Half an hour later, Lu Fei Fan's backpack was already filled with over a dozen Spider Sacs from Venomous Nest Spiders, marking the completion of his hunting mission. However, Lu Fei Fan was getting into the groove and had no intention of heading out to report his task just yet.
It was rare to find so many fierce beasts in one place, making it an excellent opportunity to hone his agility and Military Combat Technique. How could he let such a golden opportunity slip away? Of course, he would enjoy himself to the fullest before leaving.
After all, he had only just begun to grasp the nuances of the shop's entrance; there was no way he would interrupt this process now. He needed to practice until he reached a level of mastery—at least seventy or eighty percent—before considering going out. Besides, there was still time before the deadline for the actual hunting mission.
He could always turn in the task later.
Unbeknownst to him, time flew by quickly as Lu Fei Fan patiently searched for Venomous Nest Spiders, refining his stealthy movements as he observed them.
Meanwhile, the hunting grounds on the island were still embroiled in fierce battles. The blazing sun at noon gradually faded into the dusk as the sun dipped low on the horizon, casting its golden rays upon the undulating Sea Surface, making it shimmer brilliantly.
What caught the attention of the sentries on the island was a massive ship slowly approaching from beyond the horizon, directly in front of the fiery red sun that was about to sink into the sea. The fully powered vessel appeared stable and unstoppable as it glided over the churning waters.
The port sentries immediately alerted all security units to prevent any accidental harm. After all, this colossal ship, resembling a fortress on the Sea Surface, was none other than the Free Federation's flagship battlecruiser—the Pompeii Ancient Warship.
Equipped with various anti-air and anti-sea weapons such as Fei Lei and Tiger Ballistic Missiles—over thirty types in total—it housed some of the most advanced ballistic missile systems currently in service with the Free Federation. The ship boasted six powerful main Naval Guns at both its bow and stern, along with twelve auxiliary high-energy laser cannons.
Even a Sea Beast would think twice before approaching; a mere fly would likely be shot down. More astonishingly, Pompeii's power source was limitless, driven by energy generated from proton and antiproton fission within its three engines. It had immense power and speed—twice that of an ordinary cruiser—combined with a terrifying arsenal that made it a true Iron Tower beast roaming the oceans.
On the deck of this imposing Ancient Warship stood a striking Female Major General. Clad in Free Federation military attire, her spirit shone brightly as her military cloak billowed freely in the sea breeze, her short black hair tousled by the wind, exuding an aura of authority.
She was none other than Major General Shangguan Biluo, who was jointly responsible for this Practical Assessment alongside Thunder Jun.
Standing there against the wind, she gazed intently at Hunting Island, which was now within close reach. The distant sounds of gunfire echoed across the island while crimson signals occasionally shot up from various locations on the island before bursting in mid-air.
Upon receiving the signal flares, the busy rescue aircraft in the sky immediately deployed rescue personnel and even guided the ground rescue teams to assist the distressed candidates.
Each signal flare meant the elimination of a candidate, and during this time, Shangguan Biluo witnessed the sight of seven or eight flares rising simultaneously.
A call for help also signified being out of the competition.
Behind her stood several straight-backed subordinates, their expressions solemn as they stood on the deck like statues. She was known for her strict military discipline, so it was natural that no one spoke when it wasn't appropriate; they all quietly awaited the orders of this Female Major General.
"What is the current progress of the assessment?" Shangguan Biluo suddenly turned and asked.
A cold-faced Female Lieutenant Colonel saluted and reported in a firm voice, "Report: The progress has reached a point where most candidates have been deployed into the assessment area. Everything is proceeding as planned. Please advise."
"Good." Shangguan Biluo turned away, noticing that the Ancient Warship had begun to dock. The busy Monster Base was intermittently receiving transport ships carrying Ancient Warships. As the transport ship's deck lowered, vehicles loaded with Cages began to disembark. The Cages were covered with tarpaulins, but ominous growls occasionally emerged from within, indicating that they contained ferocious monsters.
After the Ship docked, Shangguan Biluo disembarked with her subordinates. A group of waiting officers immediately approached them at the port, all there for a colonel. This colonel had a face like rock, weathered by time and older than Shangguan Biluo by several years. However, upon seeing her, he respectfully saluted along with his subordinates and only proceeded to their designated location after she returned the gesture.
"How is the preparation coming along?" Shangguan Biluo asked as they walked. The busy dock was bustling with unloading and logistics, filled with soldiers, warships, and armored vehicles coming and going.
"Everything is prepared according to your previous arrangements; we are just waiting for your orders," the colonel replied respectfully yet confidently.
"Good." Without looking back, Shangguan Biluo headed straight for the Assessment Command Center.
There were actually seven or eight command posts for the assessment base, but Headquarters was located in a plain building not far from the port within a military restricted area. Other branch command posts were situated at key locations throughout the island.
Upon arriving at Headquarters, Shangguan Biluo led her group of officers into a Command Hall bustling with various command personnel. They approached a Three-Dimensional Projection Map in the center that detailed every branch command post's location, as well as safety perimeter boundaries. Each area was marked with symbols indicating specific types of monsters present or their habitats; some regions even had multiple types of monsters indicated.
“We have followed your instructions; the candidates are entering from various safe walls scattered around. Currently, the monsters deployed on the island have reached the expected target, but most candidates have yet to enter the core hunting area of the island…”
A Major briefly explained the current hunting situation on the island to Shangguan Biluo.
“In that case, let’s proceed with the plan,” Shangguan Biluo ordered without hesitation.
“Uh… Commander, are you sure you want to do this? Isn’t the higher-ups concerned about causing too many casualties…” The Major hesitated, cautiously inquiring.
“I will take responsibility for all consequences; you all proceed with the original plan!” Shangguan Biluo replied firmly, deliberately raising his voice to assure his concerned Major subordinates of his determination.
“Yes, sir!”
Immediately, all the officers present saluted. With this affirmative response, they began to carry out their deployment without hesitation, executing the previously drafted plan step by step. Asking further questions or raising objections would only provoke their superior’s anger, which was not a wise move and violated the military’s strict rule of obedience.
Shangguan Biluo gazed at the three-dimensional island model, pondering for a while before muttering to himself, “This is truly disappointing…”
Meanwhile, Lu Fei Fan was advancing through a barren forest. Strangely, this forest seemed lifeless compared to the vibrant greenery outside; it appeared utterly devoid of life. The ground was covered with withered leaves and branches, and occasionally concealed swampy areas could be found, with bubbles visibly rising from them. If one stepped in carelessly, they could easily become trapped. The entire dead forest was shrouded in a faint miasma.
Suddenly, a flock of Crow Vultures took flight from somewhere in the distance, startled by something. They cawed and screeched as they fled the trees. Just as Lu Fei Fan attempted to discern what had startled them, he heard a thunderous roar of a Fighter Jet engine echoing from afar.
He looked up just in time to see a massive Fighter Jet swoop low overhead like a giant bird, scattering papers that fluttered downwards. The wind caught these papers and dispersed them across every corner of this Assessment Hunting Ground Island.
“What are they dropping?” Lu Fei Fan approached the ground and picked up a piece of paper from the pile of leaves. Just as he was about to examine it closely, a red dot suddenly appeared on it!
“Not good!” He quickly flipped over and dropped to the ground!
Whoosh!
A bullet whizzed past his scalp, striking the tree behind him and creating a gaping hole the size of a bowl.
Bang—
Only then did the gunshot echo through the air.
As the lurking sniper adjusted his angle, preparing to fire a second shot, the figure of Lu Fei Fan had already vanished from sight.
Lu Fei Fan had taken cover behind a withered tree stump. Thankfully, he had reacted quickly; otherwise, he would have been shot in the head by the hidden sniper.
Although there were regulations against harming teammates, in such a vast examination area, anything could happen. Just from the bombs in Lu Fei Fan's backpack, it was clear he had already violated that rule.
So, who was this person that had ambushed him?
Regardless of who it was, anyone bold enough to take the first shot at Lu Fei Fan had made a grave mistake. That single shot had thoroughly angered him.
Lu Fei Fan pulled out a Magnetic Plasma Bomb wrapped in clothing from his backpack and threw it out. Boom.
The sniper rifle fired again, and the bullet struck the clothing-wrapped Magnetic Plasma Bomb, causing a massive explosion that sent smoke and swirling plasma into the air. It completely obscured the sniper's line of sight, giving Lu Fei Fan the opportunity to swiftly relocate amidst the chaos.
Meanwhile, hundreds of meters away in a concealed thicket, the sniper reluctantly lowered his sniper rifle before raising it again to continue searching for his lost target.
Lu Fei Fan remembered the source of the gunfire and could roughly discern its location. He carefully maneuvered to avoid the sniper's direct line of sight and stealthily approached the origin of the shots.
As he approached within a hundred meters of the sniper's range, he deliberately stepped on a branch, creating a sound. The sniper immediately turned and fired in the direction of Lu Fei Fan, a purely blind shot. After missing, it became clear that he had fallen into a trap, and his position was completely exposed. He quickly considered retreating, but it was already too late.
"Grandson, try this!"
Lu Fei Fan suddenly appeared about ten meters behind him, tossing something into the air. At the same time, the large-caliber revolver known as Lie Hound in his hand was already loaded and aimed at the object he had thrown.
Bang!
The thunderous sound echoed as the terrifying bullet from Lie Hound pierced through the High-Explosive Plasma Bomb that Lu Fei Fan had tossed.
Boom!
The Magnetic Plasma Bomb erupted in the air, and the sniper stared in shock at the explosion of light rushing toward him, engulfing him completely.
What followed was a chilling scream and wails echoing through the desolate forest.
