As the sudden surge of energy swept through the air, a tremor resonated from the depths of the forest.
In an instant, the previously tense and perilous woods erupted with the sounds of gunfire and explosions, accompanied by the anguished cries of those caught in the chaos. The desperate wails mingled with the roaring flames that ignited among the trees, illuminating the dark sky above.
Lu Fei Fan understood that many had laid in ambush within the forest ahead. Whether they fought as lone wolves or in groups, they all shared a singular objective: to target the Poison Nest Spider King.
After a series of intense exchanges, some began to retreat from the forest.
Those fleeing stumbled out in disarray, their original purpose forgotten. In their haste, some inadvertently triggered hidden explosives laid by an unknown hand.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The sound of successive explosions was followed by more cries of despair. Others abandoned their severely injured comrades and fled for safety.
This group was unable to contain their panic; after the initial wave fell apart, those remaining continued to hide throughout the woods.
The trees cracked and splintered as if they were fragile twigs, easily broken upon impact. A powerful force drew closer from within the forest, and soon, the last wave of people emerged in a frantic escape.
They scattered as they retreated, but a few lagged behind and were suddenly ensnared by two white strands of webbing that shot out from the shadows, yanking them back into the depths of the woods despite having already run several meters away.
“Ah—”
“Help… help… ah…”
“Please don’t… don’t eat me…”
Those who were pulled back like marionettes displayed sheer terror as they were dragged back into the forest, their screams echoing hauntingly until they faded away.
This scene unfolded vividly on the virtual light screen projected before the Command Hall.
Several candidates were dragged away by the strands of viscous liquid shot out from the forest. The Colonel beside them couldn't help but feel a twinge of sympathy, while the Major General, Shangguan Biluo, standing in front of him remained indifferent, occasionally issuing commands to her aides.
"General... isn't it a bit much to use a Tier Three monster to deal with a bunch of candidates who aren't even at rookie level?" He hesitated to continue.
"Those who dare to participate in the Practical Assessment should be prepared for sacrifice," Shangguan Biluo replied expressionlessly.
"Look, such battles are happening in every region." With that, she waved her hand, and the tall virtual Light Screen immediately split into rows of windows. Each window displayed dynamic real-time footage from the examination grounds.
Some people were fighting, others were running through flames, some were rescuing their companions, while others were being brought back by rescue teams, and so on.
Each video showed different trajectories of events; they were uncontrollable but were more or less anticipated by Shangguan Biluo and her staff.
The Colonel wisely kept his mouth shut. The Free Federation's current environment for human survival was earned through the sacrifices of countless heroes and strong individuals who fought against formidable beasts with their flesh and blood. Back then, they faced even greater unfairness, yet they never voiced any complaints. They led humanity out of adversity in this apocalyptic-like predicament and grew into what it is today.
It was not merely luck that brought them here; it was also their courage and the strength forged in the fires of battle!
"Do you understand?" Shangguan Biluo suddenly paused her work and said, "This world is not lacking in talent. However, no talent reaches success solely through luck. Of course, luck is part of it, but what they lack is precisely what they must experience now. If they are not prepared to be baptized by fire and blood, what can they achieve?"
The Colonel was at a loss for words after hearing this. He was just a simple man who had not read many books, but if there was ever a need for him to defend his country, he would do so without hesitation.
"We need those who can shine brightly in this dark age," Shangguan Biluo said softly, her gaze distant and lofty. "Even if it's just a little bit, we can weave it into a spark that ignites the ocean..."
After hearing her words, the Colonel was momentarily stunned. He suddenly felt that this striking female Major General before him resembled a brilliant star among many faint lights in the darkness.
He felt fortunate that even in dark times, there were always individuals like her who stood up in moments of crisis, forging ahead from one generation to the next.
Not just now, but also in the future.
The trees in the forest were crushed and toppled, and the raging wildfire had illuminated the once dark woods.
Amidst the roaring flames, a colossal creature slowly emerged from the blaze.
In the flickering light, people finally caught sight of its terrifying true form: a gigantic spider. Lu Fei Fan had never seen a spider that resembled a mountain before. It was supported by thick, powerful limbs, and its massive back was engulfed in flames. The sight was awe-inspiring, leaving one to wonder whether the fire was a result of its own energy or if it was merely the forest fire clinging to its body.
However, this seemed to have no effect on it, as its two eyes burned with fiery pupils, scanning the forest back and forth as if searching for targets and prey.
Humans, who typically played the role of hunters, had now become delicious prey in front of this Poison Nest Spider King. It was almost laughable.
As it exhaled waves of scorching heat, several hand grenades and dozens of bullets came rushing at it from all directions.
It lifted its massive body and leaped with a tremor, releasing a spray.
A web shot out from its mouth, enveloping the grenades as they fell. Boom! Boom! Boom!
The force of the explosion shook the ground, sending nearby vegetation flying. The blinding light forced many to shut their eyes in fear of looking directly at it.
The energy bullets they had fired were similarly engulfed in the explosion. Once the flames subsided, the enormous spider revealed itself unharmed, clearly aware that the energy bullets posed no real threat.
Yet many refused to believe this; simple shooting could not cause any substantial harm. Suddenly, various types of energy guns hidden in ambush unleashed a torrent of firepower like a dam breaking, weaving together a terrifying net of energy that crashed down upon the Poison Nest Spider King.
But the Poison Nest Spider King was no ordinary foe. It was shrouded in an energy shield wrapped in burning flames. Countless energy bullets collided with the faintly glowing energy barrier, erupting into dazzling sparks. Many bullets were deflected and sent flying, crashing into the ground and kicking up clouds of dust or embedding themselves into trees, exploding into wood chips!
After the barrage, another dozen hand grenades were thrown at it, but the Poison Nest Spider King suddenly unleashed an astonishing wave of force that sent those grenades tumbling away in all directions. Boom! Boom!
Then came the whistling sound as three or four different types of surface-to-air missiles shot out from the forest, trailing smoke and charging forward with fierce momentum.
The Poison Nest Spider King swiftly sprayed white viscous webs around its body, covering the surrounding trees with Spider Webs. The Ballistic Missiles whizzed through the air, colliding with the Spider Webs and causing astonishing explosions.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The sound of Sniper Rifles echoed, but most of them were standard Energy Sniper Rifles. How could such weapons, effective only at eight hundred meters, easily penetrate the energy shield of the Poison Nest Spider King?
Aside from the dazzling sparks that erupted upon impact, there was little in terms of actual lethality. When the bullets finally ran out,
"Hiss!" The Poison Nest Spider King roared defiantly at the lurking humans, as if challenging them to unleash their full power.
Seeing that long-range attacks were proving ineffective, the Hot Weapons began to reduce their fire. After all, ammunition was limited, and after pouring out rounds for over ten minutes, they had finally exhausted their supply.
Now came the moment of life-and-death struggle. Many prepared to put their all into stepping firmly into the Special Training Camp. They drew their close-combat weapons and howled as they leaped, charged, and sprang from various corners of the forest.
Each one swung their weapons fiercely at the Colossal Creature. A dozen people attacked its massive body from different angles, but the Venomous Nest Spider shook its form violently. Its limbs swept through the air, sending four or five attackers flying as if they were mere stones, crashing into the forest with uncertain fates.
Others thought they might be lucky enough to inflict a wound, but no one expected that the flames burning on the Poison Nest Spider King's body would suddenly erupt like a raging inferno. It exploded outward, and everyone screamed in agony as they were burned or found their clothes igniting like they had been doused in oil.
The horrific scene resembled seven or eight people writhing in pain on the ground like torches.
However, this did not deter the swarm of Evaluators; they came in waves.
Eventually, Lu Fei Fan noticed that those who had been lying in wait to attack the Poison Nest Spider King were mostly hesitant or fearful. Of course, there were also those like Lu Fei Fan who were waiting for an opportunity.
Many began to choose retreat. They realized that before facing the Special Training Camp, they had to first overcome the challenge posed by the Poison Nest Spider King—a barrier that seemed insurmountable.
When it came to life versus future prospects, survival took precedence; one needed to stay alive to have any chance at all. Yet they did not know how long it would be before another opportunity arose; often, chances had to be fought for.
At least that was how Lu Fei Fan viewed it. Thus, he chose to stay and observe the unfolding situation; now was not a good time for him to strike alone against this Colossal Creature.
Unlike him, three teams emerged from the forest, and it was these teams that had the strength to take down the Poison Nest Spider King.
One of the teams was naturally led by Xie Yuanbai, consisting of three men and one woman. The other two teams were positioned in different directions, forming a triangle around the Poison Nest Spider King in the center, each team keeping a watchful eye on the others, none daring to make the first move.
"Shall we cooperate?" asked a rugged man on one side, wielding a war hammer and a large shield, with three companions armed with long knives waiting behind him.
"How do we split the spoils if we win?" replied a beautiful woman leading an all-female team on the other side. She stood at the front with swords in both hands, while several members of her team silently drew their weapons, ready for battle.
"Hmph, according to the rules, the reward for defeating the Poison Nest Spider King belongs to one person," the burly man with the hammer and shield pointed out, clearly aware of a loophole in the rules.
"Hey, what about you guys?" the female leader asked Xie Yuanbai's team.
Heikou, Da Shuo, and Hong Xin also looked at Xie Yuanbai.
Xie Yuanbai gazed thoughtfully at the Poison Nest Spider King, lost in his thoughts. Then he smiled slyly and drew two uniquely shaped silver crescent blades from his waist.
"Then let’s get started."
