The moonlight enveloped the hunting ground at midnight, and an intangible mist began to rise in the forest, completely submerging the dense jungle in a blanket of white, adding an air of mystery and unpredictable danger.
For those who were alert and self-aware, the jungle was their greatest trap, as well as the best place for hunters to set their Rope Traps to harvest prey. The fog and deep night created the most advantageous conditions for them.
Occasionally, gunfire erupted in the woods; the deadly hunt had already surpassed the initial Practical Assessment's regulations. However, the assessment had not been called off; instead, it had evolved into a test within a test, leading many to speculate about the underlying reasons.
To gain the opportunity to enter the Special Training Camp, no one would obediently follow the rules of hunting. Even if you were willing, others would not spare you, for this was inherently a jungle game of survival of the fittest.
In a corner of the jungle filled with the scent of gunpowder and smoke, a bloody battle had just concluded.
Xie Yuanbai stood indifferently among the trees, holding a standard Energy Sniper Rifle aimed at a man lying in a pool of blood in the grass.
“Please... don’t kill me... you can’t violate the hunting rules...”
Upon hearing the latter part of his plea, Xie Yuanbai’s face revealed a hint of disdain as he forcefully ground his Military Boots down on the man’s hand. The man in the blood-soaked grass cried out in pain; compared to his gunshot wounds, this new agony was merely trivial.
“I... you...” The man lying there muttered something in a voice barely above a whisper.
“Hmm? What did you say?” Xie Yuanbai leaned closer to hear better, only to realize he was being cursed with words that insulted his ancestors.
This provoked Xie Yuanbai's already furious mood beyond control. With a loud bang from his Energy Sniper Rifle, he silenced the man beneath his feet forever.
Xie Yuanbai looked down at him and then turned to see several companions cleaning up the battlefield. A black dog rummaged through a corpse for usable supplies and equipment while Da Shuo was organizing their gear. Upon seeing Xie Yuanbai eliminate the dying man, he merely shrugged as if it were none of his business.
Meanwhile, Hong Xin squatted nearby with a dagger, searching for something among the dirt mixed with blood.
Xie Yuanbai approached and noticed that Hong Xin was examining a patch of soil stained with blood.
Xie Yuanbai, driven by curiosity, crouched down and planted the gun he was holding into the ground. With one hand, he scooped up some of the blood-stained soil, bringing it to his nose for a sniff before discarding it.
He couldn't detect any difference between this blood and that of the person he had just killed.
Hong Xin seemed to sense that Xie Yuanbai couldn't discern anything special about it. She smirked slightly but refrained from making any mocking remarks.
"What’s so special about bloodied soil?" Xie Yuanbai couldn't help but ask her.
"It doesn't look good, but this blood has a unique scent..." Hong Xin continued to admire the patch of soil in front of her.
"Hmph." Xie Yuanbai scoffed, standing up with his gun in hand. "I should have shot him again while I had the chance!"
Hearing this, Hong Xin chuckled. "Too bad your gun isn't as fast as his movements!"
"You..." Xie Yuanbai was momentarily at a loss for words. Reflecting on it, if he hadn't taken advantage of the moment to shoot when the three brothers were confronting that man, he might have missed his chance entirely during a normal exchange.
Despite being hit by a bullet, the man had still managed to throw a hand grenade and dart into the woods with lightning speed. Before Xie Yuanbai could correct his aim for a second shot, the man's elusive movements resembled those of a ghostly beast, skillfully using the trees for cover.
"This guy is no ordinary opponent," Da Shuo remarked as he approached. "However, he must be injured and won't be able to escape far. If we can pursue him, we might have a good chance of taking him down."
"Alright." Xie Yuanbai nodded and raised his Energy Sniper Rifle. He was clearly troubled by his failure to kill the man with one shot and felt compelled to eliminate him to prevent future troubles.
"I think our hunting mission is more important right now," Black Dog interjected after finishing his tasks. "Wasting our precious time on an unrelated outsider isn't worth it."
Xie Yuanbai looked at Black Dog, wrestling with his thoughts for a moment. If he couldn't enter the Special Training Camp this time, his sister would definitely not let it slide easily. In fact, she had used her connections and bribed military officials to get inside information so that he could organize a team for an early hunt. Who would have thought that the military's Stunt Training Camp admission assessment would start early? It felt unfair to be disrupted by an outsider...
"Fine, I’ll trust you," Xie Yuanbai finally decided to go along with Black Dog's suggestion.
“Let’s go. Someone will be here soon. We need to leave quickly.”
The black dog fired a signal flare onto one of the corpses, and then the group swiftly departed from the scene. After a while, a rescue off-road vehicle equipped with a 1mm Energy Cannon rushed into the battlefield, but what awaited them were three cold, lifeless bodies.
At that moment, Lu Fei Fan was hiding in a dark thicket. After setting up pressure-sensitive landmines around him, he finally felt secure enough to sit down and check his wounds.
The sharp pain in his back had transformed into a numb, burning sensation. Gritting his teeth, he removed the Tactical Armor Vest beneath his camouflage uniform. The vest crumbled apart, likely due to his injuries, and it stuck to his back with blood and flesh. As he tore it off, he nearly lost consciousness from the pain, but he managed to pull it away, suppressing a scream as the intense pain and warm blood flowed down his spine, indicating he was bleeding again.
He gritted his teeth against the pain and tried to regulate his breathing; if he breathed too quickly, he would surely faint from blood loss. Sweat dripped from his forehead as he desperately calmed himself and pulled out the rescue kit from his backpack. Opening it, he found only a Battlefield First Aid Kit inside!
Without thinking much, he took a sip of the Rescue Serum and poured the rest over his bleeding back.
Instantly, a cool sensation spread across his burning back, alleviating some of the pain. He noticed that the warm feeling of blood flowing seemed to be slowing down—a good sign that the Military Field First Aid Medication was taking effect.
Lu Fei Fan examined the tattered Tactical Vest closely. The garment had sustained severe damage from a bullet impact in the center, completely shattering its structure in that area. Many parts of the material had even detached from its frame.
Fortunately, he had chosen this Tactical Vest before entering the exam area; had he opted for a weapon instead, the consequences would have been dire. That bullet would have surely cost him his life. The Tactical Vest absorbed most of the impact from the sniper round, preventing him from suffering serious injury or dying on the spot.
To trade a Military Type III Tactical Vest for his life was fortunate; it indicated that the sniper's rifle was merely standard military issue rather than something like the Fire Spider.
If it had been a charged sniper rifle like the Fire Spider, even wearing a Military Type III Tactical Vest would likely have resulted in a large hole through his body.
With energy-enhanced bullets, their lethality was naturally greater than standard energy bullets.
Since he had survived this ordeal, Lu Fei Fan was determined not to let this shot go unpunished. Although he hadn’t seen anyone directly, he noticed several individuals engaging in gunfire with the triplets as he fled. Judging by their firepower and gunshots, it seemed to be a team of four.
Finding them wouldn’t be difficult; after all, in this forest, their target was likely also hunting for the card-hunting target known as the Poison Nest Spider King. He intended to deliver them some “gifts,” as reciprocity was his style.
He smiled and then activated his Pulse Energy technique, allowing the cells within his body to flow through his limbs and veins. They surged into the desolate area of damaged cells, a battlefield scarred as if it had been bombed. The cells had withered, and Lu Fei Fan had to spend some time redirecting Pulse Energy from other parts of his body to wash over and repair this injured cellular field.
After several cycles of the Pulse Energy technique, the parched and wounded cellular field finally regained some vitality. Only then did he open his eyes. The Fumai Energy could not combat the fatigue and injuries of his body, but at least it allowed him to recover a bit faster. Thus, he rested for more than half an hour before departing.
Meanwhile, Xie Yuanbai and his group were advancing toward the center of the forest. As they drew closer to the heart of the woods, they noticed an increasing number of Venomous Nest Spiders. These spiders had spun sticky webs between the trees, waiting for their prey. Along the way, they even saw several cocoons ensnared in the webs. Once, out of curiosity, Hong Xin cut open one of the cocoons with her dagger, only to reveal a pale human face inside, startling her.
In the territory of the Venomous Nest Spiders, danger lurked everywhere. For instance, a Venomous Nest Spider might dangle from a tree branch, using its venom to paralyze you before spraying a thick, sticky substance that would completely ensnare you.
This viscous substance was incredibly tough; an ordinary person would find it nearly impossible to break free.
Just as the four were trying to determine their direction to continue searching for the Poison Nest Spider King, a series of chaotic gunshots rang out ahead.
“Damn it! Throw a Hand Grenade!” someone shouted in panic.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The deafening explosions of several Hand Grenades followed, their blinding light drawing nearby teams toward them, including many lone wolf hunters like Lu Fei Fan!
