wipe out his bonus in an instant, and being in a high position made him more anxious about losing that money.
In contrast, Lao Liu was more worried about his two subordinates.
“This can’t wait; we need to handle this immediately.” The manager said, rising from his seat. He called for Lao Liu, and they drove to the Emerald District.
When they arrived at the Emerald District, several employees from their courier station were already anxiously waiting at the entrance. Upon seeing their manager and Lao Liu arrive, they hurriedly gathered around.
“Manager, you finally made it.”
“Yeah, if you hadn’t come soon, someone might have gotten hurt.”
“That person is just too outrageous.”
The group spoke over each other, creating a chaotic scene as they tried to explain the situation.
“Let’s take it one at a time. What’s going on? Didn’t I send the person in charge of this area to handle the compensation? Shouldn’t we just follow the standard procedures without needing to be called out here?” Manager Li said, somewhat displeased. Normally, in such situations, he wouldn’t need to step in; the company’s compensation process would typically resolve things. However, the current situation was beyond his control because the other party simply wouldn’t accept their approach.
“We thought so too, but as soon as Supervisor Wang went in, they tied him up,” said an employee with a face full of acne.
“What?!” Manager Li was taken aback. “Tied up? Really?”
“Yes, we just called the police,” chimed in a shorter employee nearby.
At that moment, two police cars arrived. Many people at the district entrance gathered around, eager to see what was happening now that the police had shown up.
The police consisted of a middle-aged officer with a kind face and two young auxiliary officers who seemed full of energy.
Lao Liu followed the manager and the police into the area. Inside, it was already bustling with activity. A crowd had gathered around the square, where three people were tied to flagpoles. Nearby, a young man in a white suit lounged casually with his legs crossed, nonchalantly chewing on a duck foot.
Lao Liu recognized the three individuals tied to the flagpoles: Da Wen, Hua Jun Tang, and Supervisor Wang, who had been in charge at that moment.
Lao Liu wanted to rush over but was stopped by several burly men. It was then he noticed there were more than a dozen bodyguards surrounding the square.
Manager Li remained somewhat composed and grabbed Lao Liu, urgently shaking his head to signal him not to act impulsively.
The police officer shot Lao Liu a glare but didn’t say much as he led his two auxiliary officers into the crowd.
“Excuse me, Young Master,” the older police officer asked calmly. “May I inquire what these three did to commit any crimes?”
“Commit crimes? If it were that simple, I wouldn’t have bothered to catch them. They smashed my precious belongings and tried to escape, so I had no choice but to tie them up here,” replied the young man leisurely.
The young master, lounging with his legs crossed, immediately tossed aside the gnawed duck bone and picked up a white handkerchief handed to him by a nearby security guard to wipe his hands and mouth.
"Any large packages with full insurance paid will be compensated according to our regulations..." The bound Wang Supervisor continued to repeat this phrase, but before he could finish, the Young Man in White Suit gestured to one of his subordinates. Without hesitation, the subordinate swung his fist and landed a heavy blow to Wang Supervisor's face.
Wang Supervisor let out a muffled groan and spat out a mouthful of blood.
The Police Officer furrowed his brow and took two steps forward, but the bodyguards showed no mercy in blocking his path.
"What? Are you planning to arrest even the police?" the old Police Officer questioned them sternly.
The young man in the white suit waved his hand and approached the Police Officer, saying, "Uncle Lei, I mean no disrespect. It's not that I don't want to give you face; it's just that what they did was underhanded. I was willing to let it go if they agreed to compensate, but since they ran away first, I can't be blamed for that."
Bound to the flagpole, Da Wen had a bruised face. He sniffled a few times and quietly apologized to his equally battered colleague, Hua Jun Tang, beside him.
"Hua Jun Tang, it's my fault. I shouldn't have run away when I saw that box was damaged."
Hua Jun Tang loosened his hands that were tied behind the flagpole and licked his lips, tasting the sweet metallic tang of blood. He recalled how long he and Da Wen had been beaten by those bodyguards. Fortunately, they didn't seem intent on taking their lives; they just wanted to teach them a lesson while waiting for someone from the company to resolve the situation.
"What nonsense are you talking? If I hadn't slipped on the stairs, this wouldn't have happened. It's my fault for dragging you into this," Hua Jun Tang said with some guilt.
"Hey, that was a head-mounted device worth hundreds of thousands! Who knew they'd use such a cheap courier service?" Da Wen lamented. "If I'd known, I wouldn't have taken this order. Even if this blows over today, I bet the company will fire us both."
Hua Jun Tang remained silent; he felt a heavy weight in his heart. The company might not cover their mistakes, and even if they did compensate, he would still face the risk of unemployment. Moreover, judging by that young man's demeanor, it seemed like he was making a big deal out of this incident. To mitigate any negative impact on their reputation, the company would surely fire them both.
"Ah, this is disastrous. I had already found a house. Qi said she would marry me once we bought it; now it seems all of that is going down the drain..." Da Wen shook his head in self-deprecation.
At that moment, the usually silent Supervisor Wang spat out a mouthful of blood, then looked around at the bullying bodyguards with great frustration.
“These people are nothing but bullies, relying on their wealth or connections. Hmph! If I had a relative or friend with some influence, just wait and see how I would deal with them,” Supervisor Wang said, clearly aggrieved. “You two shouldn’t worry too much; the company won’t just abandon us here.”
“By the way, Hua Jun Tang, isn’t your brother taking the Unified Awakeners Examination?” Da Wen suddenly remembered.
Supervisor Wang’s eyes darted around, and he chuckled, seeming quite optimistic. “Well, if your brother passes the Unified Awakeners Examination, he’ll be part of the privileged class in the country. I bet these fellows wouldn’t dare to offend him.”
The police officer had been negotiating with the young man for a while and decided to let Lao Liu and Manager Li return to consult with the company regarding compensation. However, the young man named Li Qing refused to release anyone unless they paid immediately, insisting on a cash-for-release deal, and the price was no longer the original fifty thousand but one hundred thousand.
The old police officer didn’t want to negotiate on price; he left it for both parties to discuss. However, as time dragged on, Lao Liu and Manager Li had no authority to make decisions. Eventually, Manager Li went back to consult with company leadership while Lao Liu paced back and forth. Finally, he decided to call the families of the three subordinates tied to the flagpole to inform them of the situation.
...
The hustle and bustle in the hospital continued. Hua Feifan's mother was massaging her husband’s fingers and legs, hoping to prevent his muscles from atrophying.
After a while, a nurse from the Nurse Station called.
“Who is a family member of Hua Jun Tang?”
“That’s me…” Lu Fei Fan’s mother paused for a moment, glancing at her husband lying in bed before walking over to the Nurse Station to take the call.
As soon as she finished the call, she nearly collapsed. Fortunately, several nurses and family members nearby caught her just in time.
Her heart raced with anxiety as she walked back into the ward, pacing restlessly and muttering to herself in a daze, “What are we going to do?”
Aunt Wang from the next room couldn't help but ask curiously when she saw Hua Feifan's Mother pacing anxiously.
"What's wrong, Hua Jun Tang's mom?"
Hua Feifan's Mother immediately broke down.
"Something happened, something big!"
Aunt Wang hurriedly comforted her, "Don't panic, take your time and tell me what happened."
Hua Feifan's Mother started to cry loudly, and soon the other patients in the surrounding rooms came over to offer their support. Just then, a familiar voice rang out from outside.
"Mom, I'm back!"
The crowd parted as Lu Fei Fan entered, carrying a large bag of newly bought items. Behind him, A Teng followed closely, also holding a big pile of nutritional supplements at the door.
