The thrilling escape from death finally allowed everyone to breathe a sigh of relief. The once turbulent waves began to weaken as the Ferry moved further away from the storm's center, though the gloomy atmosphere over the sea remained, accompanied by a light drizzle.
However, after Thunder Jun's fierce battle with the beast, the Sea Beasts that had been lurking on the periphery retreated like a receding tide.
It seemed that they were also under the control of that Ancient Behemoth; even if they weren't directly controlled, they likely had some connection.
Under Ma Wei's command, Tao Hua began to organize the remaining warriors to treat the injured efficiently. Most aboard the ship were Evaluators, along with the combatants, totaling around three hundred people. Now, after counting, it turned out that there were fewer than one hundred left, with many others officially listed as missing. The warriors were faring better, but whether those Evaluators who had fought and sacrificed themselves could be classified as Revolutionary Martyrs was still uncertain. After all, the Free Federation Army Headquarters required a cumbersome process and review to make such determinations.
This was beyond what an officer of Tao Hua's rank could influence. The loss of the captain and many comrades cast a heavy atmosphere over the Ferry. Aside from clearing away the monster corpses on board, they were also tasked with handling their fallen comrades.
The largest cabin where Lu Fei Fan and those Evaluators had been was now bustling with activity. The few medical personnel on the Ferry were overwhelmed, and even a dozen Evaluators had temporarily taken on nursing roles, yet it was still far from enough.
Fortunately, Ma Wei had called in several experienced Veterans and medics he had brought along to assist, which eased the burden somewhat. However, the medical conditions on the Ferry were rudimentary and limited; even Ma Wei and those supporting warriors contributed their personal supplies of military stimulants but still found themselves stretched thin.
Military stimulants were precious to soldiers; each person was allotted two doses for combat missions and typically reserved for critical moments. Regular troops would not be equipped with them otherwise.
Despite these efforts, many people and warriors succumbed due to excessive blood loss or failure to receive timely assistance, forever lost in this nightmarish encounter.
Meanwhile, Lu Fei Fan sat atop the Ferry's Watchtower with Niu Dali and A Teng. A Teng had somehow managed to scrounge up a pack of popular Military Knife Brand Cigarettes from the Free Federation Army. Although these cigarettes were cheap, their strong flavor made them a favorite among lower-ranking soldiers in the military.
Lu Fei Fan took a puff; while the spicy sensation didn't alleviate his fatigue, it did help relax some of his tense nerves. He had checked Niu Dali and A Teng's injuries; aside from A Teng having two broken ribs—sustained from falling down a ladder—there wasn't much else wrong. With some rest in a hospital for about ten days or so and diligent practice of the Pulse Breathing Technique, he would likely recover in three to five days.
Dali seemed fine; he wore a silly grin without any apparent reason for it.
"What are you grinning about all night?" A Teng kicked him lightly, looking somewhat like a soldier with a mischievous demeanor.
Niu Dali pulled out a yellow bottle and shook it, revealing the red liquid inside. "See this?"
"What is it?" A Teng asked, eyeing the bottle.
"‘Brilliant Soft Gold Liquid’!" Niu Dali exclaimed, treating the bottle like a treasure as he tucked it back into the innermost pocket of his clothing. "This stuff is valuable. I saw a few Veterans on the deck using Military Knives to cut up the corpses of those Octopuses to collect it, so I got myself a few bottles too."
"What do you collect this for?" A Teng looked at Niu Dali.
"I heard many alchemists are looking to buy this stuff; it can sell for quite a bit. Plus, I overheard that those Veterans mix it with stimulants to last longer," Niu Dali said with a mischievous grin, shaking his head at A Teng as if to say, you know what I mean.
"Damn it! How can a man of stature and appearance rely on such underhanded tricks to conquer women and the world? It's despicable and shameless! No way! For the sake of justice in this world and the dignity of men, I must stop them!" With that, A Teng dashed off. After a while, he returned and asked Niu Dali.
"Niu Dali, do you have any more bottles?"
Niu Dali shook his head, and A Teng turned to Lu Fei Fan.
"Brother, do you have any? Lend me two."
"Get lost!"
Lu Fei Fan watched in amusement as A Teng's antics unfolded. Did this guy really not know what he was getting himself into?
In the end, A Teng dragged Niu Dali off to scavenge for bottles for their shady dealings, leaving Lu Fei Fan alone on the Watchtower in a daze.
Suddenly, Lu Fei Fan remembered the black sphere that Thunder Jun had tossed to him before leaving. He reached into his Military Backpack and pulled it out, examining it under the faint glow of the night.
The black sphere was surprisingly the size of a palm, soft and slightly sticky to the touch. However, it did not exude any foul-smelling liquid; instead, it felt like a part of some biological tissue. The sphere was half white and half black, and its warmth made him want to hold it in his hand. What could this be?
Lu Fei Fan looked around carefully, his eyes widening in surprise as he realized that this sphere was actually… an eyeball!
Yes, the object in his hand was undoubtedly an eyeball, but it was not human; it resembled a part of some ancient creature. Could this be the eyeball of the Ancient Behemoth?
Strangely enough, why would Thunder Jun, a Major General, give this eyeball to him?
Hmm?
Suddenly, Lu Fei Fan felt an inexplicable thrill emanating from the Black Eye. He sensed a peculiar and unprecedented Special Energy being transmitted from this Black Eye into his hand, causing the dormant cells in his body to react!
Could it be…?
He hurriedly sat down, cradling the Black Eye in his hands. After the fierce battle, his Pulse Energy had been nearly depleted, and he needed to operate the Fu Mai Xi Shu technique to restore his previous Pulse Energy reserves. Now, he felt like a pauper with barely any energy left in his Pulse Energy cells.
As he began to recite the Pulse Energy incantation, he started to mobilize the flow of energy within his cells. Again and again, although the Energy Flow within his Pulse Energy cells was weak, Lu Fei Fan could clearly feel them rejoicing. It seemed that with each cycle through his body, the speed of energy recovery increased, and the previously withered cells gradually began to generate some Pulse Energy again.
Clearly, an external source of energy was continuously supporting him. Upon checking its origin, he found that it came from none other than the miraculous Black Eye in his hand!
After reciting the Pulse Energy incantation dozens of times and opening his eyes, he realized that most of his depleted Pulse Energy had already been restored. Holding the warm Black Eye in his hand felt as if it resonated with him, transmitting a comforting flow of energy into his body.
“This eyeball has such magical effects…” Lu Fei Fan exclaimed with delight. “It seems that this black eyeball from the giant beast is truly a treasure.”
However, why would Thunder Jun give him such a valuable item for no reason? This remained a perplexing question in Lu Fei Fan's mind.
Perhaps the only one who could answer this question is Thunder Jun himself.
At this moment, Thunder Jun was aboard a high-speed vessel, an exceptional craft cutting through the night mist at full speed. The air was thick with swirling black clouds, intermittently illuminated by flashes of lightning, creating an atmosphere fraught with danger.
However, on either side of this vessel were two sleek Fighter Jets acting as escorts, resembling sharp blades ready to strike. Should they encounter any prey that dared to intrude, they would unleash their most powerful attacks without hesitation.
Thunder Jun stood in the command center of the ship, a holographic electronic map displayed before him. Three Ancient Warships were rapidly traversing towards another sea area, their routes clearly marked. He was aboard one of these Ancient Warships.
He felt somewhat dissatisfied with their current position.
“How long until we reach the designated sea area?” Thunder Jun inquired.
The officer beside him stepped forward and replied firmly, “Ten more minutes.”
After a moment of contemplation, Thunder Jun issued an order: “Let the Phantom Demon Fighter Jet break away from the formation to provide support!”
“General, that’s not advisable,” one of the staff officers immediately interjected to stop him.
Another officer quickly concurred, “Yes, General. If we lose the Phantom Demon Fighter Jet escort and something happens…”
The first officer hesitated to continue as Thunder Jun shot him a cold glare. Recognizing the tension, he wisely swallowed his words.
“What if?” Thunder Jun scoffed. “Do you think the chance of our Ban Lu being ambushed by monsters is more significant than the lives of those soldiers on the other ships?”
“Sir… I did not mean it that way,” the staff officer explained awkwardly.
"What do you mean by that? Do you think my abilities are inferior to the 'Phantom Demon Fighter'? That I can't even handle a monster?" Thunder Jun reprimanded, then turned away, commanding firmly, "Execute my orders immediately!"
"Yes!" The officer quickly summoned a messenger to relay the orders.
Soon, the two 'Phantom Demon' Fighter Jets that had been guarding the left and right sides of the Command Ship broke away from their escort formation. The largest engine port in the center of their twin-engine setup suddenly erupted with astonishing energy, transforming into two streams of light that vanished ahead.
The supersonic cruising speed of the 'Phantom Demon' Fighter Jets was several times that of the Command Ship, so Thunder Jun naturally let them proceed for support first; this was undoubtedly the best choice.
After Thunder Jun's reprimand, the cabin fell silent for a moment. Aside from the officer wearing a half-black mask who returned to report on the 'Phantom Demon' Fighter Jets leaving the escort formation, no one dared to speak.
Thunder Jun focused on the panoramic simulation map before him. He zoomed in on the virtual underworld map, making it appear even more expansive. On this vast sea map, markers indicating the stationed troops of the Free Federation were scattered like stars.
On the outermost edge of that map, beyond a green defensive line, there were additional military formations. Unlike the purple markers representing stationed troops within the coastal defense line, these formations outside used orange special markers.
"With such a significant event occurring, how could the Expeditionary Force be completely unaware? What are they doing?" Thunder Jun stroked his chin as he analyzed the current situation on the map.
"The Expeditionary Force?" His officer sneered at this remark. "Those rotten insects! Aside from surviving in the Fallen Zone and engaging in shady dealings, what else can you expect from them? Don't dream. The Expeditionary Force of this era is nothing like that of a distant past."
Thunder Jun did not refute him but instead sighed helplessly, "After all, they are soldiers."
"As the ancients said, a general's orders are not to be given lightly when he is away," the officer replied.
"Shura, you realist! You seize every opportunity to criticize me," Thunder Jun said half-jokingly.
"Hmph! What's wrong with being a realist? Dreamers often perish due to their naivety," replied Shura, the officer. "However, I am curious."
“What are you curious about?” Thunder Jun glanced at him, feeling a bit curious himself about his aide's curiosity.
“I’m curious about how you gave the eye of the Ocean Giant Star Beast to an ordinary-looking young man,” said Shura.
Thunder Jun suddenly understood; that was what he was curious about. He chuckled and replied, “So that’s what you’re curious about.”
“Of course! No matter how worthless the eye of the Ocean Giant Star Beast is, it must be worth millions. You just handed it over to a plain-looking young man without a second thought. Doesn’t that pique your curiosity? If word gets out, how many people will be trying to figure out your relationship with that young man? And then I, as your aide, will have to clean up after you again,” Shura said, clearly displeased, as this kind of situation had happened more than once or twice.
“It was just a spur-of-the-moment decision,” Thunder Jun answered without much thought.
“Oh, I knew it,” Shura said with an expression that suggested he expected nothing less, accompanied by a deep disdain.
“Hey, what do you mean by that look in your eyes?”
“Nothing much. I was just considering whether I should report to Military Headquarters and request a new general as my aide.”
“Get out of here! I haven’t even regretted passing up on the beautiful Female Colonel for you, so why would I want to keep you around like a lingering ghost? If it weren’t for our school ties…”
“Well then, it looks like we’re about to have a fight,” Shura replied, but he didn’t actually make a move.
Thunder Jun stroked his chin, watching the sullen-faced Fellow with amusement, wondering what he was thinking.
At that moment, several staff members hurriedly intervened to dissuade them. Remarkably, both men tacitly avoided mentioning their earlier confrontation, leaving the staff feeling anxious yet amused. However, this kind of thing didn’t seem to be the first time it had happened. They naturally turned their attention back to discussing the situation on the holographic map.
A few minutes later, alarms began blaring in the cabin.
“General, we have arrived!” a staff officer reported.
Sure enough, as the Command Ship passed through a layer of mist, two Ancient Warships could be seen retreating side by side in the distance over the sea. Behind them surged monstrous waves of creatures, howling and ferocious, charging towards the two Ancient Warships.
The two Ancient Warships exchanged fire, unleashing a dense barrage that lashed out like sharp whips into the throng of monsters. Gaps would appear momentarily, only to be quickly filled again, yet the Ancient Warships maintained a moderate speed, keeping a distance comparable to that of the monsters.
However, both Ancient Warships seemed to have sustained damage, billowing thick black smoke and appearing quite battered and desperate.
Above them, two escorting Phantom Demon Fighter Jets provided support. The Phantom Demon Fighter Jets utilized their high-speed engines to circle around and launch powerful attacks against the monsters closing in from behind. Intense beams of light struck the Sea Surface, obliterating large swathes of the monstrous horde, but these creatures numbered in the tens of thousands and continued to surge forward as if they could never be fully eradicated.
Despite this, with the assistance of the Phantom Demon Fighter Jets, the Ancient Warships at least had a chance to catch their breath.
At that moment, a thunderous roar echoed as a high-speed Command Ship streaked across the dark clouds. A beam of light shot down with tremendous force, landing precisely between the two Ancient Warships and the Monster Tide.
Boom!
Like a massive stone plummeting into the sea, it stirred up towering waves.
The terrifying shockwave rippled outward, sending both the ocean waves and hordes of monsters crashing into the depths below, resulting in countless deaths.
Immediately, Armored Warriors aboard the Ancient Warships activated their engines to ascend into the air, bracing for battle.
However, as they looked closely at the forceful wave that separated them from the monsters, they realized it was none other than War God Thunder Jun!
He stood upon the Sea Surface, his fists striking out repeatedly at the approaching Monster Tide, unleashing astonishing waves of energy. These waves surged forth like an unstoppable tide of soldiers, crackling with thunderous power.
After being struck multiple times by Thunder Jun's overwhelming force, the Monster Tide began to falter, ultimately retreating.
The group of monsters that had pursued the two Ancient Warships gradually dissipated. Every soldier on the Ancient Warships was cheering.
Thunder Jun glanced back at the two Ancient Warships, which were billowing smoke. The surviving soldiers looked at him with admiration and respect. He couldn't help but nod, then leaped from the Sea Surface, disappearing into the clouds.
The soldiers on the Ancient Warships were astonished, filled with admiration and reverence, even moved. This was the immensely powerful Humanity's Arbiter, the last guardian of humankind—the God of War!
"God of War! God of War! God of War!"
It was unclear who started the chant, but soon all the soldiers were shouting those two words in unison.
"God of War! God of War! God of War—"
