When Lu Fei Fan stepped out of the warehouse, A Teng and Niu Dali were already waiting outside.
Seeing the gear these two had chosen, Lu Fei Fan felt like a child playing with toys; the weapons he picked seemed utterly insignificant compared to theirs.
Niu Dali was holding a massive, heavy-duty Rocket Launcher, adorned with an array of energy grenades that hung from him like ripe fruit. He also had a bulging Military Backpack on his back, which undoubtedly contained Energy Cannon rounds for the Rocket Launcher. They wouldn't dare touch a charged Rocket Launcher; if it were to discharge, it could drain their Pulse Energy completely, leaving them as mere husks.
In addition to two handguns at his waist, he had a short-handled axe hanging from him—his chosen melee weapon, which seemed reasonable enough.
As for A Teng, he was the epitome of a war fanatic. He was draped in bullet belts and held a Huo Xiao Machine Gun in his hands. On his back was a crossbow with a quiver of arrows, and he too had two handguns at his waist. To make matters worse, every pocket he had was stuffed to the brim, the bulging outlines clearly indicating they were filled with Energy Grenades.
These two fellows were armed to the teeth—absolutely insane! Were they preparing for a siege or just looking to wreak havoc?
When Huahua Feifan emerged, Niu Dali scratched his head and proudly patted his gear, looking quite pleased with himself.
“How about this? This thing is called ‘Fist’! Pretty badass, right?” He hefted it up to test its weight, clearly satisfied with his choice.
“Who picked this for you?” Lu Fei Fan couldn't believe that Niu Dali's intellect could lead him to such a weapon.
“Hey, who else? Of course it was me, the clever one!” A Teng chimed in as he hoisted the Machine Gun onto his shoulder and tossed his hair back stylishly. He then couldn't resist showing off his own gear. “By the way, how do I look?”
Lu Fei Fan scrutinized him several times before replying, “Not flashy enough; you should have brought a tank along.”
“Pfft, superficial,” A Teng waved dismissively. “Do I really need Heavy Weapons to deal with those scoundrels? I'm more than enough.”
“Oh wow. Brother Teng is truly impressive! So then, when it comes to charging into battle, I’ll leave that heavy lifting to you,” Lu Fei Fan teased, setting him up for a boast.
“No problem! Just charging in? Leave it all to me.” A Teng cocked the gun and racked the slide as if preparing for battle. “When they come at me, I’ll take one down; if two come at me, I’ll take them both!”
“Hehe.” Niu Dali stood by scratching his head in confusion but gave a thumbs-up and grinned foolishly. “Awesome! Really awesome!”
The flamboyant conversation among the three was abruptly interrupted by a cold splash of reality.
"Hmph, superficial and childish."
The speaker was Chu Wei Lan, who coldly glanced at the three fools before turning to walk away.
"What did you say, you pretty boy? Say it again!" A Teng shouted, pointing at his retreating figure.
Chu Wei Lan seemed to comply, turning around with a sullen expression. "You all are just superficial and childish. What’s it to you?"
Seeing Chu Wei Lan not following the script, A Teng suddenly felt awkward. Many onlookers thought a fight might break out. After all, with guns in hand, people often felt emboldened. But A Teng...
"You... forget it. I'm in a good mood today. I'll let you off this time. Next time, I won't be so forgiving," A Teng stubbornly insisted.
Chu Wei Lan scoffed, muttering "idiot" under his breath before turning to leave.
"You, you, you..." A Teng pointed at him, unable to retaliate, which made Lu Fei Fan and Dali, along with others around them, burst into laughter.
With A Teng at a loss for words, he could only awkwardly retreat. Once others who were selecting weapons in the warehouse returned, the group reassembled at the sound of the Dog Tooth Club Captain's whistle.
The Dog Tooth Club Captain surveyed the weapons chosen by the group as he strolled through them, nodding in apparent satisfaction. He even kindly helped the Fellows tidy up their disheveled gear, leaving those who were usually trained by him feeling somewhat flattered. However, Lu Fei Fan couldn’t shake off the unsettling feeling brought on by that strange smile hanging at the corner of the Fellow's mouth.
"All set! Stand at attention!"
As expected, he walked to the front of the line.
"I regret to inform you of some bad news: the truck sent to pick you up broke down unexpectedly in Ban Lu. Therefore, you'll have to fully arm yourselves and run to the port to board the ship."
What!? The news immediately sent shockwaves through the crowd.
“Damn it, you tell us only after the selection? Are you trying to mess with us?”
“Hell, I nearly killed myself hauling a crate of Hand Grenades and ammunition out here.”
“Crap, I need to go back and swap out some gear. Ugh, if I had known, I wouldn’t have taken all this heavy Fellow gear…”
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The Dog Tooth Club Captain, holding an Energy Submachine Gun, opened fire at several people and said, “Weapons that have been selected cannot be returned. Whoever dares to return them, I’ll shoot you all right here.”
With that, the sentries around them aimed their weapons at the group, and even the guards surrounding the warehouse turned their Energy Cannons towards them.
The group in the middle felt like lambs to the slaughter, with no chance of resistance. They couldn’t help but grumble and wail in despair.
A Teng and Niu Dali were filled with regret; dragging this gear to the port had already cost them half their lives. Forget about any Practical Assessment.
Many people cursed the Dog Tooth Club and its ruthless leader under their breath. But cursing was futile; the situation was set in stone, and they could only set off fully armed. To ensure that this group of heavily armed Fellows reached the port obediently, the Dog Tooth Club Captain had made arrangements. Three or four jeeps filled with fully armed soldiers were designated as 'escorts,' but in reality, they were there for surveillance. Two of the vehicles were equipped with Machine Guns, ready to deal with any signs of trouble from these Fellows on the spot. Lu Fei Fan could tell that such ruthless actions were exactly what the Dog Tooth Club Captain was capable of—and he was acting on orders from above.
Thus, the group began their arduous journey. The port at Bayflow Island was about thirty to forty kilometers from this military base. Marching fully armed felt like it was costing them half their lives; if they slowed down even a bit, the Dog Tooth Club would fire their weapons to hurry them along.
Lu Fei Fan had originally chosen lightweight gear, but A Teng and Lu Fei Fan’s equipment was truly burdensome. Gritting his teeth, he had no choice but to help these two fools carry some of their load. During this time, the Dog Tooth Club allowed them a half-hour break before driving them forward again like cattle. Although Lu Fei Fan and his companions were also heavily armed, they were already running on empty.
When they finally reached the port, everyone collapsed onto the ground. The gear they thought they had scored a great deal on was now strewn about haphazardly as they tossed it aside. Lu Fei Fan was no exception; they all lay on the ground gasping for breath while waiting for those who had fallen behind to catch up. However, only half of them made it successfully; the other half lagged behind without knowing what fate awaited them.
At the port, someone was already waiting to receive this flock of sheep. Unlike the military uniforms of the Dog Tooth Club Captain, this person wore a white Navy uniform and appeared to be another Captain, looking somewhat friendly yet with a darker complexion.
"One hundred and seven candidates were supposed to arrive, and one hundred and seven were expected, but only fifty-three are present," the Dog Tooth Club Captain saluted the Naval Lieutenant and proceeded with the handover.
"Hmm? Where are the rest?" the Naval Lieutenant inquired.
At that moment, a rumbling truck drove in, and several soldiers jumped out, hauling down the 'bodies' that had long since passed out from the back of the vehicle.
Seeing this scene, the Naval Lieutenant couldn't help but chuckle. It was clear without guessing that these must be the fellows who had collapsed from exhaustion. They had really suffered a great deal; this experience would likely be etched in their memories for life.
The Dog Tooth Club abandoned these tortured, barely recognizable fellows and promptly hopped back onto the truck, leaving in a hurry.
"Alright, those who can move, get up," the Naval Lieutenant waved his hand. "Get these unconscious ones on board. You have twenty minutes. If even one person is left behind, their qualification for the Unified Examination will be revoked, and everyone will be eliminated."
A group of people exchanged glances, panting as they hesitated.
"Alright, start the timer."
The Naval Lieutenant casually shook his wrist, revealing an exquisite watch as he pressed the timer button. He then stood with his hands behind his back, waiting quietly with his female assistant.
After a while, the group of fellows who had been sprawled out finally reacted. Someone shouted, "Get on board!"
Immediately, everyone began to lift, carry, or directly embrace their unconscious companions to get them onto the ship. Perhaps it was because hope was within reach; those who were still conscious worked especially hard. In an incredibly short amount of time, they managed to haul all their comrades aboard the Transport Ship like cargo. The Naval Lieutenant even noticed one seemingly weak fellow carrying two at once without stopping.
It was evident how boundless human potential could be when it came to matters of future prospects.
The Naval Lieutenant glanced at his watch and was surprised to see that they had completed boarding in less than ten minutes. He couldn't help but acknowledge that these fellows had indeed been well-trained by that Army Captain; at least their current state was pushing them to their limits. They were all holding back a lot of pent-up energy, which would likely make for an interesting Practical Assessment.
He smiled brightly, filled with anticipation as he led his Young Officers aboard the ship.
The military vessel responsible for transporting this group of evaluators to the Practical Assessment battlefield began to sound its horn. Meanwhile, on a slope at the port, the Dog Tooth Club Captain sat in a truck smoking a cigarette, accompanied by two officers with the rank of Lieutenant, watching the ship slowly depart from the harbor.
"Finally, I don’t have to train these brats anymore," said the Dog Tooth Club Captain.
"Chao Ge, how many from your group do you think will pass the Practical Assessment?" one of the Lieutenants asked from the back.
The Dog Tooth Club Captain, known as Chao Ge, took a deep drag from his cigarette, then looked up thoughtfully before replying, "That depends on their luck. I heard this time the Practical Assessment was personally devised by the higher-ups from Military Headquarters and Fate Association. Anyway, the group we selected is no worse than those chosen from other military districts. Those named Chu Wei Lan and Lu Fei Fan might even make it into the Special Training Camp."
"Special Training Camp? With just these rookies?" The officer in the back chuckled. "Boss, you can’t be serious."
"Just wait and see; it’s quite possible."
With that, the Dog Tooth Club Captain tossed his cigarette butt aside and turned the key to start the truck. The other officers followed suit, discarding their cigarettes and taking their seats.
With a roar, the vehicle turned around and drove off into the distance, heading away from the departing military vessel, growing smaller as it moved further away.
