Tao Hua remembered studying marine biology at the Free Federation military academy, particularly the section on the ‘Thousand-Faced Octopus’. Given her excellent memory, it was not difficult for her to recall the details.
The ‘Thousand-Faced Octopus’, also known as the ‘Enchanting Octopus’, possesses approximately thirty-three thousand sets of genes—over ten thousand more than humans. This genetic distinction sets them apart from other invertebrates.
As a result, the ‘Thousand-Faced Octopus’ is incredibly intelligent, cunning, and aggressive. When they reach a certain size, they can even use tools. Through genetic decoding, Federal Scientists discovered that octopuses have a genetic structure similar to that of humans, allowing them to develop a neural network.
Thus, the ‘Thousand-Faced Octopus’ is capable of learning! Like humans, they possess a complex brain, a closed-loop Data Analysis System, and eyes equipped with irises, retinas, and lenses.
In Tao Hua's previous encounters with the ‘Thousand-Faced Octopus’, she had seen only a fraction of what she was witnessing now—this time, the number was hundreds of times greater than in her first twenty years of life. Initially, the yellow ‘Thousand-Faced Octopus’ that leaped and attacked the Ferry were clearly of lower intelligence, serving as cannon fodder and being the most common type.
The red ones were older and possessed some intelligence and close-combat skills. They had even developed mimicry abilities. Only after the cannon fodder had been sufficiently depleted did they begin their assault on the Ferry. Their combat capabilities were impressive; an ordinary human soldier wielding a Zhan Dao could match one red ‘Thousand-Faced Octopus’ in combat prowess.
Tao Hua initially thought this was quite formidable since these red octopuses had already inflicted casualties on the warriors aboard the Ferry. However, what appeared next far exceeded her expectations!
The storm seemed to have calmed somewhat, yet the battle on the Ferry continued unabated. The turbulent waters still concealed deadly threats as two massive octopuses surged forth from the murky depths.
These creatures were twice the size of their red counterparts and exhibited vibrant colors, clearly indicating a higher level of sophistication. They emitted piercing shrieks as they unfurled their tentacles, instantly ensnaring several warriors who had just cleared away other octopuses on the decks. Their tentacles pierced through bodies like Steel Mustache, effortlessly killing those warriors.
The soldiers reacted quickly, raising their weapons to fire at these two distinct Banded Octopus. However, their speed was astonishing; they dodged like lightning. Their agile tentacles allowed them to dart across the deck with ease. When they lunged at the soldiers, their tentacles swept through like iron whips, sending several warriors plummeting into the sea where silence followed after a brief tumult.
“Heart!” Tao Hua swiftly picked up her Sniper Rifle, rushing to the front of the second-floor deck to load and aim. But it was clear that the two octopuses had sensed her presence as a sniper; they emitted strange, ear-piercing shrieks once more.
Tao Hua felt an ominous chill run down her spine. Sure enough, there came a series of loud thuds.
Several vividly colored octopuses surged toward the Ferry, attacking it rapidly. Many soldiers were suddenly ambushed and screamed in terror; some fell into the water with little hope of survival.
“Damn it!” Tao Hua raised her Sniper Rifle, aiming at one of the Banded Octopus that was sweeping its tentacles across the deck and pulled the trigger!
Bang!
The octopus exploded, leaving behind a shocking sight as its body splattered with a golden liquid!
‘Brilliant Soft Gold Liquid’!
Peach Blossom’s mind flashed with this term. If she remembered correctly, the golden liquid inside these Banded Octopuses was indeed the ‘Brilliant Soft Gold Liquid,’ an excellent material for pharmacists to concoct healing potions. Collecting it could fetch a good price. But now, she had no time to think about that. The attacks from over a dozen Banded Octopuses had thrown Ferry's defenses into chaos. She could no longer hold back and drew the slender sword from her waist.
Crash! A Banded Octopus smashed through the window of the deck and tumbled into the cabin. Spotting Peach Blossom, it let out a shrill scream and lunged at her…
Meanwhile, Lu Fei Fan wielded his Zhan Dao, having already dispatched countless octopuses. The blade felt dull in his hands, so he discarded it and picked up another one. No matter how dull it became, he kept switching weapons. A circle of octopus corpses surrounded him, and even more astonishingly, there was a pile of severed tentacles. Lu Fei Fan particularly enjoyed cutting off these tentacles because they were covered in suckers that could become quite troublesome if they latched onto him.
Thus, his Zhan Dao swung like a precise cutting machine; with each strike, an attacking octopus would lose a tentacle. Only when there were hardly any tentacles left would Lu Fei Fan deliver the final blow.
On the rear deck, Red-Backed Octopuses began to swarm Lu Fei Fan in a frenzy. At one point, as many as eight red-backed octopuses attacked him simultaneously, their tentacles overwhelming in number.
Many warriors on the deck had retreated into the cabin to fight. When they saw several Red-Backed Octopuses surrounding Lu Fei Fan, they wanted to help but fell one after another. As Lu Fei Fan wielded two Zhan Bing blades against the Zhan Dao with formidable strength and composure, they began to regard him with newfound respect. When the number of octopuses around Lu Fei Fan reached alarming levels, many warriors no longer dared to approach him.
He was undoubtedly a complete freak—a madman!
Yet Lu Fei Fan reveled in it. The ‘hero’ and his weapon had not spared him from pain; he had experienced enough discomfort from adjusting the virtual world's pain level to over ninety percent realism. The intensity was nearly indistinguishable from real damage.
The ‘hero’ taught that pain was the fastest way to grow. It would engrave every mistake made in combat firmly in Lu Fei Fan's memory. He understood that this was a lesson: while pain could be simulated in the virtual world, even a slight flaw or oversight in this brutal reality could determine life or death.
Facing these overwhelming numbers of octopuses was precisely the best way to hone his Military Combat Technique. After all, Lu Fei Fan had dedicated considerable effort to studying cold weapon combat techniques. Besides training with ‘heroes’ in realistic simulations, he felt there was still ample room for improvement.
In his knife techniques—sweep, chop, flick, slice, graze, block, slash, thrust—each one manifested in real combat. His Knife Technique was agile yet powerful, opening and closing with great force.
As Lu Fei Fan gradually realized that the Red-Backed Octopus could no longer withstand his Knife Technique, he felt a sense of dissatisfaction. Suddenly, he noticed that his opponent had changed; the three octopuses before him had transformed into vibrant colors and were now twice the size of the Red-Backed Octopus.
Lu Fei Fan launched an attack, and after a few exchanges, the three octopuses found themselves unable to gain any advantage over this human. In fact, one of the octopus's tentacles was severed, causing it to let out a painful and furious shriek.
Lu Fei Fan laughed heartily, sounding like a madman as he shouted, “What a thrill! Bring it on!”
With that, he swung his two Zhan Dao once more and charged into the encirclement of the three Banded Octopuses. The octopuses quickly formed a pincer formation to launch their assault. However, after just a few rounds, two of the Banded Octopuses fell to his blade, while another, terrified after losing three tentacles, shrieked in fear at this human before turning and leaping into the sea to escape.
“Hey, hey, hey! Don’t run away! I’m not done yet!” Lu Fei Fan was clearly in high spirits, but the fleeing Banded Octopus abandoned him. It was well aware that octopuses are incredibly fast when they decide to flee. Although he had severed several of its tentacles, it would likely regenerate in a few months.
Just as he felt frustrated by this turn of events, he suddenly sensed danger approaching from behind. He turned around just in time to clash his Zhan Dao against three other combat Zhan Dao!
Lu Fei Fan widened his eyes as he saw his ambusher—a Banded Octopus! This one appeared larger than those that had previously attacked him and looked to be the oldest among them. Lu Fei Fan noticed several scars on its head.
This Banded Octopus must be their leader!
It even wielded two or three Zhan Bing combat Zhan Dao with its tentacles, locking them against Lu Fei Fan's Zhan Dao!
What sent a chill down Lu Fei Fan’s spine was the crystal-like eyes of the Banded Octopus. The way it looked at him was filled with animosity, and Lu Fei Fan could clearly sense its murderous intent!
This Banded Octopus was undoubtedly an intelligent creature; it swiftly retracted its Zhan Dao and launched an impressive attack on Lu Fei Fan using its own knife techniques!
However, unlike human Knife Techniques, their Knife Technique seemed more spontaneous and instinctual. The agile tentacles allowed for greater flexibility in their movements, making their attacks erratic and unpredictable.
After both sides tested each other for a while, they entered into a fierce exchange of blows. The sound of clashing blades echoed around them, sparks flying as they collided.
In the distance, Taohua rolled down from the second-floor deck. She looked up at the battle unfolding before her with wide eyes filled with shock.
The Banded Octopus that was fighting against Lu Fei Fan was surprisingly using human weapons in battle!
This was definitely not an ordinary Banded Octopus. Its three tentacles executed the Knife Technique with remarkable sharpness, launching sneak attacks at Lu Fei Fan from various tricky angles with thrusts and cuts. Yet, Lu Fei Fan effortlessly countered each assault, his Knife Technique flowing like water, so precise and flawless that it forced the Banded Octopus to retreat step by step!
Tao Hua couldn't help but be astonished. This young man's fighting skills were completely above her own, and his fervent yet calm combat instincts were truly breathtaking.
Just as she wanted to observe a bit longer, a Banded Octopus spotted her, leaping down and shrieking, which immediately prompted two more to slowly approach from the sea.
Tao Hua glanced at her shoulder, where a wound was oozing blood. Having already sustained injuries from dealing with the previous Banded Octopus, she instinctively took a step back. Gritting her teeth, she picked up her dagger, preparing to fight for her life.
Suddenly, a figure blocked her path, leaving Tao Hua momentarily stunned.
The person before her had long black hair flowing wildly and wore a striking black outfit. The two specially crafted large pistols in his hands left a deep impression on her.
It was him!
The Black-Haired Young Man who had saved her earlier on the deck!
